Pacific Insects Monograph 28: 119-211 20 June 1971 AN ANNOTATED BIBLIOGRAPHY OF BATFLIES (Diptera: Streblidae; Nycteribiidae)1 By T. C. Maa2 Abstract. This bibliography lists, up to the end of 1970, about 800 references relating to the batflies or Streblidae and Nycteribiidae. Annotations are given regarding the contents, dates of publication and other information of the references listed. A subject index is appended. The following bibliography is the result of an attempt to catalogue and partly digest all the literature (published up to the end of 1970) relating to the Systematics and other aspects of the 2 small dipterous families of batflies, i.e., Streblidae and Nycter ibiidae. The bibliography includes a list of about 800 references, with annotations, and a subject index. Soon after the start of the compilation of literature in 1960, it was found that many odd but often important records were scattered in books and other publica tions on travels, expeditions, speleology, mammalogy, parasitology, etc. A number of such publications are not available even in the largest entomological libraries and might well have been inadvertently overlooked. While some 50 additional references are provisionally omitted because of the lack of sufficient information, new con tributions on the subject are almost continuously coming out from various sources. This bibliography does not, therefore, pretend to be complete and exhaustive. The time and effort devoted toward the compilation would be worthwhile should this bibliography be of interest to its readers and the annotations and subject index be of benefit. The manuscript has been revised several times and it is hoped that not too many errors, omissions and other discrepancies have developed during the course of preparation. -

(Poaceae)] ears in the Americas. Four of these species are sweet corn pests in America north of Mexico: Chaetopsis massyla (Walker), Euxesta annonae (Fabricius), E. eluta Loew, and E. stigmatias Loew. Adults of these four species appear at the beginning of each season following maize-free periods, suggesting other plants act as food sources for maintenance and development of these flies. Studies were conducted in Florida, USA, to evaluate the suitability of several crop and non-crop plants commonly occurring near maize plantings as developmental hosts for these flies. In 1895 the writer prepared a list of the Diptera of Florida,' based chiefly on material collected while living in St. Augustine, 1880-88, a collecting trip in March, 1891, and again in 1894, a collection made by Mrs. Annie Trumbull Slosson, the collection of Mr. Charles Robertson, and the collec- tion of the U. S. National Museum. The list contained about 450 deter- mined species. Since that time Mrs. Slosson has continued collecting during her winter visits, thus securing a number of new and interesting species, many of which were determined by the late D. W. Coquillett. The American Museum of Natural History has sent several expeditions to the State and much valuable material was obtained by Dr. Frank E. Lutz and Mr. John A.. Grossbeck. Mr. Millard C. Van Duzee in the Spring of 1908 added many interesting species and data. To Messrs. Wm. T. Davis, C. H. T. Townsend, J. Chester Bradley, C. P. Whitney and Philip Laurent I arn also indebted for a num- ber of additional species and data. In this list I have tried to give sufficient synonymy and notes so that where I have corrected the previous list the names of the two can always be correlated notwithstanding the great changes that have taken place in the nomenclature. To keep abreast of the changes which are constantly being made, I have been obliged to discard many of the genera used in Aldrich's catalogue. While I do not favor radical changes in a faunal list, it does not seem desirable to longer perpetuate names that we know will have to be changed, and the sooner these older names are adopted, the better it will be for dipterology. -

This paper is based upon material collected during a residence in St. Augustine from 1880-88 (although then not especially interested in Diptera); a visit in March, 1891, and again in Ma)', 1894; a collection made by Mrs. Annie T. Slosson during her winter visits; the collection of Mr. Chas. Robertson, of Carlinville, 111.; an interesting lot received from Mr. Frank H. Genung of St. Augustine, and the collection of the U. S. National Museum. The trip of May, 1894, was a conchological one, made in company with ' Prof. H. A. Pilsbry, through the kindness of Mr. Clarence B. Moore, Diptera being an incidental feature. The localities Welakn, Georgetown, Drayton Island, Juniper Creek, Volusia, Astor, and Tick Island are all in the vicinity of Lake George and Lake Wood- ruff. Considering the few species that have actually been recorded from Florida the following list seems a large one, but there is little doubt that this number (504) can be increased more than three times if collections were made in all sections of the State and at differ- ent seasons of the year. A number of West Indian species are here recorded from Florida for the first time as well as the most southern distribution of many northern species. A collection from the Florida T Keys would undoubtedly increase the percentage of W est Indian species, while the western part of the State would add many more species of the Mississippi Valley, Texas, and Mexico. -

STEYSKAL GROSSI; ILlI, MICHIGAN INTRODUCTION By far the greater part of the Otitidae of the Australasian re gions-which include the Oriental, the Australian, the Indo-Malayan, and the Oceanic-pertain to the subfamily Platystominae. However, a few are to be referred to the Ulidiinae. a subfamily sometimes given the rank of family as Ulitliidae, though in my experience the tlis tinctions are not sharp enough to warrant it. The Ulidiinae find their greatest development in the American tropics. They may be distinguished from other Otitidae by the fol lowing characters: (a) first longitudinal wing vein (R1+,,) bare, if with setulae (Neoeu.t:esta, Pareuxesta) the following characters are present; (b) anal cell of wing drawn out at posterior apex into a sharp point or even into a long narrow extension; (c) subcostal cell of wing (stigma) not enlarged; (d) integument largely of metallic coloration. At the time of Hendel's review of the group (Genera Insectorum, fasc. 106, 1910) only the following four species were known from the Australasian regions: Physiphora aenea, P. longicornis, Pseu deuxesta prima, Acrosticta apicalis. Some insects from beer traps in westernmost Ukraine. — The results of beer trapping from westernmost Ukraine (Uzhhorod and Mukacheve Raion) are presented. From all obtained insect taxa more attention was dedicated to selected groups: Dermaptera, Diptera (Anisopodidae, Bibionidae, Heleomyzidae, Lauxaniidae, Scatopsidae and Ulidiidae) and Mecoptera. Altogether 17 taxa were recorded. Four species, namely bibionid Dilophus bispinosus Lundström, 1913, scatopsids Scatopse notata (Linnaeus, 1758) and Apiloscatopse scutellata (Loew, 1846), and scorpion- flyPanorpa vulgaris Imhoff & Labram, 1845 represent the first records from Ukraine, and the records ofCallopistromyia annulipes Macquart, 1855 and Euxesta notata (Wiedemann, 1830) are verified. ABSTRACT WALLACE, CHARLES REID. A Molecular and Morphological Analysis of Ulidiidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea). (Under the direction of Brian M. Wiegmann). Ulidiidae (Diptera: Tephritoidea) is a relatively small family of true flies, called the “picture-winged flies” for their patterned wings. Its relationship to the other members of Tephritoidea, and its monophyly, has been well established, through both morphological and molecular analysis. Its subfamilial relationships, however, have received limited molecular analysis, having had a significant cross-section of the family’s taxa represented in only two molecular studies (Galinskaya et al. 2014, Han and Ro 2016). The most contemporary treatment of the classification of the family is by Kamenev and Korneyev (2006), according to which the Ulidiidae is divided into two subfamilies (Otitinae, Ulidiinae), each of which is further delineated into tribes (Cephaliini, Myennidini, Otitini; Lipsanini, Pterocallini, Seiopterini, Ulidiini, respectively), with an additional incertae sedis group of genera within the Otitinae. These classifications are based solely on morphological analysis, and there remain multiple outstanding questions of the placement and monophyly regarding the tribes or several large, diverse, or enigmatic genera. Here, using the next-generation sequencing method of anchored hybrid enrichment, I investigate the phylogeny of Ulidiidae with particular attention paid to the constituency and monophyly of hypothesized tribes, monophyly of the two sub-families, and placement of genera. Through maximum likelihood analysis, my results establish strong support for the separation of Ulidiidae into two monophyletic subfamilies, but challenges the assignment of Myennidini to the Ulidiidae, and potentially of Seiopterini to the Ulidiinae. It additionally suggests the paraphyly of the tribe Pterocallini with respect to both Myennidini and Lipsanini, but supports the monophyly of all other tribes. -
