HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Maxwell Lewis Williams August 2020 © 2020 Maxwell Lewis Williams HIPNESS, HYBRIDITY, AND “NEO-BOHEMIAN” HIP-HOP: RETHINKING EXISTENCE IN THE AFRICAN DIASPORA Maxwell Lewis Williams Cornell University 2020 This dissertation theorizes a contemporary hip-hop genre that I call “neo-bohemian,” typified by rapper Kendrick Lamar and his collective, Black Hippy. I argue that, by reclaiming the origins of hipness as a set of hybridizing Black cultural responses to the experience of modernity, neo- bohemian rappers imagine and live out liberating ways of being beyond the West’s objectification and dehumanization of Blackness. In turn, I situate neo-bohemian hip-hop within a history of Black musical expression in the United States, Senegal, Mali, and South Africa to locate an “aesthetics of existence” in the African diaspora. By centering this aesthetics as a unifying component of these musical practices, I challenge top-down models of essential diasporic interconnection. Instead, I present diaspora as emerging primarily through comparable responses to experiences of paradigmatic racial violence, through which to imagine radical alternatives to our anti-Black global society. Overall, by rethinking the heuristic value of hipness as a musical and lived Black aesthetic, the project develops an innovative method for connecting the aesthetic and the social in music studies and Black studies, while offering original historical and musicological insights into Black metaphysics and studies of the African diaspora. -

Hip Hop Club Songs Did you Know? The credit of coining the term 'Hip-Hop' lies with Keith 'Cowboy' Wiggins, a member of Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. Around 1978, he used to tease his friend who was in the US Army by singing hip/hop/hip/hop. He was mimicking the cadence rhythm of the soldiers. Initially known as Disco Rap, hip-hop music is a stylized download mp3 rocket pro free 2010 rhythmic music form which contains rapping and beat boxing as its elements. This music developed as a part of the 'hip-hop culture' in New York, particularly among the African-Americans. Today, hip hop music has become extremely popular among the masses. Artists like Snoop Dog, Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Black- Eyed Peas have popularized this particular genre even further. Certain artists, who were known for performing other genres also started experimenting with rap and hip-hop. Couple of such examples would be Beyonce and none other than the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. Another factor that has added to hip-hop's popularity is that this music is ideal for nightclubs and dance floors. To me, love is a feeling you get when you find someone you would do anything for. It’s when you would do anything to protect that per- son, and care for them no matter what obstacles you face. Love is unconditional and has no limits. Love never ends; it only grows stronger. I’ve been lucky enough to experience love, and it is the best feeling. Love is a feeling that is hard to come by, but once you find it, you are changed forever. I found love about one year and six months ago. My boyfriend’s name is Timothy, and he is my best friend. He has helped me understand what love truly is. We care about each other, and we put each other first. When you are in a relationship, you have to consider how your actions affect the other person. We enjoy our time together be- cause every minute is precious. Relationships aren’t perfect, but if it’s love, you work for it. Not everything is perfect though. Some- times there are arguments, but they never come to the point where we question our love for one another. Our love is unconditional. We don’t isolate ourselves from the world like some couples do. We enjoy our time with each other, but we make time for our friends as well. We have the best times together; we’re con- stantly laughing and joking around with each other. -

Faulkner Ellington Graves 4/28/17 Blacksburg, Virginia Keywords: hip hop, rap, Mass Incarceration, oppression, Police brutality, Black liberation, The Black Lives Matter Movement, individual rights, social contract, pop culture, Kendrick Lamar Hip hop voices in the era of Mass Incarceration: An examination of Kendrick Lamar and The Black Lives Matter Movement Patrick Salmons ABSTRACT The United States has many problems currently, the most persistent of which is the issue of race, and the problem of Mass Incarceration. This thesis addresses what Mass Incarceration is, as well as developing a theoretical understanding of how to overcome Mass Incarceration through the music of Kendrick Lamar and The Black Lives Matter Movement. This thesis presents the questions: What is the era of Mass Incarceration? How does Kendrick Lamar’s music inform the problems of Mass Incarceration? How does The Back Lives Matter Movement use this information to create a solidarity movement against the oppression of African Americans? What does this mean going forward? Creating a synthesis of Mass Incarceration, the music of Kendrick Lamar, and The Black Lives Matter Movement, that overlaps and propels an intersection of culture and activism that inform one another. This all leads to the main takeaway of the thesis, that attempts to provide an interpretive understanding that pop culture, social media, and activism have created a different civil sphere, a Black public sphere that informs and educates through different avenues. -

Pi Kappa Alpha and Phi Delta Th eta were both denied the appeals, while Lambda Chi Alpha was placed on a re- stricted schedule until August and a probationary period until the next calendar. “We’re really happy… the guys are going to have to learn from this situation,” said Scott Jackson, adviser for Lambda Chi Alpha. “We hope our fellow students and the university can forgive us.” But, despite one group’s success, two others remain suspended from campus. Allegations against Phi Delta Th eta stated a new mem- ber of Phi Delta Th eta asked to be checked into Todd Hall, where it was noticed he had been drinking. Upon being checked in and brought to the Alpha Omnicron Pi’s fl oor he was to “kiss an AOIIs butt,” in the literal sense as part of a scavenger hunt. A representative for Alpha Omicron Pi said the group did not have comment on the activities.
