Committee on Trustees (COT) Governance Review May 2018 In a March 2017 letter to the community, PEA shared that in response to recommendations made by Choate Hall & Stewart, the trustees would be “conducting a further governance review, via the Committee on Trustees, to research best practices in school governance and benchmark PEA against other institutions. Topics to be reviewed include the composition and culture of the Trustees, length of terms, ongoing Trustee education, and the structure and frequency of Trustee meetings. Actions taken as a result of this review will be shared with the community when completed.” We are providing an update of the work to date, as the review process is still ongoing. Governance at Phillips Exeter Academy lies with the Trustees. Drawing upon the expertise of a diverse body of alumni volunteers, the Trustees oversee the administration of the school and the management of its financial and physical resources. The Trustees work closely with the principal and administrators, who lead the day-to-day operations of the Academy, and with the faculty, who focus on matters related to the curriculum and the student experience. While each group has its own role and responsibilities, all of us work together informed by a collaborative spirit and a shared passion for Exeter’s educational mission, a belief in the potential for transformation and discovery within all of our students, and a vision for Exeter’s ongoing excellence and leadership in secondary school education. Over the course of the past year, the COT has reviewed best practices, shared and compared governance structures with the members of the Eight Schools Association (Andover, Choate Rosemary Hall, Deerfield, Hotchkiss, Lawrenceville, Northfield Mount Hermon, St. -

FIRST PERSON / Yingtong Guo ’18 Revisiting Deerfield’s Return to Coeducation 92 | THE COMMON ROOM 93 FIRST PERSON / Yingtong Guo ’18 Yingtong Guo, currently in her first year at UCLA, was one of two inaugural Montague Grant recipients last spring. Funded by Richard W. Montague ’52, the grant promotes research and writing on the history and purpose of Deerfield Academy to current students. Using documents from the Academy Archives, Yingtong examined the early days of the Academy’s “return to coeducation” in 1989, and using her research as a starting point, she reflected on the progress of gender equality at Deerfield and in the world at large through that 29-year lens. What follows is an excerpted version of Yingtong’s essay. In the early 1970s, some of Deerfield’s peer schools, such as Phillips In spite of such resistance, a transition plan went into motion. Although our mission emphasizes Gospel values and Catholic Social Teaching, close to 10% of our students are of other faiths. We welcome students and families of all faiths, and this gives our school a diversity that teaches respect for all. 2. Did you know that Holy Trinity offers Spanish in all grades and Advanced Math in Grades 5-8? Our 8 th Graders graduate from HTS with such a strong proficiency that they often test into Spanish 2 in high school! Grade 8 students taking Advanced Math follow an Algebra 1 course and typically test into Geometry or Algebra 2 in high school! 3. Did you know HTS students test in the top 23% in standardized testing scores? HTS has rigorous academic standards and curriculum. We do not follow Common Core standards. 4. Did you know that Holy Trinity has a state of the art computer lab? Classrooms have iPads and Smart Boards, and technology is integrated into our curriculum. Our students graduate with an above- average knowledge of Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel and PowerPoint), internet proficiency and safety, and simple computer programming. 5. Cadet and Advanced bands are led by Connecticut Future Musicians, and our students are well-represented in Regional and All-State Concert, Symphonic, and Jazz bands, and Flute Choir.
