fter a month or two of a bit of a dry spell, we have received We are now entering the dry season and we can catch up with some much-appreciated autumn rain. The gardens and golf maintenance of areas that usually have to wait until we have time. We course are looking beautiful and Norman of the Matco Group can fi nally get down to the pruning of trees and changing some garden says we should give them some time – about six months areas now that time allows. A– until the new growing season and our greens will also be beautiful again. They are hand-stitching them, meaning they are going around the greens and fi xing the damaged areas.

Norman and Nicky have enlisted the help of the guys from the Golf Academy during this process. I know the damage suff ered is not something we would wish upon our golf course ever again, but the academy guys are learning a process that no other group of students have ever learned before – what a bonus for the golf courses they are going to tend to once they leave the Academy!

As you all know, the construction of the new Halfway House will also commence in May. We are busy preparing the plans for the tender process and will allocate them to a contractor at beginning of May to start with construction as soon as the Council has approved our plans. These plans were lodged a while ago and we hope approval is imminent. If you recall from the AGM and previous articles, the halfway house will be located where the umbrellas are now, next to the ramp leading to the upper level of the Club. We will use the swimming pool area as construction site and hope to inconvenience our residents and visitors as little as possible with the building project. We will have a pathway through the construction site for golf carts to access the Club and the tennis courts. Please be patient with us; we are nearly there. This will conclude all construction at the Clubhouse. On that note, thank you to all who voted in the upgrade of the workshop area! I will personally try and make the upgrade worth our while so that it will be a facility we can be proud of and that lives up to the standards we would like for all our workers on the Estate. We will be redesigning the internal layout as well as creating a better fl ow of work throughout the whole area. The area for the workers will be upgraded to include a space where they can be briefed in the mornings as well as where training sessions can be held. As much as I have enjoyed all my projects on the Estate, this is one I am looking forward to seeing concluded. This project has brought me much joy. Thanks again to all involved.

As you‘re aware, one of our social events through that brings our Estate much publicity in the running world, the Race of Faith, is coming up in June. The race has been renamed, as requested by the Board, The Silver Lakes Race of Faith. We will be asking for volunteers again and hope you will all enjoy the event with us. Last year we had many compliments on the Silver Lakes part of the race and everybody enjoyed running through our beautiful Estate.

I have said many things in the past regarding the look and feel of the Estate, and as you will remember, our focus has been clearing up the Estate. So, what does this mean for design, look and feel? It all comes back to something we all know – cleaning house. If you walk into your home and the kids have been playing, or after a weekend of staying at home, the house is untidy – and in my opinion not very welcoming! Or when your study becomes very cluttered – it feels as if one has no control. The same goes for larger spaces like our Estate.

If we leave some areas untidy or start projects and don’t fi nish them, the Estate sends out an unkempt message, without us knowing what exactly is wrong – we can just ‘feel’ it. That is the reason I have been hammering on the issues of keeping our Estate tidy, of uniform designs, simplifi cation, removing objects and structures that have no meaning and are not part of the overall design. This is where our entrance gates and sidewalks come in. These are the fi rst elements of the Estate that any visitor sees. Our entrance gates must be friendly and inviting. The experience must leave our visitors wanting to come back. It is important to have friendly security staff (which we defi nitely have), a thorough but easy access system and beautiful gates. Since we are between other estates and do not have the luxury of space some of the other estates have, we must keep our gates simple and clutter-free. Another important thing we can do to make our Estate more appealing is to hide elements such as generators and other ‘non-essential’ aesthetic elements.

The same goes for our boulevards – the reason we had such an Just a bit of a look-and-feel question – would you sit inside a extensive replanting programme – as well as our sidewalks. circular wall or on the outside of the curving wall? Would you rather We have beautiful houses with beautiful front gardens in the sit in an untidy, messed up room or a tidy, comfortable room? Or Estate. These enhance curb appeal but I would still like to ask all our would you rather be inside a designer room with lots of design homeowners to stand in front of your houses and ask yourselves: elements, such as cold surfaces like marble and glass? Think about “Am I proud of my front garden and side walk? What story does the these and I will discuss some design principles in my next article. front of my house tell other people?” We need to make sure that our front of house is welcoming and neat. I trust you had a wonderful Easter break and that you and your loved ones arrived home safely if you went away. I hope to see Perhaps I am over-emphasising the importance of untidy you all at our Mother’s Day lunch and that you will all sign up in sidewalks, but it is very important that the look and feel of an area droves to either run the Silver Lakes Race of Faith or help with the refl ects not only the value of properties, but also the reality of marshalling! people actually wanting to live there, wanting to come back.
