G What RVW means to me Testimonials by sixteen The RVW Society celebrated its 10th anniversary this July – just as we signed up our 1000 th new members member to mark a decade of growth and achievement. When John Bishop (still much missed), Robin Barber and I (Stephen Connock) came together to form the Society our aim was to widen from page 4 appreciation of RVW’s music, particularly through recordings of neglected but high quality music. Looking back, we feel proud of what we have achieved. G 49th Parallel World premieres Through our involvement with Richard Hickox, and Chandos, we have stimulated many fine world by Richard Young premiere recordings, including The Poisoned Kiss, A Cotswold Romance, Norfolk Rhapsody No.2, page 14 The Death of Tintagiles and the original version of A London Symphony. Our work on The Poisoned Kiss represents a special contribution as we worked closely with Ursula Vaughan Williams on shaping the libretto for the recording. And what beautiful music there is! Doctoral Dissertations. 603. https://opencommons.uconn.edu/dissertations/603 i Nonatonic Harmonic Structures in Symphonies by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Arnold Bax Cameron Logan, Ph.D. University of Connecticut, 2014 This study explores the pitch structures of passages within certain works by Ralph Vaughan Williams and Arnold Bax. A methodology that employs the nonatonic collection (set class 9-12) facilitates new insights into the harmonic language of symphonies by these two composers. The nonatonic collection has received only limited attention in studies of neo-Riemannian operations and transformational theory. This study seeks to go further in exploring the nonatonic‟s potential in forming transformational networks, especially those involving familiar types of seventh chords. An analysis of the entirety of Vaughan Williams‟s Fourth Symphony serves as the exemplar for these theories, and reveals that the nonatonic collection acts as a connecting thread between seemingly disparate pitch elements throughout the work. Nonatonicism is also revealed to be a significant structuring element in passages from Vaughan Williams‟s Sixth Symphony and his Sinfonia Antartica. A review of the historical context of the symphony in Great Britain shows that the need to craft a work of intellectual depth, simultaneously original and traditional, weighed heavily on the minds of British symphonists in the early twentieth century. -

(The latter phrasing, as will be recognized, is that of the young British soldier-poet Wilfred Owen, aged 25, himself killed in Flanders a week before the German surrender) Such poetic expressions of generational protest, written by contemporaries or by slightly older figures like Pound, comprise one of the great genres of the war, and are reflected as well in a larger history of survivorship writing, Anglo-European and American: Robert Graves’s Good Bye to all That, Vera Brittain’s Testament of Youth, Erich Maria Remarque’s All Quiet on the Western Front, Ernest Hemingway’s A Farewell to Arms. “You are all a lost generation:” Hemingway claimed to have gotten the famous line—used as an epigraph to his 1925 novel of war-ruined expatriates in Paris, The Sun Also Rises—from a conversation with Gertrude Stein, who in turn is said to have heard it originally it from a French garage-owner, complaining of the curious anomie of a young mechanic assistant who had survived the war. Thus in life and art alike, the experience of fighting and dying young became a signature motif of World War I on the western front and elsewhere, as did frequently also that of perhaps surviving the war but in the process returning home too physically or psychologically damaged to resume anything resembling the patterns of peacetime existence. -

He has been compared to Bartok and Kodaly for his research into English music Symphonic Band I I tradition and his compositions using English folk songs. In October 1957, the work on his nearly completed ninth symphony was interrupted by celebrations for his eighty-fifth birthday. The Halle Orchestra, celebrating the beginning of their one hundredth season, chose to give an all Flourish For Glorious John (1957) Ralph Vaughan Williams Vaughan Williams program for their opening concert on October 16, four days before his (1872-1958) I I birthday. -

HARVARD UNIVERSITY DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC Report to the FRIENDS OF MUSIC 2016-2017 1 Summer, 2017 Dear Friends of the Music Department, I am writing as I conclude my first year as Department’s chair, and am pleased to be able to report that we have accomplished quite a bit in the last twelve months. What first comes to my mind is our successful development of a new undergraduate music cur- riculum, which took several years and many wonderful ideas, debates, drafts, and research hours to create. We revamped the requirements for Harvard’s music concentration to be more flexible and responsive to what students need in the 21st century, and to better represent the department’s strengths. In addition, the Department accepted its first cohort of undergraduates to the Harvard/ Berklee dual degree program, and eleven students will begin the program this fall. In faculty news, there are both comings and goings. It was a bittersweet day in December when our colleague Tom Kelly gave the final lecture for his seminal “First Nights.” After 22 years of teaching the course and commissioning new works for each iteration, Kelly told the students assembled in Sanders Theatre, “I hope you do what you can to make music and important part of your world. I hope you do what you can to make music an important part of your life.” Tom will be on leave this fall, and officially retires from Harvard in December 2017. We will all miss his grace and wit in our halls. In news of appointments, it gives me great pleasure to announce four new faculty members: Braxton Shelley was appointed assistant professor and is already moving into his office in the music building. -
