Pak Assistant Professor Bekisizwe Ndimande ABSTRACT This dissertation examines African student non-return within the larger historical pursuit of higher education in the United States by African students. Non-return by African students as addressed in this study is a process more than two centuries old extending directly across four defined phases of African student migrations. Key primary documents including the autobiographies of African students, correspondence between African students and other primary agents of African student migrations as well as oral interviews from African students turned permanent settlers from the fourth phase of African student migrations to the United States, are utilized in this dissertation. The perspectives of the non-returning African student in this dissertation address three important areas central to analyzing non-return; first, the factors that shaped the choices of non-returning African students to study in the United States; second, the social and cultural experiences encountered as a part of their educational migrations; and last, the decision to non-return. Non-return as articulated through interviews in this dissertation and supported by other primary and secondary source documentation is identified as a fluid process constantly shifting in response to internal and external pressures as well as historical and contemporary forces. -

Levy, ―Foreward‖ to The Theory and Practice of History by Leopold von Ranke It is obvious to every unprejudiced observer—and even to many prejudiced ones1—that the legacy of racial slavery persists on many levels. A growing movement in the United States and elsewhere is calling for reparations to compensate the descendants of slaves for the economic and other damages inflicted upon them by slavery. A wide range of studies has linked the continuing disparity in levels of health, economic well- being, and educational attainments between Americans of African ancestry and other Americans to factors originating in slavery, though whether the factor of enslavement is causative of the problem or secondary—i.e. -

About the Author for THE SCARLET LETTER Nathaniel Hawthorne Growing up Born July 4, 1804, Nathaniel Hathorne was the only son of Captain Nathaniel Hathorne and Elizabeth Clarke Manning Hathorne. (Hawthorne added the “w” to his name after he graduated from college.) Following the death of Captain Hathorne in 1808, Nathaniel, his mother, and his two sisters were forced to move in with Mrs. Hathorne’s relatives, the Mannings. Here Nathaniel Hawthorn grew up in the company of women without a strong male role model; this environment may account for what biographers call his shyness and introverted personality. This period of Hawthorne’s life was mixed with the joys of reading and the resentment of financial dependence. While he studied at an early age with Joseph E. Worcester, a well-known lexicographer, he was not particularly fond of school. An injury allowed him to stay home for a year when he was nine, and his early “friends” were books by Shakespeare, Spenser, Bunyan, and 18th century novelists. During this time Mrs. Hathorne moved her family to land owned by the Mannings near Raymond, Maine. Nathaniel’s fondest memories of these days were when “I ran quite wild, and would, I doubt not, have willingly run wild till this time, fishing all day long, or shooting with an old fowling piece.” This idyllic life in the wilderness exerted its charm on the boy’s imagination but ended in 1819 when he returned to Salem to prepare for two years for college entrance. Education In 1821, Hawthorne entered Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. -

This study examines the role of free blacks, escaping slaves, and white Protestant evangelicals influenced by tenants of Kentucky’s Second Great Awakening who were inspired, directly or indirectly, to aid in African American community building. -

Warner, CLO Online Administrator BISHOP EDWARD WATERS By Robert Thomas Matthews, III Director of Public Relations – Sixth Episcopal District Lay Organization, AMEC Historiographer of the West Atlanta District Lay Organization, AMEC Bishop Edward Waters was born, a slave, on March 15, 1780 at West River, MD. At an early age, he came to Baltimore and joined the A. M. E. Church. He was subsequently ordained Deacon and Elder after which he served in the Baltimore area. Waters was elected and consecrated as the Third Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church on May 8, 1836 during the Fifth Quadrennial Session of the General Conference--not including the Organizing Convention of 1816, which was also held in Philadelphia, PA. However, among the unusual historical biographic annals and documents, we find a most unusual entry concerning Bishop Edward Waters, the Third, elected and consecrated Bishop of African Methodist Episcopal Church. Although our school of higher education in Florida bears his name, Bishop Water’s legacy and history following his election and consecration to the bishopric, as reported by Bishop Daniel Alexander Payne (6th Bishop), bears this note: “The same year of his election, Bishop Brown took him with him, to all the Conferences except the Western Conference, thus giving him some idea of the field of labor. -

VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES September 15th – 17th, 2013 Repatriation and Reparations FORMAL GREETINGS & INTRODUCTION: The Ethio-Africa Diaspora Union Millennium Council aka The Rastafari Millennium Council (RMC) emphatically welcomes the decision by the Caribbean Communities – CARICOM, Heads of State to pursue the agenda on Reparations through the initiation by its future Chairman – Prime Minister Ralph E. Gonsalves in accordance with the declaration at the United Nations World Conference Against Racism (UN’WCAR) held in Durban, South Africa 2001. We are equally pleased that 168 Nations had ratified the Durban Declarations and have set about establishing National Reparation Committees. From as early as the 18th Century there was always an advocate for the repatriation of African slaves to their ancestral land. The immigration of African-American, Caribbean, and Black British slaves to Africa occurred mainly during the late 18th century to mid 19th century. In the cases of Liberia and Sierra Leone both were established by former slaves who were repatriated to Africa within a 28 year period. The repatriation of African American slaves and freed persons to Africa was first advocated by the American Colonization Society (ACS), founded in 1816 by Charles Fenton Mercer, of which Thomas Buchanan (brother to future president James Buchanan) was a member. This soon developed into the Back-to-Africa Movement also known as the Colonization Movement. Other notable members of the ACS includes Thomas Jefferson, James Monroe, Abraham Lincoln, James Madison, Daniel Webster, John Marshall, and Francis Scott Key. -
