Moore-Emmett opens Janice story by explaining that Janice came from a long line of women with self-destructive addictions to abusive relationships; “Janice’s personal choices in life were different in that her addictions were religious.”340 In presenting Janice’s story in this way, Moore-Emmett removes Janice as an active agent in her religious choices. She faced “addiction,” a disease that caused her to affiliate with unsavory religious characters. Moore-Emmett’s introduction of Janice cuts off the possibility of Janice being anything other than a victim due to her hereditary addictive tendencies; Moore-Emmett thereby ensures that Janice’s story fits her model of captivity to religious dogma, rather than reasoned religious belief.     The Trial of the French Mission Kahlile Mehr SHORT, SOLID, BULL-NECKED ELDER WILLIAM TUCKER, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, would grip your hand firmly and ask earnestly, "How are you, Brother?" (Harvey, April 1986) Elder Loftin Harvey, Jr., several months senior to Tucker in the mission, at first thought this new acquaintance was simply odd. Later, he, along with many others, would come to respect and admire Tucker, and finally their paths would be drawn together before a Church tribunal in which the course of Harvey's life would forever be altered. To mission leaders and missionaries alike, Elder Tucker had the qualities of an ideal leader for proselyting. In September 1957 Harold W. Lee, Tucker's first mission president, pointed him out to another newly arrived missionary, Marlene Wessel, and said, "If you want to be a good missionary and baptize, watch Elder Tucker" (Owens 1986). Frank Willardsen, a fellow missionary, remembers his piercing eyes and aura of charisma (June 1986). In person, he was quiet, soft-spoken, gentle, and confident (Norton 1979, 2; Harvey, April 1986). In public, he was dynamic and forceful. He was well-read in Church doctrine and engaged in missionary work with a gusto that caught the attention of the whole mission. Early in 1958 Tucker became the second counselor in the French Mission presidency, and, in the absence of a first counselor, the only assistant to Mission President Milton Christensen. Tucker traveled in the mission frequently, con- ducting study classes with missionary elders, preaching over the pulpit to the French members, and performing the diurnal labors of tracting and contacting with individual missionaries.

In a statement issued within hours of the Supreme Court‟s affirmative rulings on June 26, 2013, a Church spokesperson criticized the judicial system, and reaffirmed the LDS Church‟s commitment “to strengthening traditional marriage between a man and a woman.” As Hawaii is poised to consider a marriage equality bill, the LDS Church, which has a large presence in Hawaii, has again entered the fight on the same-sex marriage issue. In a letter dated September 15, 2013, LDS leaders across the state are encouraging Hawaiian Mormons to study the proposed legislation, and then as private citizens contact their elected representatives in the Hawaii legislature to express their views. The letter tells Church members to review Church publications on the topic, including “The Family: A Proclamation to the World,” a document that endorses one man/one woman as the ideal for marriage: http://www.mormonnewsroom.org/article/proclamation-on-the-family . While the public face of the LDS Church opposes same-sex unions and proclaims marriage between one man and one woman, inside costly Mormon temples—and well away from public scrutiny—the private face of the LDS Church backs polygamy to the hilt with ceremonial gusto. Along with the heavy volume of monogamous, male-female marriage rites for the living and the dead, polygamous rites by proxy—for both deceased men and women, but mainly for men—are routinely executed in Mormon temples.

    Claude Bronson: Jean, in your own words, will you give us an account of your meeting of Owen LeBaron and your marriage to him, and your life with him? And as much information as you can give of the LeBaron oeople in Mexico? Jean Bronson: Yes. I met him in the middle of the summer of 1945 and (I) ran away. My folks didn't know I was with him, and we went to Canada. We were up there until January and during this time, the authorities there learned that I was his plural wife and (they) began to get "rough" on us, so we left and came back to the States, planning to go on tc Mexico. We went into Southern Utah and met Cleve LeBaron there. He asked us to go into Mexico with him and help him on his place. That was the snring and summer of '46. We were there for a couple of months, it was in June, when we met Ben. He talked with Owen for a few weeks, then Owen informed us that he believed in Ben's beliefs and that he was going to follow him. Then we moved down onto the Parceles that Ben and Alma LeBaron had gotten. After we moved there, Owen strictly informed us that we were not to interfere, we were not to put our noses into any of the mens' business and when they were talking, we were to be quiet and if possible, stay right out of it, not to have any noise or anything else.
