During the broadcast of PUPPY BOWL XII on Sunday, February 7, at 3:00 PM ET, the two organizations will officially announce the formation of the Puppy Bowl Hall of Fame, which encourages the adoption of older shelter animals while honoring some of the legendary pups from Puppy Bowls past. Joining the Puppy Bowl “Rufferee” for the announcement is football’s all-time sack king, BRUCE SMITH, who is the Pro Football Hall of Fame’s Gold Jacket Ambassador to the Puppy Bowl Hall of Fame. Like many other heroes of the game, Smith is a lifelong animal lover and a longtime fan of the Puppy Bowl. “I want to express how proud the Pro Football Hall of Fame and I am to team up with Animal Planet to introduce the Puppy Bowl Hall of Fame,” said Smith. “Over the past 12 years, Puppy Bowl has been responsible for countless animal adoptions. If you are considering a pet, please consider adopting from your local shelter or rescue. In addition to puppies and kittens, you’ll find that there are also fantastic older animals that would make tremendous additions to any home.” Smith, who was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009, is the National Football League’s all-time career leader with 200 career sacks. He was COMMITMENT • INTEGRITY • COURAGE • RESPECT • EXCELLENCE selected first overall in the 1985 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills and quickly became a dominant force that led the team to an unprecedented four straight Super Bowls. Smith is among a select number of players to be named to two of the NFL’s All-Decade Teams (1980s and 1990s). PUPPY BOWL XII is produced for Animal Planet by Discovery Studios. Welcome to The Rundown! January 29, 2021 Welcome to The DJJ Rundown, a quick and informative way for our agency, providers and community partners to stay connected. We look forward to bringing you important news and updates on what’s happening with Team DJJ as well as sharing some fun topics and ideas. Thank you for taking a moment out of your day with us and as always, thank you for supporting our agency’s work in helping Florida’s youth and families. The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice Honors Juvenile Justice Teacher of the Year This week, the Florida Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) awarded Jesus Gonzalez with the 2020 Juvenile Justice Teacher of the Year Award. The Juvenile Justice Teacher of the Year Award is presented to an outstanding educator who uses innovative and creative teaching methods and who also promotes a positive school environment. Mr. Jesus Gonzalez is a 20-year veteran educator who currently teaches language arts, reading and social studies at Miami Youth Academy. Mr. Gonzalez creates a classroom environment that includes varied instructional strategies to engage with students to help them make a successful transition into and out of the program. Mr. Gonzalez cites technology as an essential instrument in his teaching, utilizing a smart board, laptops and a virtual classroom tool to allow teachers, staff and students to collaborate in the same interconnected learning environment. His embrace of technology allowed for a seamless transition when the program temporarily moved from in-class instruction to distance learning. This use of technology also allows program youth to collaborate with students from the University of Miami participating in the Exchange for Change program which offers writing courses and letter exchanges between incarcerated students and writers studying on the outside.

It has grown from a one-day into a two-week festival featuring a vast range of events, parties, and a championship football game. Fifty years on, half of the population of the United States and a worldwide television audience participate in Super Bowl activities and festivities either live or virtually. Television, marketing, and a wide range of media platforms have aided and abetted the growth of this celebration of football and consumption. Although there are many ways to describe the Super Bowl it is the nineteenth century vocabulary of the economist Thorstein Veblen that best captures its essence. In Veblen’s words it is a case of ‘conspicuous consumption’ now running on steroids. For those of us who remember the first Super Bowl it seems a bit surprising that the National Football League championship game has reached age fifty. Even more surprising may be the fact that this championship football game has morphed into a mid-winter national celebration on a scale that dwarfs all other sporting events in this country and rivals the biggest events across the globe.
