Group Travel Aviation Heritage Lincolnshire is renowned as the ‘Home of the Royal Air Force’ and has a vast aviation heritage. The county’s flat, open countryside and its location made it ideal for the development of airfields during World War I, and in World War II Lincolnshire became the most important home to Bomber Command. Several airfields are still operational and serving the modern day RAF while former airfields, museums and memorials are witness to the bravery of the men and women who served here in most turbulent times. A fascinating exhibition recalls in words and photographs the early years of the airfield from its origins as a Royal Naval Air Service Station and the establishment of the College as the first Military Air Academy in the world to its present day operation. Large print guide BATTLE OF BRITAIN Ops Block Battle of Britain: Ops Block This Operations Block (Ops Block) was the most important building on the airfield during the Battle of Britain in 1940. From here, Duxford’s fighter squadrons were directed into battle against the Luftwaffe. Inside, you will meet the people who worked in these rooms and helped to win the battle. Begin your visit in the cinema. Step into the cinema to watch a short film about the Battle of Britain. Duration: approximately 4 minutes DUXFORD ROOM Duxford’s Role The Battle of Britain was the first time that the Second World War was experienced by the British population. During the battle, Duxford supported the defence of London. Several squadrons flew out of this airfield. They were part of Fighter Command, which was responsible for defending Britain from the air. To coordinate defence, the Royal Air Force (RAF) divided Britain into geographical ‘groups’, subdivided into ‘sectors.’ Each sector had an airfield known as a ‘sector station’ with an Operations Room (Ops Room) that controlled its aircraft. Information about the location and number of enemy aircraft was communicated directly to each Ops Room. This innovative system became known as the Dowding System, named after its creator, Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding, the head of Fighter Command. The Dowding System’s success was vital to winning the Battle of Britain. Fighter Command Group Layout August 1940 Duxford was located within ‘G’ sector, which was part of 12 Group. This group was primarily responsible for defending the industrial Midlands and the north of England, but also assisted with the defence of the southeast as required. -

We have carefully considered the available data and analyses. ADEC believes the available scientific evidence does not support EPA’s boundary recommendations which substantially expand upon those recommended by us. ADEC believes public health will be protected and the applicable legal requirements met by taking the actions described in this letter, which include a proposed nonattainment boundary for the Fairbanks area that is larger than originally proposed by ADEC, but smaller than proposed by EPA. For Juneau, we are requesting EPA revisit certain assumptions and include data from 2008 before making a final decision on whether a nonattainment designation is warranted, and if so, the appropriate boundaries of the nonattainment area. Protecting public health is a goal we share with EPA. As you are already aware, we are proactively and expeditiously working with the local governments to address identified PM2.5 concerns in Fairbanks and Juneau. To this end, ADEC does not believe EPA’s proposed boundaries will ultimately assist in protecting public health. -
