J S Battye Library of West Australian History Private Archives – Collection Listing MN 791/1 Acc. 4481A; 5782A, 5784A, 5785A ROYAL AUSTRALIAN NURSING FEDERATION The Australian Nursing Federation (W.A. branch) was formed in 1924 by the amalgamation of the Royal Victorian Trained Nurses Association (W.A. branch) and the Australian Trained Nurses Association (W.A. branch). The Royal prefix was added in 1956 and the organisation began operating under the name Royal Australian Nursing Federation (W.A. branch). The federation was designed to protect the well being of trained Nurses. LIST OF ABBREVIATIONS USED: ACN - Australian College of Nursing. Set up by the newly formed NFNC in recognition of the need for post-graduate nursing education in 1949. ANF - Australian Nursing Federation. Formed in 1924 by the amalgamation of the RVTAA and the ATNA. ANFES The Australian Nursing Federation Employees Section. Branches were set up in most States and operated within the framework of the State Branches of the ANF. The ANFES and the ATNA now operated within the ANF. ATNA Australian Trained Nurses Association. Founded in 1899 in NSW. The WA Branch was formed in 1907. AUNA The Australian United Nurses Association. It became in 1951 the ANFES. FCM Federal Council Meeting. FNA Florence Nightingale Appeal. FNC Florence Nightingale Club. Set up in WA by the ATNA (WA Branch) in 1936 to attract members to ATNA from WANA. The Club operated as a social and educational meeting place for the nursing profession in Perth (any trained nurse could join). FNI The Florence Nightingale International Foundation. Inaugurated in July 1934 to establish and maintain a permanent international memorial to Florence Nightingale in the form of an endowment trust for post-graduate education. In response WA ATNA formed the FNMF. FNMC - Florence Nightingale Memorial Committee. The Committee was representative of other organizations with similar objectives, e.g. the Red Cross Society. FNMF (WA) Set up as a benevolent fund in 1911 to provide financial support for needy Nurses. It was financially supported by grants from the Council of the ATNA (State Branch) and voluntary subscribers. The incoming Council of the ATNA were authorized to frame the rules. ICN - International Council of Nurses. In 1937 the ICN recognized the ANF as representative of all Australian Nurses. This prompted the amalgamation of the ANF and the RVC (Royal Victorian College of Nursing). This new ANF acted as a National Council for the first Florence Nightingale National Committee to promote post-graduate education. Each State formed or reformed a Florence Nightingale Memorial Committee. INR - International Nursing Review. MNS - Male Nurses Section. NFNC - National Florence Nightingale Committee. NNED - National Nursing Education Division (division of RANF). NRB - Nurses Registration Board. NSNC - National Student Nurses Conference. ORNS - Operating Room Nurses Section. PTS - Preliminary Training School. QC - Quadrennial Congress. RANF - Royal Australian Nursing Federation. The Royal prefix was added in 1956. RCN - Reconstruction of Nursing Committee. RVTNA - Royal Victorian Trained Nurses Association. SNA - Student Nurses Association. SNU - Student Nurses Unit. SR - Tutors Sister Tutors. SNNU - Student Nurses National Unit. VTNG - Victorian Trained Nurses Guild. It became the AUNA. WANA - Western Australian Nurses Association. First formed in 1909 as an attempt to by-pass the strict training standards of the ATNA. It ceased to function through lack of support but was reformed in 1934 and eventually became the Western Australian Industrial Union of Workers. The ATNA (WA Branch) and the WANA amalgamated in 1954. The Papers The records were donated to the Battye Library by the Royal Australian Nursing Federation (Acc. 4481A; 5782A, 5784A, 5785A) at various times.
