HUNG iv ABSTRACT Boundaries and Belonging: Asian America, Psychology, and Psychoanalysis By Natalie Hung Advisor: Professor Paul Wachtel This dissertation addresses a vexing problem. In psychology and psychoanalysis, Asian Americans are more often understood as a collective Other than as individual Selves, more frequently an object of study than a subject. Through two overarching aims, my dissertation sheds light on neglected aspects of Asian American selves, the meanings of the invisibility surrounding them, and implications for clinical practice. First, the project challenges extant psychological perspectives on Asian Americans, which often implicitly assume a wide gulf of difference between Asian American cultural values and the Western epistemologies of psychology and psychoanalysis. Through the examination of academic research, clinical literature, and social scientific perspectives, my research outlines several contextual factors that contribute to this trend, including the structural binary between “the individual” and “the social” in psychoanalysis and psychology, ambivalent dynamics of anti-Asian racism, and collective anxieties about Asian Otherness. Second, influenced by relational psychoanalytic theory, my dissertation seeks to reconfigure and broaden perspectives on Asian Americans in psychology and psychoanalysis. BOUNDARIES AND BELONGING – N. HUNG v My foregrounded field of inquiry begins broad and becomes increasingly narrow, moving from international, to national, to interpersonal, to clinical contexts. Chapter 2 examines the three binaries—East-West, shame-guilt, and individualism-collectivism—that structure most psychological studies about Asian Americans. Chapter 3 brings to bear a psychological perspective on the histories and contemporary manifestations of racialization and cultural identities of Asian Americans. Chapter 4 reviews the subtle and ambivalent nature of anti-Asian racism through a close investigation and relational understanding of racial microaggressions. Finally, using empirical literature and case studies, Chapter 5 identifies and challenges the “culture gap narrative,” the overculturalized explanation for the underutilization of the mental health system by Asian Americans that assumes radical difference between Asian Americans and Western psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. HUNG 1 CHAPTER 1 BOUNDARIES AND BELONGING Belonging means that we have a place in the world, but it also means that we find ourselves placed in the world. (Dalal, 2012, p. 408) The impulse to write this dissertation is the culmination of a lifetime of reflection on my racial and cultural identity and the relative beginning of my socialization as a psychoanalytically informed therapist. This process led me to consider some painful questions as an American-born daughter of Taiwanese immigrants who is also a trainee, patient, and therapist. Where is my place in psychoanalysis in the United States? And relatedly, why does it feel like there is no such place? These questions guided many of my intellectual, theoretical, and professional interests. My pursuits led me to shame, to immigration, to studies about Asian Americans1, to other disciplines like sociology, anthropology, and social psychology. My anecdotal impression was that culture (and attendantly, race, ethnicity, language, diversity, etc.) had failed to sufficiently infiltrate certain strains of psychoanalytic theory in the United States. Instead, “culture” was relegated to psychological disciplines apart from psychoanalysis, encapsulated by multicultural competence or approaches of a positivist psychology mainly devoted to identifying differences in psychological sequelae between Asian Americans and European Americans in a cross-cultural 1 Throughout the dissertation, I will focus mainly on people of East Asian descent (including those China, Hong Kong, Japan, Mongolia, North Korea, South Korea, and Taiwan) and Southeast Asian descent (those from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam) because they share certain phenotypical characteristics that engage similar stereotypes, not because their cultural norms are homogenous. Thus, the familiar shorthand of “Asian American” will generally be used to refer to East Asian Americans and Southeast Asian Americans. Similarly, “Asian” will be used to specify East Asians and Southeast Asians. I do not include people of South Asian and Central Asian descent who have different cultures, histories, and phenotypes, and thus have related, but different racial identities in America. If I am departing from these definitions, I will specifically note it. BOUNDARIES AND BELONGING – N. HUNG 2 framework. These attempts, while a well-intentioned starting point, somehow lacked the dynamism and sensitivity that I found appealing about much of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theory. Upon reflection, I realized that it was not that I had no place, but that my place in psychoanalysis, psychology, and America was constricted by invisible lines that I could not seem to cross, let alone, articulate. My search led me to learn about a history of legalized exclusion of Asian people from America that had been

Benedict, Ph.D. ABSTRACT This dissertation is the first study to examine the Irish and Chinese interethnic and interracial dynamic in the United States and the British Empire in Australia and Canada during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Utilizing comparative and transnational perspectives and drawing on multinational and multilingual archival research including Chinese language sources, “The Global Irish and Chinese” argues that Irish immigrants were at the forefront of anti-Chinese movements in Australia, Canada, and the United States during the second half of the nineteenth century. Their rhetoric and actions gave rise to Chinese immigration restriction legislation and caused major friction in the Qing Empire’s foreign relations with the United States and the British Empire. Moreover, Irish immigrants east and west of the Rocky Mountains and on both sides of the Canada-United States border were central to the formation of a transnational white working-class alliance aimed at restricting the flow of Chinese labor into North America. Looking at the intersections of race, class, ethnicity, and gender, this project reveals a complicated history of relations between the Irish and Chinese in Australia, Canada, and the United States, which began in earnest with the mid-nineteenth century gold rushes in California, New South Wales, Victoria, and British Columbia.

Seward’s True Folly Seward’s True Folly: American Diplomacy and Strategy during “Our Little War With the Heathens,” Korea, 1871 Ian Murray From June 10 to June 12, 1871, American amphibious forces engaged in a forty-eight hour battle with the Chosŏn dynasty of Korea. Though trivialized in the New York Herald under the headline of “Our Little War With the Heathens,”1 the affair inflicted more casualties on Asian peoples than any other American military action until the Philippine uprising of 1899. A fleet boasting five Americans warships set sail for Korea on May 16th with eighty pieces of cannon and 1,230 men aboard, under the command of Rear Admiral John Rodgers. The expedition pursued a diplomatic mission—the opening of Korea to international commercial trade—entrusted to United States Minister to China Frederick Low. However, the expedition secured authorization from the State Department to impose their aims by force if necessary.

    1 Austin Dean, The Ohio State University Hayes Graduate Research Forum, March 1, 2013 Coins, Counterfeiting and the State in the 19th Century In April 2011 U.S. Customs and Border Protection Agents at O’Hare airport in Chicago became suspicious after x-raying a package. Opening the parcel, they did not find drugs, explosives, or any other type of illicit materials. Instead, they discovered hundreds of counterfeit U.S. trade dollar coins (Figure 1). Authentic U.S. trade dollars (Figure 2) that were minted by the United States in the 1870s to serve as a medium of exchange in East Asian trade now command a hefty price on the coin-collecting circuit. If these fakes had passed customs—and many do— Chinese manufacturers would have made an ample profit as middlemen sold the coins in the United States. Lab tests later revealed these counterfeit coins were brass and coated with a thin layer of silver to mirror the look of real U.S. trade dollars. The original coins served as a medium of exchange in U.S. trade in Asia during the 1870s and 1880s because at that time China had no standardized silver coin. Before the creation of the trade dollar by the Coinage Act of 1873, American businessmen hoping to trade with China first had to purchase, at a premium, Mexican silver dollars, which were known, accepted and even coveted by Chinese merchants in treaty ports along the East coast of China. Reed, Advisor Ying Zhang Jennifer Siegel Steven Conn Copyrighted by Austin Lewis Dean 2016 Abstract This project examines the economic, political and diplomatic history of China and the United States by focusing on the monetary metals of silver and gold. In the 19th century, as many countries, including the United States, went on the gold standard, China remained one of the final places in the world that stayed on the silver standard. At the same time, the United States was a major producer of silver. From the end of the Qing dynasty (1644-1912), through the Beiyang period (1912-1927) and into the Nanjing Decade (1927-1937), various Chinese governments debated how to reform its monetary system: whether to stay on silver, to go on gold or to adopt some other monetary arrangement. This dissertation argues that the period between the 1870s and 1930s represents a cycle of monetary interactions between China and the United States. During this period, the chief issues was how to change the Chinese monetary system; after the mid-1930s, the chief issue became how to support and stabilize the new currency, the fabi. This project contributes, chronologically and thematically, to the growing but still small number of English-language works that focus on Chinese monetary history and addresses issues of interest to historians of China, historians of the United States and economic historians.
