The Ramblers’ Norfolk Area Newsletter & Walks Programme December 2017 - March 2018

Welcoming ALL walkers

THETFORD Tuesdays and Fridays - choice of a long or shorter walk (subject to availability of walk leaders) Prompted by our contacts at the Annual General Meeting with the Guide Dogs for the Blind Contact Monroe on 01842 755207 or email [email protected] or Anne Pearce on 01953 456222 or email [email protected] Association, Area Council has agreed a policy through which it wants to make our walks Date Time Town & Start Point Post Code Walk Name Miles available to the widest possible number of people. We believe that, by making quite small 01-Dec-17 10:00 /Riverside Kiosk IP24 2AG IP24 2AG Barnham Common 4 ‘reasonable adjustments’, our walks could be open to many people who might currently feel

05-Dec-17 10:00 THETFORD/Sainsburys Car Park London Road IP24 3QL IP24 3QL St Edmunds/Hereward Way 3 excluded from them. The policy is set out below. 08-Dec-17 10:00 THETFORD/Riverside Kiosk IP24 2AG IP24 2AG BTO Nunnery Lakes 2.3 Norfolk Area of The Ramblers wishes to make all of its activities, especially its walks, available 12-Dec-17 10:00 THETFORD/2 Mile Bottom Picnic Site/A134 -Thetford/Mundford Road TL849 873 2 Mile Bottom Picnic Site 3 to as many people as possible who wish to participate. In regard to people who have any sensory loss or disability but who wish to join any of our walks, we will on request make every 15-Dec-17 10:00 THETFORD/Riverside Kiosk IP24 2AG IP24 2AG Kingfisher Lake 4 effort to provide enough information about the nature of the walk to enable the person enquiring 19-Dec-17 10:00 THETFORD/Thorpe Forest Park (Post Code: IP24 2RX) IP24 2RX Thorpe Forest Park (Thetford) 3.2 to decide whether or not they wish to join it. We will wherever possible make arrangements 22-Dec-17 10:00 KNETTISHALL HEATH COUNTRY PARK (West Car Park) IP22 2TQ IP22 2TQ Knettishall Heath 3 designed to make the walk as widely available as possible, subject to our walk leaders retaining 29-Dec-17 10:00 Brandon Country Park IP27 0SU IP27 0SU Purple Route 3.5 ultimate responsibility for the safety and well being of all walkers: where we can make reasonable adjustments, we will always do so. Our members will seek to welcome and support 02-Jan-18 10:00 THETFORD/Castle Street Car Park IP24 2DW IP24 2DW Willows or Kilverstone Riverside Walk2.7 all who join our walks, but where specific additional assistance is needed, we would expect the 05-Jan-18 10:00 RISHBETH WOOD/WARREN LODGE (Thetford B1107 - Just after golf course)TL842 840 Rishbeth Wood/Warren Lodge 4.6 person concerned to arrange that assistance. 09-Jan-18 10:00 THETFORD/East Wretham Nature Reserve Car Park on A1075 TL917 887TL917 887 East Wretham Nature Reserve 2.7 Walking along some of our paths presents obvious challenges to people who have mobility 12-Jan-18 10:00 HIGH LODGE/Thetford Forest IP27 0AF IP27 0AF High Lodge 3.5 or sight issues, but many of those challenges can be resolved with a bit of effort and 16-Jan-18 10:00 LYNFORD STAG A134 Thetford/Mundford Road TL815 916 TL815 916 Lynford Stag 3 willingness to find solutions. The onus is on us to show that we will try our hardest to enable 19-Jan-18 10:00 SANTON DOWNHAM Forestry Commission Offices Car Park IP27 0AU IP27 0AU Santon Downham 2 or 4 a willing walker to join us. At the heart of the policy is the need for dialogue - a prospective 23-Jan-18 10:00 THETFORD/Sainsburys Car Park London Road IP24 3QL IP24 3QL St Edmunds/Hereward Way 3 walker must feel able to be realistic about what is reasonably possible for them, and we

26-Jan-18 10:00 THETFORD/Riverside Kiosk IP24 2AG IP24 2AG Barnham Common 4 need to provide full and clear information about what might cause difficulties; we then also need to be ready to change our arrangements where we can to meet that person’s needs if 30-Jan-18 10:00 THETFORD/Riverside Kiosk IP24 2AG IP24 2AG BTO Nunnery Lakes 2.3 at all possible. 02-Feb-18 10:00 THETFORD/Riverside Kiosk IP24 2AG IP24 2AG Kingfisher Lake 4

06-Feb-18 10:00 THETFORD/Thorpe Forest Park (Post Code: IP24 2RX) IP24 2RX Thorpe Forest Park (Thetford) 3.2 We would expect that anyone who anticipates potential difficulties in joining a walk would make early contact with the walk leader, so that those difficulties can be understood, and 09-Feb-18 10:00 KNETTISHALL HEATH COUNTRY PARK (West Car Park) IP22 2TQ IP22 2TQ Knettishall Heath 3 measures considered which could resolve them. Where someone needs quite specific 13-Feb-18 10:00 THETFORD/2 Mile Bottom Picnic Site/A134 -Thetford/Mundford Road TL849 873 2 Mile Bottom 3 support (eg someone to accompany them throughout), we would expect that they would 16-Feb-18 10:00 Brandon Country Park IP27 0SU IP27 0SU Purple Route 3.5 provide that support themselves. If support was needed only for specific issues (eg crossing 20-Feb-18 10:00 THETFORD/East Wretham Nature Reserve Car Park on A1075 TL917 887TL917 887 East Wretham Nature Reserve 2.7 a stile), we would hope that the walk leader would be able to arrange that from amongst the 23-Feb-18 10:00 SANTON DOWNHAM Forestry Commission Offices Car Park IP27 0AU IP27 0AU Santon Downham 2 or 4 other walkers. 27-Feb-18 10:00 LYNFORD STAG A134 Thetford/Mundford Road TL815 916 TL815 916 Lynford Stag 3 We are aware that dogs - and hence the use of guide dogs - can present particular 02-Mar-18 10:00 HIGH LODGE/Thetford Forest IP27 0AF IP27 0AF High Lodge 3.5 problems, but would not expect a blanket refusal to allow dogs on walks. Some routes may 06-Mar-18 10:00 THETFORD/Sainsburys Car Park London Road IP24 3QL IP24 3QL St Edmunds/Hereward Way 3 exclude dogs (eg if that is a condition of accessing land crossed by the route) but we would

If the reasons for this are clear, most of those situations will be accepted - after all, there are plenty of other walks that may well be possible. We would hope that disputes will be very rare, as they are now when walk leaders have to refuse participation from someone whom they feel cannot safely be allowed to join a walk. Any problems of this sort that do arise should be referred to Richard May. 34 3 The Ramblers’ Norfolk Area Newsletter & Walks Programme December 2017 - March 2018
