The longfin smelt is listed as a threatened species by the California Fish and Game Commission. Abundance of the longfin smelt has reached record lows in the San Francisco-Delta population, and the species may already be extinct in some northern California estuarine populations, resulting in an overall threat of extinction to the species within California (Federal Register 2008). The longfin smelt was also proposed for federal listing, but on April 8, 2009 the USFWS determined that the San Francisco Bay Estuary population does not qualify for listing as a distinct population segment under federal regulations. Further assessment of the entire population is being conducted, however, and future listing may be considered. Photo courtesy of California Department of Fish and Game Longfin smelt, once mature, are slim, silver fish in the family Osmeridae (true smelts). Moyle (2002) describes the species as being 90-110 mm (standard length) at maturity, with a translucent silver appearance along the sides of the body, and an olive to iridescent pinkish hue on the back. Mature males are often darker than females, with enlarged and stiffened dorsal and anal fins, a dilated lateral line region, and breeding tubercles on paired fins and scares. Longfin smelt can be distinguished from other California smelt by their long pectoral fins (which reach or nearly reach the bases of the pelvic fins), incomplete lateral line, weak or absent striations on the opercular bones, low number of scales in the lateral line (54-65) and long maxillary bones (which in adults extent just short of the posterior margin of the eye). -

California’s freshwater fishes: status and management Rebecca M. Quiñones* and Peter B. Moyle Center for Watershed Sciences, University of California at Davis, One Shields Ave, Davis, 95616, USA * correspondence to [email protected] SUMMARY Fishes in Mediterranean climates are adapted to thrive in streams with dy- namic environmental conditions such as strong seasonality in flows. Howev- er, anthropogenic threats to species viability, in combination with climate change, can alter habitats beyond native species’ environmental tolerances and may result in extirpation. Although the effects of a Mediterranean cli- mate on aquatic habitats in California have resulted in a diverse fish fauna, freshwater fishes are significantly threatened by alien species invasions, the presence of dams, and water withdrawals associated with agricultural and urban use. A long history of habitat degradation and dependence of salmonid taxa on hatchery supplementation are also contributing to the decline of fish- es in the state. These threats are exacerbated by climate change, which is also reducing suitable habitats through increases in temperatures and chang- es to flow regimes. Approximately 80% of freshwater fishes are now facing extinction in the next 100 years, unless current trends are reversed by active conservation. Here, we review threats to California freshwater fishes and update a five-tiered approach to preserve aquatic biodiversity in California, with emphasis on fish species diversity. Central to the approach are man- agement actions that address conservation at different scales, from single taxon and species assemblages to Aquatic Diversity Management Areas, wa- tersheds, and bioregions. SUISANZOSHOKU 51(3), 295-306 (2003) Morphological Development of Embryos and Juveniles in the Mozambique Tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus as a Direct Developmental Fish under Rearing Conditions Katsunori TACHIHARA*1,2 and Emi OBARA*1 (Accepted June 17, 2003) Abstract: The Mozambique tilapia, Oreochromis mossambicus is one of the species introduced to Okinawa Island. This species breeds widely in the rivers of the island. In order to understand the biological aspects of O. mossambicus under the natural conditions of the island, a detailed observa- tion of early morphological development was done under rearing conditions. The development of O . mossambicus was studied; it consisted of an embryonic phase of approximately 88 hours and 30 minutes, a free embryonic phase of about 12 days, followed by the juvenile period. The embryo became free-swimming on the sixth day of the free embryonic phase. The osteological develop- ment using enzyme-cleared specimens indicated that after reaching the juvenile stage, develop- ment of almost basic bones was complete 25 days after hatching. GENERAL INFORMATION Purpose of 5-Year Reviews: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) is required by section 4(c)(2) of the Endangered Species Act (Act) to conduct a status review of each listed species at least once every 5 years. The purpose of a 5-year review is to evaluate whether or not the species’ status has changed since it was listed. Based on the 5-year review, we recommend whether the species should be removed from the list of endangered and threatened species, be changed in status from endangered to threatened, or be changed in status from threatened to endangered. Our original listing of a species as endangered or threatened is based on the existence of threats attributable to one or more of the five threat factors described in section 4(a)(1) of the Act, and we must consider these same five factors in any subsequent consideration of reclassification or delisting of a species. In the 5-year review, we consider the best available scientific and commercial data on the species, and focus on new information available since the species was listed or last reviewed. If we recommend a change in listing status based on the results of the 5-year review, we must propose to do so through a separate rule-making process defined in the Act that includes public review and comment. -

Oreochromis mossambicus is a medium sized, laterally compressed fish that has long dorsal fins with 10-13 rays and spines (Froese & Pauly 2007). Its scales are large along the snout and fore head and become smaller along the body (Luna 2012). The coloration is a dull greenish yellow with weak banding pattern along the body (Froese & Pauly 2007). The adults range in size from 25 cm in the female to approximately 35 cm in the male. The male has an average weight of 2.5 pounds and the female ranges from 1.8-2 pounds at its maximum weight (Froese & Pauly 2007). O. mossambicus exhibits sexual dimorphism, the best descriptors are the premaxilla width, anal fin height and snout length; traits vital for agonistic displays, nesting and fighting (Oliveira & Almeda 1995). The size and coloration vary in captivity and with its diet. Some O. mossambicus look almost black in colour; females, non-breeding males and fry/ juveniles have a silvery colour on the scales (Luna 2012). O. mossambicus can live in both brackish and salt water and can survive a wide range of temperatures (Froese & Pauly 2007), and can live up to 11 years (Luna 2012). FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. A recently excavated site, CA-SAC-47, provides direct evidence of subsistence strategies in the form of faunal and plant remains. This faunal assemblage is compared to direct evidence of subsistence from Delta sites SAC-42, SAC-43, SAC-65, SAC-145, and SAC-329.
