Sep. 2021 1 ‘Pageantis & sportis & plesand pastymes’: Scottish drama until 1650 Scarcely any Scottish play-texts survive from before 1650. Yet pre-Reformation Scotland abounded with words for theatrical and quasi-theatrical performance: pageant, sport and pastime are joined by play, game, farce, guising, mask, procession, clerk play, comedy, tragedy, ludus, riding, entres, dance, interlude, jape, ballade, gest, jousting and mumming.1 This range of terms might seem to suggest, in spite of the lack of texts, not only a rich range of performance practices but carefully distinguished dramatic genres.
