It is estimated that, by 1980, the state will have 11 tunior colleges with an enrollment of 22,463. As the new ones are established, they are expected to provide most, if not all, of the less-than-baccalaureate programs. At present there are two public community tumor colleges, one public tunior college branch of the State University, and four private church-related colleges. These last offer transfer or 2-year general programs and training for personnel of their own denominational group, but little vocational/technical training. The statewide system of 15 area vocational/technical schools offers some academic course work beyond high school. Three current problems: (1) coordination of vocational school programs with the tunior colleges to avoid a funding crisis, (2) local pressures to convert community colleges into 4-year institutions, and (3) present shortage of funds that may extend development of the tumor college system to 10 or 15 years. The importance of the Social Studies Curriculum Frameworks to Arkansas K-12 education cannot be overlooked. Parents and educators readily agree on the importance of developing reading, writing and math skills. They even agree in our technological society on the importance of teaching science, but what about social studies? It is through the study of social studies that students become aware of the world around them and how that world directly impacts their lives. By learning about economics, civics and government, geography and history, students are able to develop core beliefs and values, an understanding of how the past has shaped the present and will shape the future, and the interconnectedness of the content areas.

    Arkansas Airwaves Ray Poindexter A little more than a year after radio broadcasting was first heard nationally, Arkansas' first regular licensed station went on the air. The state's progress has not usually been as rapid in most other fields. At first, radio was considered to be a novelty. There was no advertising revenue to support it. Many of the early Arkansas stations left the air. Those that remained were jolted by the Great Depression. By the time things started getting better economic- ally, the nation became involved in World War ll. It brought various broadcasting restrictions and a shortage of products to be advertised. Radio's economic heyday in Arkansas came after the war. New stations began to spring up in many towns in the state. Soon the rushing radio surge was met head-on by a new and threatening medium --television! The question of survival was uppermost in the minds of some radio station owners. In order to live with the new force that had a picture as well as sound, many Arkansas stations had to make necessary adjust- ments. Today, both radio and television are alive and well in Arkansas. Williams Committee Member Abstract More than a thousand men from northwest Arkansas served in the Union Army during the American Civil War. The conflict devastated a region that had previously enjoyed impressive economic growth. The years of suffering during the war eventually left the region largely depopulated. As people returned to the region after the war was over, unionists and their families fought not only to rebuild, but to secure the benefits they felt their loyalty to the federal government deserved.
