Leasing Contributing to Redevelopment in the Nihonbashi Area Sixth Management Plan—Key Initiatives LEASING Nihonbashi 2-Chome Project Bunkyo Shinjuku Chiyoda Contributing to redevelopment in the Nihonbashi area Shibuya Chuo Located at Nihonbashi intersection, one of Japan’s leading business districts, Minato this site is about 8,800 square meters. Eitai St. Tozai Line, Nihonbashi Station Chuo Section 8 Section 7 Location Chuo Ward Asakusa Line, Nihonbashi StationAsakusa Gross floor area 42,000 tsubo Expected completion Ginza Line, Nihonbashi Station Chuo St. Showa St. Showa Feb. 2015 No. of floors Project site 35 above ground / 4 below ground Project Features 1 Enhanced functionality as a transportation hub To make it easier to transfer and relieve congestion at Nihonbashi Station, where three different sub- way lines intersect, the project will feature an underground open space that connects the building and the station, as well as an open space of approximately 1,500m2 facing Nihonbashi intersection. 2 Abundant space for pedestrians The building will be set back to preserve an open space in front of the station, and with barrier- free access between the station and street level, the area will become safer and easier for pedestri- ans to navigate. 3 Enhanced community disaster preparedness In addition to fireproofing and earthquake resistance, the building will have an emergency generator that can provide power for 72 hours, as well as a storage facility for emergency provisions. In the event of a disaster, the open space in front of the station can be used as a first aid station and supply center, and has room for portable toilets. 4 Place for meeting and exchange A facility displaying tourist information will be installed near Nihonbashi Station, which offers easy ac- cess to and from Narita and Haneda airports. The project will also include the area’s largest multipur- pose hall (more than 1,000m2), which will have an exhibition area and reception desk, and can be used for seminars and symposiums. 5 State-of-the-art office specifications The facility will incorporate business continuity planning (BCP) with an earthquake-resistant structure and a 72-hour supply of backup power, using a range of the latest equipment to prepare for an earth- quake or power outage. The office floors will have approximately 820 tsubo of leasable floor space on standard floors, and the rooms are designed without internal pillars, creating an open feeling and high- ly efficient layout..

    — Unearthing the Four-Hundred-Year History of a Wholesale Fish Market — The History of Nihonbashi Uogashi Part 2: The Popularity of Fish in Edo By Issei Tomioka A book titled, Edo Hanjoki, by Terakado Seiken (1796–1868) that described the manners and customs of the people of Edo near the end of the Edo period (1603–1867), notes that the people loved fish so much that they said their bones would fall apart if they went without fish for three days. Several tens of thousands of fish were consumed each day. This book also depicted, in a humorous man- ner, the dynamic way in which the Uogashi, or wholesale fish market, handled their sea of fish. Accepted 27 June, 2011 A bridge is a structure built to span physical obstacle such as a body of water, city, or road, for the purpose of providing passage over the obstacle. Bridges are a unique offshoot of architecture and possess their own associated terms, components and styles. This paper presents the second part of Japanese bridges by investigating architectural aspects of its design. Limited usable land in heavily populated areas of Japan has often necessitated the design of unique bridge approaches. One of such design is the spiral viaduct bridge approach. When this design is used, care is taken to make the structures aesthetically appealing. An important reason for the bridge construction will lead into a critical study of bridge aesthetics and structural design. According to the configuration of frameworks, bridges may be described as arched, girdered and cable stayed or suspension. Refereeing to Japanese bridges, those most frequently provided cable stayed in the construction of bridges are important factor in architecture and bridges aesthetic. This paper presents a brief history of bridge design in Japan, and then discusses the influence of technical factors on Japan bridges design.
