STUDY GUIDE ENTOMOLOGY & NEMATOLOGY DEPARTMENT DPM COMPREHENSIVE EXAMINATIONS The Entomology & Nematology Comprehensive Examinations consist of 3 sections: pest identification (30%), pest biology and management (40%), and core concepts and synthesis (30%). These examinations are limited to information about invertebrate animal pests, principally insects and nematodes, but also plant feeding mites and terrestrial molluscs. A. Pest identification Students will be presented with insects, mites, molluscs, and nematodes that they must identify. Some may be recognizable by sight, but others may require keys for identification. Students will be provided with identification aids (keys), where necessary, and be expected to use them to identify the subjects accurately. The unknowns will be selected from the list of important insect, mite, mollusc, and nematode pests (Table 1) though we will emphasize those with a single or double asterisk [* or **]), as these normally are the more important pests. Included in this list are some that pose a threat but are not currently found in Florida. B. Pest biology and management Students will answer 8-10 questions on insect, mite, mollusc, and nematode pest biology (sampling, distribution, life cycle, damage) and management. The animals for which students are responsible to know biology and management are listed in Table 1 (preceded by double asterisk [**]). C. Core Concepts and Synthesis Section: Students will answer 3 or 4 questions that cover core areas of Entomology/Nematology and demonstrate knowledge of core areas, but also analysis and problem solving. Suggested reference/reading material is listed in Table 2. You might want to read through these in preparation for the Comprehensive Examinations. -

(Poaceae)] ears in the Americas. Four of these species are sweet corn pests in America north of Mexico: Chaetopsis massyla (Walker), Euxesta annonae (Fabricius), E. eluta Loew, and E. stigmatias Loew. Adults of these four species appear at the beginning of each season following maize-free periods, suggesting other plants act as food sources for maintenance and development of these flies. Studies were conducted in Florida, USA, to evaluate the suitability of several crop and non-crop plants commonly occurring near maize plantings as developmental hosts for these flies. Agenda MONDAY MORNING, JULY 26, 2010 PIONEER LECTURE The 2010 Florida Entomological Society Pioneer Lecture was presented by Robbie Coulter with scientific backup by Dr. Howard Frank. We were honored to have 13-year-old Robbie Coulter, accompanied by his mother, Amy Russian, as our 2010 Florida Entomological Society Pioneer Lecturer. Last year, Robbie sent a copy of his award winning entomological video from Lander, Wyoming to Howard Frank. The documentary video was about Robbie’s great, great uncle, Senekerim Dohanian, a pioneer in biological control of insect pests in the Caribbean Region, including Florida. Dr. Frank forwarded the video to members of the FES Pioneer Lecture Committee who immediately thought that Robbie and his video would make a very interesting 15th Pioneer lecture. Robbie’s 10-minute video earned him a gold medal at the 2009 National History Day. The documentary is also discussed at http://www.UncleSennie.com. National History Day makes history come alive for America's youth by engaging them in the discovery of historic, cultural and social experiences of the past. Through hands-on experiences and presentations, the students gain skills in critical thinking, problem solving, research and reading, and oral and written communication, along with increased confidence. -

Christensen et al.: Acquired Natural Enemies of Oxyops vitiosa 1 ACQUIRED NATURAL ENEMIES OF THE WEED BIOLOGICAL CONTROL AGENT OXYOPS VITIOSA (COLEPOTERA: CURCULIONIDAE) ROBIN M. CHRISTENSEN, PAUL D. PRATT, SHERYL L. COSTELLO, MIN B. RAYAMAJHI AND TED D. CENTER USDA/ARS, Invasive Plant Research Laboratory, 3225 College Ave., Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33314 ABSTRACT The Australian curculionid Oxyops vitiosa Pascoe was introduced into Florida in 1997 as a biological control agent of the invasive tree Melaleuca quinquenervia (Cav.) S. T. Blake. Pop- ulations of the weevil increased rapidly and became widely distributed throughout much of the invasive tree’s adventive distribution. In this study we ask if O. vitiosa has acquired nat- ural enemies in Florida, how these enemies circumvent the protective terpenoid laden exu- dates on larvae, and what influence 1 of the most common natural enemies has on O. vitiosa population densities? Surveys of O. vitiosa populations and rearing of field-collected individ- uals resulted in no instances of parasitoids or pathogens exploiting weevil eggs or larvae. In contrast, 44 species of predatory arthropods were commonly associated (>5 individuals when pooled across all sites and sample dates) with O. vitiosa. Eleven predatory species were ob- served feeding on O. vitiosa during timed surveys, including 6 pentatomid species, 2 formi- cids and 3 arachnids. Species with mandibulate or chelicerate mouthparts fed on adult stages whereas pentatomids, with haustellate beaks, pierced larval exoskeletons thereby by- passing the protective larval coating. Observations of predation were rare, with only 8% of timed surveys resulting in 1 or more instances of attack. Feeding by the pentatomid Podisus mucronatus Uhler accounted for 76% of all recorded predation events. -

Mined Species. Visits, Thus Securing a Number of New and Interesting

In 1895 the writer prepared a list of the Diptera of Florida,' based chiefly on material collected while living in St. Augustine, 1880-88, a collecting trip in March, 1891, and again in 1894, a collection made by Mrs. Annie Trumbull Slosson, the collection of Mr. Charles Robertson, and the collec- tion of the U. S. National Museum. The list contained about 450 deter- mined species. Since that time Mrs. Slosson has continued collecting during her winter visits, thus securing a number of new and interesting species, many of which were determined by the late D. W. Coquillett. The American Museum of Natural History has sent several expeditions to the State and much valuable material was obtained by Dr. Frank E. Lutz and Mr. John A.. Grossbeck. Mr. Millard C. Van Duzee in the Spring of 1908 added many interesting species and data. To Messrs. Wm. T. Davis, C. H. T. Townsend, J. Chester Bradley, C. P. Whitney and Philip Laurent I arn also indebted for a num- ber of additional species and data. In this list I have tried to give sufficient synonymy and notes so that where I have corrected the previous list the names of the two can always be correlated notwithstanding the great changes that have taken place in the nomenclature. To keep abreast of the changes which are constantly being made, I have been obliged to discard many of the genera used in Aldrich's catalogue. While I do not favor radical changes in a faunal list, it does not seem desirable to longer perpetuate names that we know will have to be changed, and the sooner these older names are adopted, the better it will be for dipterology. -

This paper is based upon material collected during a residence in St. Augustine from 1880-88 (although then not especially interested in Diptera); a visit in March, 1891, and again in Ma)', 1894; a collection made by Mrs. Annie T. Slosson during her winter visits; the collection of Mr. Chas. Robertson, of Carlinville, 111.; an interesting lot received from Mr. Frank H. Genung of St. Augustine, and the collection of the U. S. National Museum. The trip of May, 1894, was a conchological one, made in company with ' Prof. H. A. Pilsbry, through the kindness of Mr. Clarence B. Moore, Diptera being an incidental feature. The localities Welakn, Georgetown, Drayton Island, Juniper Creek, Volusia, Astor, and Tick Island are all in the vicinity of Lake George and Lake Wood- ruff. Considering the few species that have actually been recorded from Florida the following list seems a large one, but there is little doubt that this number (504) can be increased more than three times if collections were made in all sections of the State and at differ- ent seasons of the year. A number of West Indian species are here recorded from Florida for the first time as well as the most southern distribution of many northern species. A collection from the Florida T Keys would undoubtedly increase the percentage of W est Indian species, while the western part of the State would add many more species of the Mississippi Valley, Texas, and Mexico. -

October 1989 DIPTERA (INSECTA) OR TRUE FLIES OF THE PITCAIRN GROUP (DUCIE, HENDERSON, OENO, AND PITCAIRN ISLANDS) BY WAYNE N. MATHIS ABSTRACT An annotated checklist of the Diptera or true flies of the Pitcairn Group (southeastern Polynesia) with emphasis on the fauna of Henderson Island is presented. Although 59 species of Diptera are reported here, which is a substantial increase in the number of species that was known earlier, the fauna must still be considered depauparate. As is typical of oceanic islands of eastern Polynesia, the Pitcairn-Group fauna lacks many taxonomic groups. Most of the species apparently dispersed to the Pitcairn Group from other islands to the west and north, primarily within Polynesia. Only five species are apparently endemic to the Pitcairn better sampling, even these may be found elsewhere. Two species, an otitld and a calliphorid, were known previously only from the neotropics. Remote and exotic, the islands of the Pitcairn Croup are poorly known, especially their natural history. Our meager knowledge of them is due largely to their remoteness, which, ironically, now makes t em inviting to study because their fauna and flora are relatively undisturbed. Only Pitcairn, of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, has been inhabited in recent times, and of the four islands comprising the Group, it alone bears the lasting imprint of human disturbance. The Pitcairn Group lies in the South Pacific along the southern boundry of Polynesia between 23-25" south latitude and 124- 13 lo west longitude. -

STEYSKAL GROSSI; ILlI, MICHIGAN INTRODUCTION By far the greater part of the Otitidae of the Australasian re gions-which include the Oriental, the Australian, the Indo-Malayan, and the Oceanic-pertain to the subfamily Platystominae. However, a few are to be referred to the Ulidiinae. a subfamily sometimes given the rank of family as Ulitliidae, though in my experience the tlis tinctions are not sharp enough to warrant it. The Ulidiinae find their greatest development in the American tropics. They may be distinguished from other Otitidae by the fol lowing characters: (a) first longitudinal wing vein (R1+,,) bare, if with setulae (Neoeu.t:esta, Pareuxesta) the following characters are present; (b) anal cell of wing drawn out at posterior apex into a sharp point or even into a long narrow extension; (c) subcostal cell of wing (stigma) not enlarged; (d) integument largely of metallic coloration. At the time of Hendel's review of the group (Genera Insectorum, fasc. 106, 1910) only the following four species were known from the Australasian regions: Physiphora aenea, P. longicornis, Pseu deuxesta prima, Acrosticta apicalis.
