Mammalian Wealth of Sikkim
MAMMALIAN WEALTH OF SIKKIM Rina Chakraborty ABSTRACT he mammalian fauna of Sikkim comprises of 125 species and sub-species under 24 families and 10 orders of which about 18% are threatened. The faunal variety is so high as the state acts as a transitional zone between TPalaearctic and Oriental fauna. The mammalian fauna comprising of little more than 2.5% of the total faunal wealth of the state. In relation to the Indian vertebrate species the percent species diversity of Sikkim mammal is 2.57% and that in relation to mammalian species of the country is 31.5% which is very high in relation to the geographical area, probably due to its geographical position. There is no mammal in the state which could be treated as true endemic. There are a number of threatened species distributed in the state which needs proper conservation and study. The state is bounded by Nepal in the west, Bhutan and Chumbi valley of Tibet in the east, Tibetan plateau in the north Sand north-east and Darjeeling district of West Bengal along its southern boundary. The geographical coordinates are 27o 04' 46” to 28o 07' 48” N latitudes and 88o 00' 58” and 88o 55' 25” E longitudes, covering an area of 7096 km2. For 23 years, Hodgson was posted to Nepal as an official of the British East India Company—at a time when Nepal was virtually terra incognita to Europeans. Hodgson was an energetic polymath who, in addition to carrying out his political and diplomatic duties, published widely on the ethnography, linguistics, architecture, religion and natural history of Nepal and the Himalayas. He published more than 140 scientific papers on zoological subjects, ranging from descriptions of new species to checklists of the fauna. A projected massive volume surveying the birds and mammals of the central Himalaya was unfortunately never completed due to lack of funds, but the present paintings are taken from sketchbooks which Hodgson presented to the Zoological Society of London toward the end of his life. -

ACADEMIA JOURNAL OF BIOLOGY 2019, 41(3): 123–127 DOI: 10.15625/2615-0923/v41n3.13791 FIRST RECORDS OF BATS (Mammalia: Chiroptera) FROM SON LA CITY, NORTHWESTERN VIETNAM, WITH REMARKS ON THEIR CONSERVATION STATUS Dao Nhan Loi Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry, Tay Bac University, Son La, Vietnam Received 19 May 2019, accepted 20 August 2019 ABSTRACT Son La is a well-known city in the Northwestern region of Vietnam for its outstanding landscapes. It contains a variety of ecosystems ranging from farming area, valleys, forests on hills and karst with cave systems. Natural habitats of the city would be suitable for many bat species. However, bats of the city were not included in any literature. Between March 2014 and June 2018, we conducted a series of bat surveys in this city using mist nets and harp traps. Results from our study indicated that Son La city is a home to at least 21 bat species belonging to 9 genera, 6 families. Of which, Rhinolophus thomasi was listed as “VU” (Vulnerable) in the 2007 Red Book of Vietnam and Myotis annamiticus was listed in the IUCN Redlist of the Threatened Species as “DD” (Data Deficient). This paper provides the first data on bats of Son La city with morphological measurements and conservation status of each recorded species.
