Life in a Padded Cell: A Biography of Tony Cohen, Australian Sound Engineer by Dale Blair ©copyright ~ One ~ Satan has possessed your Soul! ‘Tony is very devout in “God’s Lesson”. I cannot speak highly enough of Tony’s manners and behaviour. They are beyond reproach’. It was the sort of report card every parent liked to see. It was 1964. The Beatles were big and Tony Cohen was a Grade One student at St. Francis de Sales primary school, East Ringwood. The following year he took his first communion. The Beatles were still big and there seemed little to fear for the parents of this conscientious and attentive eight-year-old boy. The sisters who taught him at that early age would doubtless have been shocked at the life he would come to lead – a life that could hardly be described as devout. Tony Cohen was born on 4 June 1957 in the maternity ward of the Jessie MacPherson hospital in Melbourne. Now a place specializing in the treatment of cancer patients it was a general hospital then. He was christened Anthony Lawrence Cohen. His parents Philip and Margaret Cohen had been living in James Street, Windsor, but had moved to the outer eastern suburb of East Ringwood prior to the birth of their son. Philip Cohen was the son of Jewish immigrants who had left Manchester, England, and settled in Prahran, one of Melbourne’s inner eastern suburbs. Philip’s father had served in the First World War, survived and then migrated to Australia with his wife and infant son (Tony’s Uncle David).

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Neil Finn--Once Removed by Neil Finn Crowded House – “Don’t Dream It’s Over” It starts with that magical guitar riff, so unmistakable that it takes us back to the Fab Four days of the sixties—but no it’s not The Beatles but New Zealand’s Crowded House; Unbeknownst to Neil Finn who penned this already tender classic— “Don’t Dream It’s Over,” to my ears, is a modern day, 1980’s reimagining of John Lennon’s “A Day in the Life.” When asked about his Beatles influence Finn replied, “ Not directly, although I’m sure he’s in there somewhere – he’s always in my thoughts. My songs never have clear narratives. I describe moments, work in some feelings and hope for empathy. Growing up, that was my appreciation of music. When I first heard John Lennon singing Help! I thought he sounded really happy; I didn’t know he was seriously in trouble. To me, a good song is about intent, delivery and little resonances. I’m not interested in an intellectual process .” When talking about his craft, Neil Finn said this about songwriting, “I t’s like working with clay. You’ve just got to mould the words until they fit the type of rhythm and meter of the song really well. That’s where the craft comes in .” Neil delved further inside his gift of song when he told writer Graham Reid, “ I like to incorporate different events into the one thing, the formula of truth and reality and in-between is different for every song, but there’s always an element of all three.

REAL ROCK: AUTHENTICITY AND POPULAR MUSIC IN CANADA, 1984-1994 PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO SEPTEMBER 2018 © PAUL DAVID AIKENHEAD, 2018 Abstract This dissertation investigates the production and reception of English-Canadian rock music sound recordings, from 1984 to 1994, in relation to mutually constitutive understandings of race, ability, gender, sexuality, class, age, and place. It examines how different forms of domestic Anglo rock served to reinforce or subvert the dominant ideologies undergirding the social order in Canada during the late twentieth century. This study analyzes a multifaceted discourse about authenticity that illustrates the ways in which a host of people – including musicians, music journalists, record label representatives and other professionals from across the music industries, government administrators, and consumers – categorized recorded sound, defined bodily norms, negotiated commerce and technology, and evaluated collective communication in Canada. This study finds that the principle of originality fundamentally structured the categorization of sound recordings in Canada. Originality, according to rock culture, encompassed the balancing of traditionalism with innovation. This dissertation determines that Whiteness organized English-Canadian rock culture in terms of its corporeal standards. White bodies functioned as the norm against which racialized Others were compared and measured.
