(Below: Tim Finn, Paul Hester and others in the recording studio scene in the film) The indefatigable Mic Conway and his group also appear as a country band. Conway has a short wiki here, and at time of writing had his eponymous website here. (Below: Mic Conway and his band as they appear in the film). Greta Scacchi and producer David Rowe provided a little information about the music for the film, and related matters, in the Umbrella DVD 'making of': Rowe: The Coca-Cola jingle that's used in the film was written by Tim Finn and I think it's just fantastic… "don't want to go where there's no Coca-Cola" … Tim wrote it … I think it was the end of Split Enz and the beginning of Crowded House, so Paul Hester's in the film. -

Kasey Chambers was memorably inducted as the youngest female ever into the ARIA Hall of Fame. Keith Urban was acknowledged by the US Country Music Association as its Entertainer of The Year. Morgan Evans achieved notable #1’s on US, ARIA and Australian airplay charts. Country music festivals reported record attendances and box office results, moreAustralians are listening to more country on radio than ever before and music streaming – the juggernaut driving the global and Australian industry revival, is being enthusiastically embraced by country fans listening on their phones, in their cars and on tablets and smart speakers. More Australian country music artists are writing, recording and performing and are being listened to and watched by more fans than ever before. Over a seven month period, extensive desk research, industry consultation and the responses from 4,329 country music fans and 582 artists, enabled us to chart our genre’s progress since the first and only such report - ‘Australian Country Music:An Industry Profile’, was compiled in 1997. This current report concentrated on country music live performance, the recorded music market, songs and songwriting, country music broadcast and airplay and the cultural and social value it delivers to its fans and the broader community. The accumulated data has confirmed that country music 2018 is in a growth phase that all indicators and opinions suggest will continue. -

THE ALLNITERS Will Always Be Remembered for Their Big Sound, Cracking Tunes and Eccentric Exuberance
THE ALLNITERS will always be remembered for their big sound, cracking tunes and eccentric exuberance. Mischievous and a little bit cheeky, they’re the most successful ska act in Australian history and they’re back: bigger, bolder and brassier than ever after over 30 years, proving once and for all that THE ALLNITERS are Allriters … and evidently ska’d for life. It all began back in 1980 when a group of eight lads and one rude girl gravitated towards charismatic founding member Marty Fabok as the inner-city mod scene was percolating. They nattered, laughed and riffled through their favourite reggae, blues; disco, Jamaican blue beat and rock steady vinyl collections. Jaunty brass and tight rhythm sections were forged and THE ALLNITERS had officially arrived, donning their porkpie hats, braces and Doc Martens and chomping at the bit to burn up the live circuit with upbeat rhythms, walking bass-lines and contagious jocularity. The band cut its teeth as a live act at Sydney’s legendary Sussex Hotel and went on to become one of the hardest touring acts in the country. Attendance records were broken, as were stages, with audience members sometimes storming the stage to out-number the band, egged on by those spilling out the doors, thus threatening structural collapse. Regardless, THE ALLNITERS never failed to amuse, with hysterical, quick-witted onstage banter between vocalists Peter Travis and Brett Pattinson rivaling that of The Two Ronnie’s. The band rapidly became as renowned for their energetic sense of playfulness as for their larger than life new wave sound. -
Making Our Own—Two Ethnographies of the Vernacular in New Zealand Music: Tramping Club Singsongs and the Māori Guitar Strumming Style
Making our own—two ethnographies of the vernacular in New Zealand music: tramping club singsongs and the Māori guitar strumming style by Michael Brown A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington/Massey University in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Music New Zealand School of Music 2012 ii Abstract This work presents two ethnographies of the vernacular in New Zealand music. The ethnographies are centred on the Wellington region, and deal respectively with tramping club singsongs and the Māori guitar strumming style. As the first studies to be made of these topics, they support an overall argument outlined in the Introduction, that the concept of ―vernacular‖ is a valuable way of identifying and understanding some significant musical phenomena hitherto neglected in New Zealand music studies. ―Vernacular‖ is conceptualised as an informal, homemade approach that enables people to customise music-making, just as language is casually manipulated in vernacular speech. The different theories and applications which contribute to this perspective, taken from music studies and other disciplines, are examined in Chapter 1. A review of relevant New Zealand music literature, along with a methodological overview of the ethnographies is presented in Chapter 2. Each study is based upon different mixtures of techniques, including participant-observer fieldwork, oral history, interviews, and archival research. They can be summarised as follows: Tramping club singsongs: a medium of informal self-entertainment among New Zealand wilderness recreationists in the mid-twentieth century. The ethnography focuses on two clubs in the Wellington region, the Tararua Tramping Club and the Victoria University College Tramping Club, during the 1940s-1960s period, when changing social mores, tramping‘s camaraderie and individualism, and the clubs‘ different approaches, gave their singsongs a distinctive character. -
