www.pretoria-south-africa.com Let your friends and family claim theirs from the website for FREE. www.pretoria-south-africa.com FROM EDITOR’S DESK I just love retail therapy. I love shopping for almost anything. Food, accessories, cosmetics, toys, gifts, etc. A little bit of exercise that I get is mainly from shopping. My family gets puzzled when I get overly excited by spotting a new mall or shopping complex. I also tend to go from mall to mall because I love Stuttafords in Woodlands, Game in Menlyn, beauty Spa in Moreleta, sea food in Hatfield, coffee in Eastwood (Arcadia), nightlife in Fashion TV (Brooklyn), Bookshop in Kolonade (Montana), My doctor’s rooms in Barclay Square (Sunnyside), occasional trips to Waverly Plaza, for Indian food which got replaced by Hazeldean. My heart broke when I noticed that they opened “the Groove Shopping Mall” in Lynwood Road, close to where I lived in Pretoria East. It’s cool enough to make any cool girl go bananas. A word of warning: You have to afford it. If you are not strong enough, leave your credit card at home and carry cash. There is no habit as bad as accumulating debt. SHOO, Now that I managed to get that warning note out of the way, I can get back to the exciting stuff, the shopping spree mood. Save this eBook in your desktop. Whenever you feel a need to explore a new mall, open your shopping guide and go have a cup of coffee in an unfamiliar setting. How exciting is that. Even better, go alone or take a good friend. We will update this guide as often as we can. Printing it is not ideal as we will be adding new information often. Check our website for other shopping, dining and entertainment ideas. PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU KNOW OF A SHOPPING CENTRE NOT LISTED HERE. WHILST WE DO OUR BEST TO LIST ALL MALLS AND SHOPPING CENTRES IN AND AROUND PRETORIA, WE MIGHT

A FOREIGN COUNTRY: GROWING UP IN RHODESIA Nigel Suckling Draft: © January 2021 1 I – MUNALI – 5 II – LIVINGSTONE – 43 III – PARALLEL LIVES – 126 IV – LUSAKA – 212 V – GOING HOME – 244 APPENDIX – 268 2 FOREWORD As a child you have no measure of how fast the world around you is changing. Because you’re developing so quickly yourself, you assume your environment is static and will carry on pretty much the same as you grow into it. This is true for everyone everywhere, naturally. Most old people can, if suitably primed, talk indefinitely about the changes they’ve seen in their lifetimes, even if they’ve never moved from the place where they were born; but some environments change more drastically than others, even without a war to spur things along. One such was Northern Rhodesia in southern Africa in the 1950s and 60s. As white kids growing up then we had no way of knowing, as our parents almost certainly did, just how fragile and transient our conditions were – how soon and how thoroughly the country would become Zambia, with a completely different social order and set of faces in command. The country of course is still there. In many ways its urban centres now look remarkably unchanged due to relative poverty. The houses we grew up in, many of the streets, landmark buildings and landscapes we were familiar with are still recognizably the same, much more so in fact than in many parts of Europe. What has vanished is the web of British colonial superstructure into which I and my siblings were born as privileged members, brief gentry on the cusp of a perfectly justified and largely peaceful revolution that was soon to brush us aside.

  • Public Participation in Lower and Higher Socio-Economic Areas in South Africa
AS Lindeque & CE Cloete Public participation in lower and higher socio-economic areas in South Africa Peer reviewed Abstract A prominent feature of public life in South Africa the last decade has been an increasing demand for more participation in the formulation and making of decisions affecting the public’s quality of life. This demand has also become a focus of political activism. Public participation in plan formulation and in decision making has to be seen as a reality, and not as an optional extra. It can be argued that unless plan formulation and decision making take cogni sance of different political traditions and cultures and are inclusive and parti cipatory it has little chance of producing long lasting solutions. The aim of this research is to compare the public participation process in a lower socio economic area with that in a higher socio economic area to de termine if the process and focus of the public participation process differ in accordance with the socio economic status of an area. The study compares the public participation process in two case studies: the Mabopane and Muckleneuk areas in Pretoria, with specific reference to the Mabopane Inter modal Facility Redevelopment Project and the Gautrain Rapid Rail Project going through the Muckleneuk neighbourhood, respectively. Findings indicate that the driving force for participation in the higher socio economic areas is based on the effect that the proposed development plan ning would have on the area as a whole, whereas the focus of public partici pation process in the area with a lower socio economic status tends to be on the influence on job creation and the impact it has on the affected individual.
