For several years, faculty and staff have been donating to a campaign to fund many student scholarships in different departments. “The campaign shows how much we value what we do, ” said Mary Ann Watters, co-chair of the Faculty and Staff Campaign with Paul Stephenson. Each department has its own representative who stirs up interest and does the fundraising. About 120 volunteers are involved in organizing the campaign. On the morning of August 5th 1976 at 3:45 AM a catastrophe occurred to the movement of the great clock in Westminster Palace. The damage was so great that for a brief time it was considered to be beyond repair and a new way to move the hands on the four huge exterior dials was considered. Asked “regardless of whom you support, which candidate do you think shows better sportsmanship,” 53% said Obama, 29% said Romney, and 18% had no opinion. And while partisan politics may have affected that reading, the results from respondents who identified themselves as independent may be more telling: 58% said Obama showed better sportsmanship, 28% Romney, and 14% had no opinion. The poll was conducted among 688 randomly selected people across the country, including people on cell phones, of whom 487 said they followed sports at least somewhat. The poll has a margin of error of 3.8%; 4.5% for sports fans. The poll also found that to the question “which candidate do you think would make a better football coach,” Obama drew 48% to Romney’s 30%, and a wider margin among independents, 52% - 31%. Asked which party has more of the “win at all costs” attitude commonly associated with sports, 43% said Republicans, 36% Democrats, and among independents it was 48% to 38% for the Republicans. (The margin of error for independent voters was 5.9%). “One might expect partisan responses to these questions, so the results among independents is especially telling,” noted Rick Gentile, director of the poll, which is conducted by the Sharkey Institute.

Championship rings are king at pawnshops, where they’re exchanged for cold cash. 72 ALL ABOUT THE MONEY BROCK WILLIAMS ISN’T happy to hear from me. I’ve tracked down the obscure former Patriots cornerback to ask about the Super Bowl XXXVI ring he pawned a decade ago for $2,600. “Ah, man, that was a bad time,” he says over the phone, let- ting the space between his words linger. “I’m just trying to put that all behind me.” Unfortunately for Williams, that’s hard to do when America sees your ring every week in the opening montage of the hit TV show Pawn Stars, harder still when celebrity pawnbroker Rick Harrison brags about being the guy who has it. Gold, cars, Rolexes … yawn. But a Super Bowl ring? “You want the thing a guy worked his whole life to get,” says Harrison. His Gold & Silver Pawn Shop in Las Vegas is a window onto our times, with Harrison the appraiser of our excess. Desperate people populate his tales, many of them jocks. There was the time in 1999, for instance, when IBF super featherweight champ Diego Corrales, who was reckless in the ring and with his money, traded in his title belt. “I think I gave him $1,500 and sold it five months later for $3,000,” Harrison says. In another sad case, long jumper Joe Greene ventured into Harrison’s store in 2003 with the bronze medal he’d won at the Atlanta Olympics Fittingly, Budd set up shop in seven years earlier.
