November 2019 Newsletter The Epiphany Star November 2019 Newsletter of Epiphany Lutheran Church Fort Wayne, Indiana Dear Epiphany Lutheran Church, Grace to you and peace from God our Father and our Lord and Savior Jesus the Christ. Amen What a year of celebrating God’s blessings 2019 has been! It is hard to believe that we have been planning and implementing events for over a year! We started the year with Epiphany Sunday in January with a pulpit drama about the early days of Epiphany and how our name came to be. Then we had the Neighborhood/Church Picnic where we spent some time outdoors in the beauty of God’s creation. It was one of the few times we planned an outdoor worship service and it didn’t rain! That was a miracle there. Then the Annual Car Show where we had more cars, trucks and even a motorcycle in attendance. We added a new dimension to the event with free food provided through the generosity of Thrivent Financial with one of the Action Team Projects. All the efforts were geared towards the “Homecoming Celebration” on October 20th. Invitations were sent out to Bishop Gafkjen of the Indiana/Kentucky Synod, Pastor Steve and Ann Albertin, former members (including trying to get charter members who are currently alive), current members and friends of Epiphany. Special music with a reunion choir was planned for the service. A new parament was designed and made to be placed in the sanctuary. Big hopes and plans were made by a number of people in hopes that the 50th Anniversary of Epiphany Lutheran Church would be a true celebration of God’s work in our midst. What a year it has been! God has indeed blessed us abundantly and we have celebrated those blessings. These events could not have happened without the hard work and dedication of a number of people who were on the 50th Anniversary Task Force: Dennis & Karen Payne, Lee & Sandy Hedin, Barb Werling, Darla Boughman, Joe & Vicki Malott, Sue Davis and Dia Herb. A special thank you to all who made this year a great 50th Anniversary. We saw God’s actions in our mission and ministry. It is in our DNA of the congregation to reach out and share God’s gifts. If you happened to have taken any pictures during any of the 50th Anniversary festivities I would really like to have a copy of them. If you would send them electronically or physically hand me a copy of the pictures, I would appreciate it. I am in the process of trying to put together a booklet of all the pictures from the 50th to keep here at Epiphany . for the 75th Anniversary In Christ, Pastor Richard Hartman We are Christians, called by God, committed to: Sharing the Gospel, Serving others as Christ taught us, and Creating disciples for witness. • Sanctuary Theology in the Book of Exodus
Andrews University Seminary Studies, Summer 1986, Vol. 24, No. 2, 127-145. Copyright@ 1986 by Andrews University Press. SANCTUARY THEOLOGY IN THE BOOK OF EXODUS ANGEL MANUEL RODRIGUEZ Antillian College Mayaguez, Puerto Rico 00709 The book of Exodus is the first OT book that mentions the Israelite sanctuary. This book provides us not only with precise information with respect to the sanctuary's physical structure and furniture, but also with basic information on its significance. The present study proposes to take an overview of several important theological motifs that emerge in connection with the ancient Israelite sanctuary as portrayed in the book of Exodus. Although various of these aspects have already been noticed by other researchers, my hope herein is to bring together certain significant elements in such a way as to broaden our understanding of the ancient Hebrew concept of the meaning of the ancient Israelite sanctuary. At the outset, it is appropriate to state that the various ele- ments we shall consider all have a bearing upon, and contribute to, an overarching theological concern related to the OT sanctuary/ temple: namely, the presence of Yahweh. Moreover, the book of Exodus is foundational for a proper understanding of this basic motif, as it describes how the people of Israel were miraculously delivered from Egyptian slavery by Yahweh, and how, by his grace, they became a holy nation under his leadership. He entered into a covenant relationship with them, and gave them the precious gift of his own presence.' 'The theology of the presence of God is a very important one in the OT.

Bach Joseph Dearest, Joseph Mine Keith Chapman Call to Worship Opening Hymn O Little Town of Bethlehem Lewis Henry Redner 1. O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by. Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting light; The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight. 2. For Christ is born of Mary and, gathered all above, While mortals sleep, the angels keep their watch of wondering love. O morning stars, together proclaim the holy birth, And praises sing to God the king, and peace to all on earth. 3. How silently, how silently, the wondrous gift is given! So God imparts to human hearts the blessings of his heaven. No ear may hear his coming, but in this world of sin, Where meek souls will receive him, still the dear Christ enters in. 4. O holy child of Bethlehem, descend to us, we pray; Cast out our sin and enter in; be born in us today. We hear the Christmas angels the great glad tidings tell; O come to us; abide with us, our Lord Emmanuel! Advent Prayer and Candle Lighting Ministry of Music “Sing Lullaby!” from A Light in the Stable Alan Bullard Sing lullaby! Lullaby baby, now reclining, sing lullaby! Hush, do not wake the infant king.

  • Slayage, Number 9: Abbott
Stacey Abbott Walking the Fine Line Between Angel and Angelus [1] Much of the discussion and analysis of the television series Buffy the Vampire Slayer has focused upon the show’s moral complexity in its representation of good and evil. Joss Whedon’s world is a world of grays rather than crisp black and white oppositions. The character Angel, the vampire with a soul, was one of the earliest introductions of this ambiguity into the series. The slayer and her friends were forced to accept that a vampire could be good. Difficult to accept but not as difficult as a loving boyfriend who can turn evil over night . again embodied in Angel. He offered the young Slayer, her friends and the audience a lot to think about in those first two seasons. While initially morally complex, as the series has developed and explored the far reaches of moral ambiguity through the actions of all of the Scooby Gang, Angel’s representation seems too neatly split across polar oppositions: the good Angel versus the evil Angelus. These two sides of Angel have been described by Beth Braun as “tortured soul” and “soulless demon” (90) and by Mary Alice Money as “soulful vampire extraordinaire” and “evil über-vampire” (98-99). [2] Rhonda V. Wilcox suggests, in “Every Night I Save You: Buffy, Spike, Sex and Redemption,” “[that] since Angel is good because he possesses a soul, he still represents an essentialist definition of good.” This is in contrast to the vampire Spike, who, she argues, “owns no human soul, yet repeatedly does good; if he can be seen as capable of change, capable of good, capable of love, then he can represent an existentialist definition of good” (paragraph 15).

It is astonishing that scenes of voudouism and warlockry still pre vail and are not merely traditionary in Lou isiana, though there is a judicial prohibition of these practices.
