A national event celebrating this is being organised, passing a baton from one walking event to another and some Norfolk Groups have thought of linking into this. See www.ramblers75.org.uk Three other activities have been suggested which might have some long term practical value. One is to identify paths which leaders do not like to take parties along because the difficulties are too many or too great, and they find an easier alternative which may mean walking on roads. Our parish files may be able to give a history of correspondence about these problems. What is needed is an individual or group to develop a plan for action for each path to get the problem resolved. Apart from writing to the County Council officers, it might need an approach to the parish council and the county councillor. The advantage in a Group tackling a problem is that it suggests a local interest in the problem. A second activity is being involved with the 100 mile stretch of the coastal path for Norfolk. Natural England has announced that Norfolk will be one of the priority areas for implementation of the Marine and Coastal Access Act. At a recent presentation at Ely, Natural England was thinking that they would start work in Norfolk in April 2011. The present Norfolk Coast Path only covers part of this distance and in some places is not all that close to the sea. Maybe each of our Groups that cover the coast could make a report detailing where the coastal path could run at present, perhaps with options for the future when erosion takes its toll. The results could then be used in discussions with Natural England, the County Council and Ramblers Central Office which has coastal access as one of its priority areas for work. People interested may like to look up Natural England’s draft scheme for coastal access on http://naturalengland.etraderstores.com/ NaturalEnglandShop/NE222 or another presentation on www.defra.gov.uk/rural/ countryside/coastaccess.htm The third suggestion which may appeal to individuals is to research paths which are not yet shown on the Definitive Map of rights of way. The research can be on paths which are well known to the individual , or picked from a bunch which may be near to that person. The research may be close to the path such as interviewing users, or going through parish council minutes. Or it may be more distant such as in the County Record Office looking at district council minutes or studying an enclosure award. It was work such as this that enabled John Harris to get the Sussex Farm path at Burnham Market properly put on the Definitive Map last year. If anyone is interested in any of the above activities, you can either discuss it within your Group or contact me on 01603 622539 or [email protected] 2 31 The Ramblers’ Association Norfolk Area Newsletter & Walks Programme April - July 2010 Tel: 0845 331 2782 Linear Walks Mobile: 07802 270598 Email: [email protected] I had hoped to be able to announce that there would be a linear walk in 2010, but Web: www.inter-logic.co.uk sadly that is not possible as no volunteers came forward in time.
