Junior doctors, like general practitioners, are often faced with high levels of work related stress. The Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) recognises the impact stress can have on medical practitioners’ professional and personal lives, and potentially the quality of care they are able to provide their patients. The RACGP now offers a GP Support Program to help members^ cope with personal and work related issues. For only $142 (incl GST), you can become an RACGP resident and intern member and access this important service and an extensive range of clinical publications and educational resources valued at more than $1100 including: • check – monthly self education program • MyGeneralPractice – internet portal with evidence based clinical journals, quick to search • the RACGP John Murtagh Library and online resource centre • Prevocational General Practice Placements Program – unique opportunity to gain experience in general practice • GP Support Program (new) – free* counselling services provided by registered psychologists • gplearning – interactive online continuing medical education service • Australian Family Physician in hard copy, including bimonthly GPReview and GPessentials. ^ RACGP members who are Australian registered medical practitioners * Valued at $450 per year, based on three free sessions per fi nancial year Membership www.racgp.org.au/membership/residentintern Free call 1800 331 626 GP Support Program www.racgp.org.au/gpsupport PGPPP www.racgp.org.au/pgppp 7 A word from the Federal AMA Joining the AMA could very well be the best value for money investment that a medical student or junior doctor could make. The AMA provides support, friendship and networks for doctors throughout their careers. With around 28,000 members nationally, the AMA is a powerful and influential advocate for public health and for the professional interests of doctors. The AMA is non-partisan and completely independent of all governments, which gives the Association potency and credibility in debates on health policy and industrial matters. This influence extends to close and rewarding professional relationships with Federal MPs and Senators, based on a cooperative two-way flow of information and assistance and, above all, trust. And it works. This year the Federal AMA was voted the Best Lobby Group in a poll of Federal politicians. The AMA was ranked ahead of all the big business lobby groups and well ahead of any other medical or health association. There is no doubt that the AMA is the best friend and ally you can have as you progress and grow professionally throughout your medical career. But the professional assistance is not confined to the Federal AMA. Through the AMA family, your membership gives you access to networks and support locally through your State or Territory AMA. AMA advice and assistance is just around the corner or a phone call away. The assistance the AMA gives to junior and aspiring doctors is tailormade. Not only is considerable support provided to AMSA, the AMA Council of Doctors-in-Training (AMACDT) lobbies specifically on the issues that affect junior doctors. Both AMSA and AMACDT provides strong leadership, currently in the form of Tiffany Fulde and Dr Alex Markwell respectively. Tiffany and Alex both have a seat on the AMA Federal Council, the peak Council that represents all States and Territories and all branches of medicine. Your representatives are plugged directly into the AMA power source.
