INTRODUCTION Discovery of a small brown species of Gynacantha, apparently undescribed, from southern Peru prompted us to examine specimens of all the small New World species of Gynacantha as well as other small neotropical aeshnids. The informationin WIL- LIAMSON (1923) and the collections of R.W. Garrison and D.R. Paulson were suffi- cient for us to carry outthis analysis. We have made no comparisons with the 65 nomi- nal species of Gynacantha in the Old World(21 inAfrica, 35 inAsia, and9 in Australia, New Guinea, and Pacific islands), as there is no indication the two hemispheres have any species in common. The ponds are filled with water during - the rainy season (Oct. March) but dry up entirely by the end ofthe dry season (Aug. - Sept.). Data compiled from field records, odonatological collections and literature showed that Brazil in G. bifida stays on the wing throughout the year. Apparently, the univoltine life with 2 of sp. possesses a cycle generations larvae, one during the warm- and er rainy season and another in the early dry season (Oct./Nov. - Jan./Feb. Feb./March - May/June, respectively). Mud attached to the terminal abdominal seg- V ments of specimens in odonatological collections was used as an evidence of an ovi- position mode comparableto that observed in the field. Estos organismos, por ser consumidores secundarios pueden ser utilizados para medir el balance energético y el estado de perturbación de los ecosistemas amenazados como el bosque seco tropical. En Colombia, estos ambientes se restringen al Caribe y los valles interandinos, en remanentes que representan el 8% de su cobertura original. En esta revisión bibliográfica, se resalta la relación entre odonatos y estos ambientes, proporcionando bases para posteriores estudios ecológicos. Se compiló el listado de especies de odonatos, junto con su estado de conservación, que presentan algún grado de relación con el bosque seco colombiano, por medio de la búsqueda en bases de datos y bibliografía científica. Concluyendo que, de algún modo, 224 especies correspondientes al 64% del total de odonatos reportados para el país está relacionado con estas áreas. -
