New year, new partnerships, new Center. MIKE ARMS Dear Friend of the Animals,

Thank you so much for your continued support of Helen Woodward Animal Center. Just when I think things couldn’t get any more exciting around here we have embarked on a new partnership with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home in the UK to provide our very first cross-cultural Business of Saving Lives conference here in San Diego.

After my recent trip to Poland, it became very apparent that there was a bigger need than THE SKY’S THE LIMIT AS we even realized to bring our “best practices” for animal welfare to organizations around WE GO INTO 2019 WITH the world. During and after the conference we were bombarded with emails and requests AN INCREDIBLE NEW from Estonia, Romania, Africa, Bulgaria, and Japan to bring our program to where it is needed the most. We met with the Battersea team during the conference and as they are ADOPTION CENTER WITH doing similar work it seemed like the perfect marriage of our two programs to benefit DOUBLE THE EXAM AND animal welfare personnel on both continents. If you have driven by in the past year you know the new building is going up fast. We are excited to say we should be in our new home in May of 2019. Our Adoptions staff has worked tirelessly to never “miss a beat” during this transition phase that required a lot of extra time, work and energy on the part of every team member. In the end we did over 2,700 adoptions in 2018 – an astounding number with the limited amount of space and medical area we had at our disposal. The sky’s the limit as we go into 2019 with an incredible new adoption center with double the exam and surgery space and indoor/ outdoor kennels. We are so thankful for all our friends who made this project possible with their generosity and kindness. It is truly overwhelming to think of everyone who gave to bring this to fruition. We are especially honored by Helen’s family and their dedication to this new building for the Center.

As we move into the coming year we are working hard to care for the pets of the homeless throughout San Diego, ensuring that they have vaccinations and have been spayed or February 7, 2019, windows have been installed and the new Center is beginning to take its final neutered, as well as ensuring they have the proper nutrition to stay healthy and happy form. through our Pets Without Walls program. We are looking to expand the program in the months ahead and add new partners to best serve our community.

Your Center will never rest when there are lives to save and education to share, but we couldn’t do it without you.

HELEN WOODWARD THERAPEUTIC RIDING CLIENT GALLOPS TO FAIRYTALE FINALE!

Each year, Helen Woodward Animal Center’s Therapeutic Riding Program shows off the skills of its riders in an annual Center Riding Show. This November, a special student named Elizabeth “Lizzy” Simas took those skills to a national competition and her quest to win came with a real-life fairytale ending. Two pups in for check up.

IN EARLY OCTOBER, Helen Woodward Animal Center received a call from a rescue pups partner in Palm Springs.O A litter of 10 puppies, — whose mother had just been hit by a car and killed— was in desperate trouble. The frail newborns would need weeks of round-the-clock care and limited space, budget, and staffing at local rescues provided few options. Helen Woodward Animal Center was ready to help. The Center transport team quickly made the trip to Palm Springs, where one of the puppies had already lost the fight. Meanwhile, Center foster staff went to work calling devoted foster volunteers for temporary homes and caretakers to take in the delicate babies.

The remaining nine tiny puppies (four boys and five girls – each small enough to hold in one hand), were brought back to the Center for medical checks, and then taken to the homes of four caring fosters. With daily care and nurturing, the puppies made major strides, and a surprisingly large number of friends and fans. Nicknamed “the W Puppies,” Warner, Walter, Wilson, Wilshire, Wanda, Whisper, Wine, Winni and Winter had social media buzzing. “We were getting an incredible number of calls for these puppies,” stated Helen Woodward Animal Center Puppies Winni and Wanda show off their cute mugs for our cameras.
