The Olympic games of Barcelona 1992 was a landmark on this support of canoe slalom. Later those memorable days that permitted slalom to be accepted on the Olympic programme, seventeen World Cup events and the World Championships 1999 and 2009 endorse the facilities on Parc Olímpic del Segre and the organizing team. The 2018 Canoe Slalom World Cup, is going to be held from 3rd to 9th of September, is a new opportunity to give service to the slalom canoe family. The challenge aims to improve technology on sport competitions, presence on media (especially TV), and worldwide promotion of canoe slalom through the participation over 50 national teams, and attract tourism in La Seu d’Urgell. The history on the old town, the mountain valley around Cadí-Moixeró Natural Park, and the local dedication to sport should be known. In addition this occasion will keep active and financially healthy the Olympic facility of Park del Segre. The World Cup is possible thanks to the support of institutions and sponsorships. On behalf of the organizing Committee we thank their help. We trust on the contribution of the participant teams and we are ready to work for a fair competition and a happy stay in our country. On behalf of ICF, RFEP, FCP and the Organizing Committee, Welcome to the 2018 Canoe Slalom World Cup. 1st Newsletter 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup - La Seu d’Urgell (Spain) 4 Parc Olímpic del Segre venue The Parc Olímpic del Segre is constructed in a branch of the Segre river, which was re-channelled after the damage caused by the exceptional flood of 1982. The slalom course’s specific features are as follows: • Length: 300 m • Drop: 6,5 m • Flow: From 7 up to 12 m3/s • Course features: concrete bottom, banks and obstacles of natural boulders • Spectators capacity: 5.000 people The Competition Course is accompanied by a beginners course which is 130 m long with a drop of 1,5 m. The designed flow ranges from 3 to 10 m3/s. The design of the white water canals includes a system of complementary canals and mechanical conveyor belts which enable canoeists to return to their starting point without having to leave their boats. The dynamic conception of the whole facilities leads to intensive use all year round and separation of paddlers according to their levels of skill and ability. The drop in the Slalom course is created naturally via channels that branch from the Segre river, with a very gentle slope. The feeder canal, 185 in length, and mainly the flat water canal, 650 m in length and 20 m in width, are set aside for training in flat water canoeing and the necessary practice that sport lovers require in waters with a steady current. 1st Newsletter 2018 ICF Canoe Slalom World Cup - La Seu d’Urgell (Spain) 5 How to get to La Seu d’Urgell La Seu d'Urgell is placed at 10 km of Andorra and 180 km of Barcelona GPS: Latitude 42,22N / Longitude 1,28E HOW TO GET HERE: BARCELONA AIRPORT Novatel (Barcelona Airport - Andorra) It’s necessary to book the ticket. http://www.andorrabybus.com Tel. • TOWARDS the ROBOT BUTLER: the HUMABOT CHALLENGE Enric Cervera, Juan Carlos García, Pedro J
TOWARDS THE ROBOT BUTLER: THE HUMABOT CHALLENGE Enric Cervera, Juan Carlos García, Pedro J. Sanz Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Jaume I, Castellón, Spain {ecervera,garciaju,sanzp}@uji.es The HUMABOT Challenge has been the official robot competition for the 2014 IEEERAS International Conference on Humanoid Robots (HUMANOIDS’2014), which was held during this conference in Madrid (Spain, November 1820th). In fact, after a long time running this Humanoids Conference around the world, this is the first time that a competition is organized jointly with this event. In the following, some clues will be given concerning the logistic problems and the main aspects to succeed with this new competition. The original idea of this competition was due to Prof. Carlos Balaguer, General Chair of HUMANOIDS’2014. It is noticeable at this respect that Prof. Balaguer was the Coordinator of the Robotics Spanish Network (years 200609) and, during this period, a national humanoids competition (CEABOT) was consolidated thanks to his impulse. In the CEABOT competition there is the rule that the winner is in charge of organizing the next edition. It should be mentioned that University Jaume I (UJI) has been participating since 2007 and has won four years consecutively (20072010). In addition, UJI has been coorganizer of the competition since 2010. So, due to this long time experience, Prof. Balaguer chose UJI as the organizer of the first HUMABOT Challenge edition. A year before the Challenge, and during the very preliminary stage, we were envisioning a competition including three different dimensions, depending on the humanoid platform size selected: mini, middlesize or large.

  • Catalan Modernism and Vexillology
Catalan Modernism and Vexillology Sebastià Herreros i Agüí Abstract Modernism (Modern Style, Modernisme, or Art Nouveau) was an artistic and cultural movement which flourished in Europe roughly between 1880 and 1915. In Catalonia, because this era coincided with movements for autonomy and independence and the growth of a rich bourgeoisie, Modernism developed in a special way. Differing from the form in other countries, in Catalonia works in the Modern Style included many symbolic elements reflecting the Catalan nationalism of their creators. This paper, which follows Wladyslaw Serwatowski’s 20 ICV presentation on Antoni Gaudí as a vexillographer, studies other Modernist artists and their flag-related works. Lluís Domènech i Montaner, Josep Puig i Cadafalch, Josep Llimona, Miquel Blay, Alexandre de Riquer, Apel·les Mestres, Antoni Maria Gallissà, Joan Maragall, Josep Maria Jujol, Lluís Masriera, Lluís Millet, and others were masters in many artistic disciplines: Architecture, Sculpture, Jewelry, Poetry, Music, Sigillography, Bookplates, etc. and also, perhaps unconsciously, Vexillography. This paper highlights several flags and banners of unusual quality and national significance: Unió Catalanista, Sant Lluc, CADCI, Catalans d’Amèrica, Ripoll, Orfeó Català, Esbart Català de Dansaires, and some gonfalons and flags from choral groups and sometent (armed civil groups). • Catalan Farmhouses and Farming Families in Catalonia Between the 16Th and Early 20Th Centuries

It underwent major changes from its origins in the 11th century until the 16th century, when its evolu- tion peaked and a prototype was reached for Catalonia as a whole. For this reason, in the subsequent centuries the model did not change, but building elements were added to it in order to adapt the home to the times. Catalan farmhouses are a historical testimony, and their changes and enlargements always reflect the needs of their inhabitants and the technological possibilities of the period. Keywords: evolution, architectural models, farmhouses, rural economy, farming families Introduction techniques or the spread of these techniques became availa- ble to more and more people. Continuing Education at the University of Lleida (ES) – Summary 1. History The university was created in 1300 by the king Jaume II with the idea to increase Catalonia’s power in the Mediterranean area. Students from other parts of Spain went to Lleida and the commerce and manufacture (paper and books in particular) increased considerably. Lleida became a center of exchange and diffusion of ideas and scientific innovation. Wars with other countries and internal issues put the university in a period of decline. The Spanish reform created a new model of university and in 1717 a new university was formed in Cervera which implied the closing down of the University of Lleida as such. In 1991 the Catalan Parliament approved the opening of the University of Lleida again. Lleida is the most important city in the interior of Catalonia with 120000 inhabitants and about 10000 students. The university has 5 campuses. 2. Continuing Education at the University of Lleida The Statutes of the university establish the improvement of teaching and the contribution to lifelong learning in order to develop social cohesion, equality of opportunities and quality of life. One of the university’s objectives is the development of continuing education programmes under very strict quality parameters. Continuing education is understood as all those courses that have as main objective to upgrade knowledge in any form as well as the development of personal and professional competences. The main characteristic of the continuing education at the university is its thematic diversity, that implies a complementary education in the basic education of Bachelor degree and it has been thought in a global way for those interested to improve their professional and cultural qualifications.
