ADVAITA, CALEB A. MORSE1,2 AND DOUGLAS LADD3 ABSTRACT. – A total of 154 lichens, four lichenicolous fungi, and one allied fungus were collected by the authors from 2004 to 2015 from Pipestone National Monument (PNM), in Pipestone County, on the Prairie Coteau of southwestern Minnesota. Twelve additional species collected by previous researchers, but not found by the authors, bring the total number of taxa known for PNM to 171. This represents a substantial increase over previous reports for PNM, likely due to increased intensity of field work, and also to the marked expansion of corticolous and anthropogenic substrates since the site was first surveyed in 1899. Reexamination of 116 vouchers deposited in MIN and the PNM herbarium led to the exclusion of 48 species previously reported from the site. Crustose lichens are the most common growth form, comprising 65% of the lichen diversity. Sioux Quartzite provided substrate for 43% of the lichen taxa collected. Saxicolous lichen communities were characterized by sampling four transects on cliff faces and low outcrops. An annotated checklist of the lichens of the site is provided, as well as a list of excluded taxa. We report 24 species (including 22 lichens and two lichenicolous fungi) new for Minnesota: Acarospora boulderensis, A. contigua, A. erythrophora, A. strigata, Agonimia opuntiella, Arthonia clemens, A. muscigena, Aspicilia americana, Bacidina delicata, Buellia tyrolensis, Caloplaca flavocitrina, C. lobulata, C. -

HANSEN1 ABSTRACT. – Lichens were surveyed across nine ecologically sensitive areas of the U.S. Army’s Redstone Arsenal in Madison County, Alabama. From a total of 464 collections, 151 species in 64 genera were identified, including 12 state records and three new species currently being described. Prior to this study, only eight lichen species had been documented from the Redstone Arsenal and less than 40 were known from Madison County. Newly reported lichens for Alabama include Caloplaca pollinii, Clauzadea chondrodes, Enchylium coccophorum, Hypotrachyna dentella, Lepraria xanthonica, Phaeophyscia hirsuta, Phaeophyscia leana, Physciella chloantha, Physconia leucoleiptes, Physconia subpallida, Punctelia graminicola, and Usnea halei. Results from this study represent the first lichen survey of the Redstone Arsenal and will serve as a baseline for future studies. INTRODUCTION Lichens of northern Alabama are poorly studied and virtually no records have been published from Madison County. Though many papers documenting lichens from nearby regions exist, including the Great Smoky Mountains (Lendemer et al. 2013) and Southern Appalachian Mountains (Dey 1978), there are no published lichen reports from this area of northern Alabama. One state-wide checklist documented two lichen species from Madison County (Hansen 2003). A search of the Consortium of North American Lichen Herbaria (CNALH 2017) resulted in only 38 lichen specimens from Madison County, including eight from Redstone Arsenal (hereafter abbreviated RA). -

Lendemer: Institute of Systematic Botany, The New York Botanical Garden, Bronx, NY 10458-5126 USA ABSTRACT. Based upon voucher collections, 108 lichen species are reported from the Indiana Forest Alliance Ecoblitz area, a 900 acre unit in Morgan-Monroe and Yellowwood State Forests, Brown and Monroe Counties, Indiana. The lichen biota of the study area was characterized as: i) dominated by species with green coccoid photobionts (80% of taxa); ii) comprised of 49% species that reproduce primarily with lichenized diaspores vs. 44% that reproduce primarily through sexual ascospores; iii) comprised of 65% crustose taxa, 29% foliose taxa, and 6% fruticose taxa; iv) one wherein many species are rare (e.g., 55% of species were collected fewer than three times) and fruticose lichens other than Cladonia were entirely absent; and v) one wherein cyanolichens were poorly represented, comprising only three species. Taxonomic diversity ranged from 21 to 56 species per site, with the lowest diversity sites concentrated in riparian corridors and the highest diversity sites on ridges. Low Gap Nature Preserve, located within the study area, was found to have comparable species richness to areas outside the nature preserve, although many species rare in the study area were found only outside preserve boundaries. Sets of rare species are delimited and discussed, as are observations as to the overall low abundance of lichens on corticolous substrates and the presence of many unhealthy foliose lichens on mature tree boles. -

Macrolichen diversity was first catalogued by Moore (1968), followed by Harris (1990, 1995). “Lichens of North America” also contains photographs and descriptions of many of Florida’s macrolichens (Brodo et al. 2001). The aim of this book is to compliment these other resources and provide more field oriented keys to the macrolichen diversity. We hope to encourage the incorporation of lichens into field oriented ecological studies. Many of the species included in the keys are based lists and information from Harris (1990, 1995). In a few cases with a few rare Genera, Harris’ key very similar. -

Homo sapiens isn’t the only species to come in all shapes and sizes. So does Monk’s Hood Lichen (fungal partner: Hypogymnia physodes). Lichens “learn” from their environment. The blackened thallus (top left) has learned what to do in case of too much light, while the rather pallid thallus below it what to do in response to too little light: thin its cortex. The top middle thallus is hunkered down for yet another bout of not enough nutrients in support of too much potential for growth, whereas the thallus below knows nothing of such things. Notice how the two thalli at right bear fungal reproductive structures: the top one peppered with pycnidia, the bottom one supporting a curious apothecial “fairy ring”1. There was a time when lichenologists paid real attention to such things. Maybe someday they’ll do so again. Photo montage by Tim Wheeler. ____________ 1The concentric “fairy ring” arrangement of the apothecia points to a brief coming into phase of physiologic “stress” that, rather than triggering soredia production, as is usual for this species, triggered apothecial production instead (for more on phenomena of this kind, see Essay VI). This thallus and the pycnidiate one above it were collected in central Canada (the others came from a small area in intermontane British Columbia); they could represent a separate species characterized, e.g., by the frequent presence of sexual and asexual fungal fruiting structures; but then again maybe not. -

Notiziario della Società Lichenologica Italiana Vol. 33 - 2020 Amiche e amici lichenologi, eccovi il 33° volume del Notiziario della Società Lichenologica, un numero anomalo per tempi e modi, in un anno anomalo. Non essendosi svolto il nostro convegno annuale sapete già che non troverete in questo volume gli Atti: a inizio volume l’attualità esterna arriva in queste pagine, in due contributi narrativi scritti durante il lockdown e, purtroppo, nel ricordo dedicato a Fausto Ceni. Riprendono le interviste, con Marco Ciardi, per il piacere di dialogare con realtà al di fuori del mondo lichenologico, a seguire un excursus nell’illustrazione lichenologica, un interessante contributo sui licheni acquatici, e un punto sulle reti di biomonitoraggio. Sul finale di volume si torna alle attività dello scorso anno, con il resoconto dell’escursione e i riassunti di alcuni dei miniseminari di avvicinamento, riuniti qui nell’auspicio che interessino nuovi aspiranti lichenologi. Solo a metà mattinata i raggi del sole raggiungevano le fronde e il sottobosco. Creavano fili dorati trapassando le verdi foglie nuove della primavera. Nell’atmosfera senza brezza, la luce esaltava il volo degli insetti e i granelli di polvere e pollini. Le sagome bitorzolute degli immensi castagni, dalla corteccia nodosa e umida, creavano giochi di ombre sul terreno ricco di foglie e piante e humus.
