Nevertheless, there are few studies on the diversity of social wasps occurring in this region. This study presents a list of social wasps (Hymenoptera, Vespidae, Polistinae) collected actively with attractive bait in three rainforest fragments in Acre. A total of 758 wasps belonging to 11 genera and 36 species were collected. Nineteen species were new distribution records for Acre and three others were new records for Brazil. Based on our results, further investigations should lead to a significant increase in Polistinae diversity in this region, producing information for biogeographic studies and management of natural areas. The mesosomal skeletomuscular system of workers of Myrmecia nigrocincta was examined. A broad spectrum of methods was used, including micro-computed tomography combined with computer-based 3D reconstruction. An optimized combination of advanced techniques not only accelerates the acquisition of high quality anatomical data, but also facilitates a very detailed documentation and vi- sualization. This includes fne surface details, complex confgurations of sclerites, and also internal soft parts, for instance muscles with their precise insertion sites. Myrmeciinae have arguably retained a number of plesiomorphic mesosomal features, even though recent mo- lecular phylogenies do not place them close to the root of ants. Our mapping analyses based on previous morphological studies and recent phylogenies revealed few mesosomal apomorphies linking formicid subgroups. Only fve apomorphies were retrieved for the family, and interestingly three of them are missing in Myrmeciinae. Nevertheless, it is apparent that profound mesosomal transformations took place in the early evolution of ants, especially in the fightless workers. -

418 Florida Entomologist 84(3) September 2001 SOME EFFECTS OF GROUP SIZE ON THE OUTPUT OF BEGINNING NESTS OF MISCHOCYTTARUS MEXICANUS (HYMENOPTERA: VESPIDAE) RONALD CLOUSE Department of Zoology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611-8525 Current address: 120 W 45th St., 39th Fl., New York, NY 10036 ABSTRACT It is not known how pleometrosis (nest initiation in groups) and haplometrosis (nest initia- tion alone) are both maintained in the paper wasp Mischocyttarus mexicanus (Saussure). To answer this question, reliable measurements of the reproductive success of each tactic are needed. It is shown here that females that begin nests alone are more likely to raise a few daughters in rapid succession rather than many daughters at the same time. Females in small groups or alone also tend to have smaller first daughters than those females working in large groups. This difference in resource allocation between small and large groups causes measurements of per capita rates of production to correlate differently with group size de- pending on whether the number of cells, number of offspring, or weight of offspring added per day is measured. These data are consistent with the observation that haplometrotic fe- males receive more predator and conspecific attacks than pleometrotic females, and thus produce their first daughters quickly to guard the nest. In addition the chronic mystery of a negative correlation between per capita productivity and group size in social insects is shown to be an expected outcome and not necessarily an indication that efficiency decreases with an increase in group size. Fennici 43: 390–406. A review of previously published cladistic analyses of Polistes is presented. The two most recent analyses of Polistes are shown to be largely consistent phylogenetically. Although the taxonomy implied by each differs, this difference is shown to be mostly due to taxon sampling. After the review, a phylogenetic analysis of Polistes — the most data-rich yet undertaken — is presented. The analysis includes new data and the data from previously published analyses. The differing conclusions of the previous studies are discussed in light of the new analysis. After discussing the status of subge- neric taxonomy in Polistes, the new phylogeny is used to test an important hypothesis regarding the origin of social behavior: the haplodiploidy hypothesis of Hamilton. Prior phylogenetic analyses so while these studies achieved their goal, with within Polistes resolutions leading to rejection of Emery’s Rule, they had little to say about broader phylogenetic Cladistic analysis of species-level relationships patterns within the genus. -

Here, we compared a primary and a secondary forest each on two continents using four different sampling methods. Winkler sampling, pitfalls, and four types of above- and below-ground baits (dead, crushed insects; melezitose; living termites; living mealworms/grasshoppers) were applied on four plots (4 × 4 grid points) on each site. Although less diverse than Winkler samples and pitfalls, subterranean baits provided a remarkable ant community. Our baiting system provided a large dataset to systematically quantify strata and dietary specialisation in tropical rainforest ants. Compared to above-ground baits, 10–28% of the species at subterranean baits were overall more common (or unique to) below ground, indicating a fauna that was truly specialised to this stratum. Species turnover was particularly high in the primary forests, both concerning above-ground and subterranean baits and between grid points within a site. This suggests that secondary forests are more impoverished, especially concerning their subterranean fauna. Although subterranean ants rarely displayed specific preferences for a bait type, they were in general more specialised than above-ground ants; this was true for entire communities, but also for the same species if they foraged in both strata. Such behaviour is favored by the high, variable temperatureof their terrestrial and habitat by the fact that dragonflies are relatively large insects and thus ex- change heat with the environment comparatively slowly. Different species may thermoregulate behaviorally by controlling the external heat load or physiol- ogically by altering the amount of heat generated by or dissipated from the thoracic muscles. The former method is characteristic of perchers, which are usually in a situation that permits considerable modulation of intercepted solar radiation, mostly by postural adjustments. There is also evidence that some species may perch more frequently in the shade when ambient tem- perature is high. Fliers, by contrast, have little opportunity to control inter- cepted solar radiation but continually generate large amounts of heat during flight. They may alter their rate of heat loss by controlling haemolymph flow from the thorax or their rate of heat gain by changing the proportion of gliding vs. flapping flight. Some species combine behavioral and physiological modes of regulation.Adaptive geographic, seasonal, and inter-habitat variation occurs in the responses of dragonflies to temperature.Voluntary avoidance of high temperature seems most closely adapted to the thermal environment. and Temperature responses thermoregulatory ability also vary with age and sex. The effects of temperature on the activity patterns of Odonata and the adaptive significance of thermoregulationhave yet to be rigorously demon- strated in most cases. -

We present the first record of one of the most cryptic of army ants, Cheliomyrmex morosus, in Panama and list a diverse array of associated arthropods. The late discovery of these ants and high diversity of their associates indicates that much remains to be discovered even in one of the most intensely studied research areas. NESTMATE COPULATION IN THE NEOTROPICAL EUSOCIAL WASP POLISTES INSTABILIS DE SAUSSURE (HYMENOPTERA: VESPIDAE) BY SEAN O'DoNNELL Department of Entomology University of California Davis, CA 95616 ABSTRACT Copulation between individually marked nestmates of the Neotropical eusocial wasp Polistes instabilis is reported. Polistes copulations are rarely observed in the field; this observation is the first documented case of nestmate copulation in the genus. Hamil ton ( 1964) predicted high rates of nestmate copulation for tropical Polistes populations which have asynchronous colony cycles rela tive to temperate populations. Nestmate copulation may lead to rel atively high levels of inbreeding in tropical Polistes species. INTRODUCTION Relative to temperate congeners, populations of tropical Polistes species are asynchronous in colony foundation and repro duction (West Eberhard 1969; Richards 1978; Young 1986). Even in seasonal tropical habitats, Polistes colonies can be found simul taneously in different stages of development (S. O'D. pers. obs.). Hamilton (1964) predicted that copulation among nestmates will be most common in tropical Polistes species because when repro ductives emerge asynchronously from different colonies, the avail ability of non-nestmate mating partners is reduced. Polistes nestmates tend to be close genetic relatives (reviewed in Reeve 1991 ); therefore, rates of inbreeding should be higher in tropical than in temperate Polistes species if nestmate copulations are fre quent. These predictions remain largely untested. Here I report copulation between individually marked nestmates of the Neotropical eusocial wasp Polistes instabilis. Polistes copu lations are rarely observed in the field (West Eberhard 1969; Manuscript received 21 December 1993. 33 34 Psyche [Vol. 101 1994] O'Donnell 35 Noonan 1978; Hook 1982), and copulation between identified nest forager, ranking fourth highest among 22 workers in rate of nectar mates has not previously been reported.
