HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora. -

The exhibition extends through September 30. “Ruth Weisberg: Reflections Through Time” expands upon the recent Weisberg exhibition at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, presented on the occasion of receiving the prestigious 2015 Printmaker Emeritus Award from the Southern Graphics Council, the largest international body of “Waterbourne,” 1973, Lithograph, 30 1/4 x 42 1/4 Inches printmakers in North America. (The SGC’s previous awardee, in 2014, was Wayne Thiebaud.) Included in “Reflections Through Time” are selected works, such as Weisberg’s iconic “Waterbourne” (1973). Here the artist joins both symbolic and literal reflections of light, and in this case, a personal passage of impending motherhood and the emergence of woman. Other works in the exhibition, including her most recent work “Harbor” (2015), engage reflections on personal history and of the convergence of art history and cultural experience. “Reflections Through Time” reveals Weisberg’s decades-long interest in re-imagining the works of past masters such as Velazquez, Watteau, Blake, Titian, Veronese, Cagnacci, Corot, and Giacometti. -

Hip Hop Club Songs Did you Know? The credit of coining the term 'Hip-Hop' lies with Keith 'Cowboy' Wiggins, a member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Around 1978, he used to tease his friend who was in the US Army by singing hip/hop/hip/hop. He was mimicking the cadence rhythm of the soldiers. Hip hop dance has taken many forms throughout its four decades ofexistence. This research shows that regardless ofthe form there are three prominent characteristics: performance, personal style, and competition. Although it is possible to isolate the study ofeach ofthese characteristics, they are inseparable when defining hip hop dance. There are several genre-specific performance formats in which hip hop dance is experienced. Personal style includes the individuality and creativity that is celebrated in the hip hop dancer. ISSN 2453-8035 Abstract: This paper focuses on cyclical time in modern rap lyrics in comparison with the archaic time of fairy tales. The study is the first attempt to prove the existence of archaic time in a metamodernistic genre. Narrative and stylistic analyses coupled with intertextual and archetypal analyses have revealed the symbolic, narrative, and stylistic devices foregrounding cyclical time with an emphasis on its shared and different manifestations in the genres being compared. Key words: cyclical time, rap lyrics, fairy tale, narrative devices, stylistic devices. 1. Introduction The notion of cyclical time remains unexplored in linguistic and interdisciplinary studies; there exist only a few works, which dwell on archaic consciousness and its reflection in ancient literary sources. However, considering that some mechanisms of archaic thinking, such as symbolization, ritualization, magic, mythologization, and anthropomorphization, are generally inherent in humans (Першин 2013) and embodied in the "ineradicable" archetypes of human behavior (Jung 1969); the study 75 ISSN 2453-8035 of those temporal features of modern texts that specifically reinterpret archaic time can be considered a new and promising aspect of research.
