Buth, Chair Several species of fishes have been introduced into the Santa Clara River system in southern California, including Catostomus santaanae (Santa Ana sucker), Catostomus fumeiventris (Owens sucker), Gila orcutti (arroyo chub), and Pimephales promelas (fathead minnow). These species are known to inhabit similar ecological niches but little is known about their associated parasite fauna. Two C. fumeiventris, 35 C. santaanae, 63 hybrid catostomids, 214 G. orcutti, and 18 P. promelas were collected and necropsied in the summers of 2017 and 2018. Nine macroparasite taxa were harvested including seven native, and two nonnative parasites Schyzocotyle acheilognathi (Asian fish tapeworm) and Lernaea cyprinacea (anchor worm). Prevalence and intensity of parasites were not related to the genetic history of these catostomids. This is the first host-association record for G. orcutti with Gyrodactylus sp., S. acheilognathi, ii diplostomid metacercariae, Rhabdochona sp, Contracaecum sp., and larval acuariid cysts and for P. -

The intent of the INRMP is to implement an ecosystem-based conservation program that provides for conservation and enhancement of natural resources in a manner that is consistent with the military mission, that integrates and coordinates all natural resources management activities, that provides for sustainable multipurpose uses of natural resources, and that provides public access for the use of natural resources subject to safety and military security considerations. The EA considers two management alternatives: the Proposed Action and No Action Alternative. Because the No Action Alternative does not fulfill statutory requirements under the SAIA for ecosystem-based, long-term natural resource planning, the No Action Alternative was rejected. -

Soda Springs lies in the traditional range of the Chemehuevi, who likely used and modified the area in pursuit of their hunter–gatherer econo- my.Trade routes existed between the coast and inland to the Colorado River and beyond for almost as long as humans have occupied this continent. These routes depended on reliable springs, spaced no more than a few days’ walk apart, and Soda Springs has long been a reliable oasis in a dehydrated expanse. The first written record of Soda Springs Soda Springs, dubbed “Hancock’s Redoubt” comes from the journals of Jedediah Strong for Winfield Scott Hancock, the Army Smith, written in 1827 when he crossed Soda Quartermaster in Los Angeles at the time. DAVIS California Department of Fish and Game 7329 Silverado Trail Yountville, California 94558 The freshwater fishes of California include 67 native resident or anadromous species, 53 non-native species, and 5 marine species that occur in fresh water, for a total of 125 species. Within these species, 100 taxa at lower levels (subspecies, Evolutionary Significant Units, runs of anadromous fish) are recognized. The number of freshwater fish species in California is increasing due to invasions of non-native fishes, which are becoming established at a rate of about 1 species every 3 years. Of the native fishes, 5 full species are extinct in California. Thus, the actual number of species maintaining populations in the state is 120. Of extant native species, 15 (22%) are threatened with extinction in the near future. Only 27 native species (40%) can be regarded as having secure populations. INTRODUCTION The fishes of California’s inland waters are a mixture of resident, anadromous, and euryhaline species, both native and non-native. The first attempt to compile a comprehensive list of these species was Evermann and Clark (1931), who listed 78 native species and 32 introduced species. Native species included an anomalous Pacific hagfish, Epatretus stouti, from the Eel River, 14 forms all now considered to be rainbow trout, and 18 other forms that are either no longer recognized as species or were mistakenly considered to be part of the California fish fauna. -

E-mail: [email protected]; [email protected] Abstract The California Roach (Hesperoleucus symmetricus) and Hitch (Lavinia exilicauda) form a species complex largely en- demic to California (CA), USA. Using previous studies of this complex along with a recent comprehensive genomic anal- ysis, we developed a highly supported taxonomic hierarchy of two genera, five species, four subspecies and multiple distinct population segments within two presently recognized species. The genera Lavinia and Hesperoleucus are support- ed as representing distinct lineages, despite occasional hybridization between them. While hybridization is one pathway to some speciation in this complex, hierarchical levels correlate nicely between genomic results and earlier morphological work. Hesperoleucus symmetricus is newly divided into four species (H. parvipinnis—Gualala Roach, H. mitrulus— Northern Roach, H. venustus—Coastal Roach, and H. -

Department of Animal Science, The University of California, Davis, CA 95616 ABSTRACT MATERIALS AND METHODS Using 12 microsatellite DNA loci, we characterized genetic structure Fifty individual samples were collected in 2005 from each of five locations: Camp Cady (CC), China Lake (CL), Lake of four populations of Mohave tui chub, and examined the Tuendae (LT), MC Spring (MC), and Afton Canyon (AC), San Bernardino County, California (see map in Fig. 1, and sites taxonomic status of the introduced cyprinid fish common in the in Fig. 2). Fish were captured with minnow traps. Noninvasive genetic specimens were sampled and all fish were Mojave River today. We found only unhybridized Mohave tui chubs released at the point of capture. ARROYO CHUB Gila orcutti (Eigenmann and Eigenmann) Status: High Concern. The arroyo chub is vulnerable to extinction in its native range in the next 100 years. However, populations exist outside the native range and are regarded as generally more secure (e.g., those in the Santa Clara and Ventura River basins) (J. O’Brien, CDFW, pers. comm. 2013). Description: Arroyo chubs are relatively small fish. Adults can reach lengths of 120 mm SL but are typically 70-100 mm long. They are sexually dimorphic. Males have larger fins than females and develop tubercles on the upper surface of the pectoral fins during breeding (Tres 1992). Both males and females have thick bodies, large eyes, and small mouths. Pharyngeal teeth arrangement can vary but is generally closely spaced with a formula of 2,5-4,2. Fin ray counts are 7 and 8 for anal and dorsal fins, respectively. Gill rakers number from 5 to 9. The lateral line is straight and complete, with 48-62 scales extending to the caudal peduncle. Their body color varies from silver or grey to olive-green on the dorsum, white ventrum, and a dull grey lateral band (Moyle 2002). Larvae and juveniles from the Los Angeles and Santa Ana River drainages are described in Feeney and Swift (2008). Taxonomic Relationships: Arroyo chub are morphologically and genetically very distinct, reflecting their long evolutionary isolation (Miller 1945a). Both Gila orcutti and Yaqui chub (G. purpurea) belong to the subgenus Temeculina (Miller 1945a). Both species are part of a group of related Gila species in the American southwest (Simons and Mayden 1998). -

Locust Street, Ontario, CA 91761 [email protected]; 951-827-3918 ABSTRACT: The construction of multipurpose constructed treatment wetlands for treating municipal wastewater, and providing much needed habitat for riparian and wetland species, has increased over the last few decades. The production of mosquitoes which can transmit pathogens of humans and companion animals is a potential drawback to utilizing these treatment wetlands. We evaluated the efficacy of the arroyo chub, Gila orcutti, as a biological control agent for larval mosquitoes in the Prado Wetlands, Riverside County, CA. The arroyo chub is native to southern California watersheds and has been designated by the California Dept. of Fish and Wildlife as a Threatened Species within its native range. Local vector control districts are in need of an alternative to stocking the invasive western mosquitofish, Gambusia affinis, for larval mosquito control in sensitive watersheds. Twelve enclosures were installed in the wetland and three stocking treatments used: control, 0 kg/ha (No fish); low stocking density, 1.5 kg/ha (2 fish); and high stocking density, 6 kg/ha (8 fish). Our results indicate that arroyo chubs did not adversely affect the diversity or abundance of macroinvertebrate and microinvertebrate taxa collected in the wetland over the course of the 5-week trial.
