75th Anniversary of the Ramblers Association in 2010

The Ramblers Association founded in 1935 is 75 years old this year. A national event celebrating this is being organised, passing a baton from one walking event to another and some Norfolk Groups have thought of linking into this. See www.ramblers75.org.uk

Three other activities have been suggested which might have some long term practical value.

One is to identify paths which leaders do not like to take parties along because the difficulties are too many or too great, and they find an easier alternative which may mean walking on roads. Our parish files may be able to give a history of correspondence about these problems. What is needed is an individual or group to develop a plan for action for each path to get the problem resolved. Apart from writing to the County Council officers, it might need an approach to the parish council and the county councillor. The advantage in a Group tackling a problem is that it suggests a local interest in the problem.

A second activity is being involved with the 100 mile stretch of the coastal path for Norfolk. Natural England has announced that Norfolk will be one of the priority areas for implementation of the Marine and Coastal Access Act. At a recent presentation at Ely, Natural England was thinking that they would start work in Norfolk in April 2011. The present Norfolk Coast Path only covers part of this distance and in some places is not all that close to the sea. Maybe each of our Groups that cover the coast could make a report detailing where the coastal path could run at present, perhaps with options for the future when erosion takes its toll. The results could then be used in discussions with Natural England, the County Council and Ramblers Central Office which has coastal access as one of its priority areas for work. People interested may like to look up Natural England’s draft scheme for coastal access on http://naturalengland.etraderstores.com/ NaturalEnglandShop/NE222 or another presentation on www.defra.gov.uk/rural/ countryside/coastaccess.htm

The third suggestion which may appeal to individuals is to research paths which are not yet shown on the Definitive Map of rights of way. The research can be on paths which are well known to the individual , or picked from a bunch which may be near to that person. The research may be close to the path such as interviewing users, or going through parish council minutes. Or it may be more distant such as in the County Record Office looking at district council minutes or studying an enclosure award. It was work such as this that enabled John Harris to get the Sussex Farm path at Burnham Market properly put on the Definitive Map last year. If anyone is interested in any of the above activities, you can either discuss it within your Group or contact me on 01603 622539 or [email protected]

FP4 Newton by Castle Acre

On 12th November I was checking the route of a walk from Castle Acre, via GUIDE BOOKS – PRICE LIST Newton, for the monthly column in the EDP Norfolk magazine, about six miles mainly along good tracks and paths it was an ideal walk for less experienced Peddars Way & Norfolk Coast Path with Weavers Way Guide and Accommodation List, public transport information etc. £3.30 walkers, and indeed for anyone looking for an easy walk in beautiful countryside. On crossing the A1065 near Newton we were disconcerted to be faced with a steep Angles Way Guide, includes Accommodation and public transport bank down into a field, it was not easy to get down then and as the walk was 78 miles, Gt. Yarmouth to Knettishall through S Norfolk and N Suffolk £2.70 planned for the February issue I was most concerned as to how it would be affected by extra use - and that was before I knew how horrible February would be! Iceni Way Guide, includes Accommodation List. 84 miles, Knettishall to Fortuitously the next Area Council was little more than a week away and one of the Hunstanton). First 16 miles provides off road link between Knettishall things to be discussed was a donation to Norfolk County Council for footpath and Thetford, can be combined with either Peddars Way or Angles Way £2.70 improvements. Area Council agreed that the cost of steps for FP4 could be taken Rambles – 16 circular walks - 51/2 to 101/4 miles £2.70 out of the donation and NCC agreed to do the work before the end of January. On th 27 February I had the opportunity to inspect the results. The walk is also included, Southern Norfolk Rambles – 16 circular walks - 6 to 11 miles £2.70 as walk 18, in ―Around Norfolk with the Ramblers‖ – so you may test it out for 1 yourselves if you wish. I do admit that on 27th February parts of the walk were West Norfolk Walkaway – 2 – 16 circular walks - 4 /2 to 12 miles £2.70 rather muddier than we would wish, but perhaps by the time you read this, West Norfolk Walkaway – 3 – 16 circular walks - 5 to 91/2 miles £2.70 conditions will be a little drier.
