Given the sheer quantity of fabric involved in a kite of this size, it Is probably easier to build from the inside out, as follows:

STEP 1: Sew the upper fins to the center panels, using 114" seams. Be sure that you sew one fin to the right side of one panel and one fin to the left side of the other panel. Saturday'scompetitions were moved to Sunday due to a lack of competitors. Seemsmost fliers came to fly for fun and relax and only a few heats were run on Sunday for the same reason. Instead the competition field was used for demonstrations by Mike Simmons and a score of manufacturers and Master Class fliers. Included was a historyof kiting show, single·, dual· and team ballets, quad·line, air wars (kite demolition derby), and lessons for the beginner flyer.

One flyer from Nova Scotia commented that his kite flying friends would not believe him in regards to the number of people and kites he had seen. He brought home View of theFestival.

A Once-In-A-Llfetlme Event At Niagara Falls

A team on the The Niagara Falls CentennialInternational Kite Festival met or exceeded all expectations when hundreds of fliers Canadian side retrieved the kite and hauled it in, while the from around North America and the rest of the world Japanese delegation quickly attached their kite train gathered May 15 through 17 at the great falls for a series of to the end of the line. Soon, another striking arch of kites one·in·a·lifetime kite events. was flying over the huge open gorge and white water.

Aneigh t·man team from Japan, led by JKA President Almost unnoticedat the other end of the park, the MasaakiModegi, led off Saturday morning by stretching a Toronto Kite Flyerswere patiently working the shifting train of 2000small Eddy kitesacross the RainbowBridge winds and winding river to reenact the Walsh flight in from the U.s. border to Canada. The kites had beenspecially what they called the "right" direction. prepared for the occasion and alternated between U.s., Canadian, and Japanese flag designs.

Winds were light at the designated launch time but true kiters never let conditions hamper their plans. The kites were lifted into position by a hundred volunteers. Then Tom Casselman put his not insubstantial mass behind a running launch and the train was pulled into a stunning arch, perfectly framing both the American Falls and Canadian Horseshoe Falls.

Later in the day, the kiters reassembledat WhirlpoolState Park to recreate the historical kite race across the Gorge. Nearly 150 years earlier, ten·year old Holman Walsh had flown a kite from the Canadianside to the American cliffs, in an effort to cross the rapids with a line that eventually would pull cables through the skies and form a huge suspension bridge. At the Centennial celebration, prevailing winds forced fliers to launch from the American side instead.

AKA Presiden t David Gomberg was one of the first to loft a kite into the lightbreeze. It promptly dipped into one of the Japanese kite team The tw

Other highlights of the festival included an exciting excursion aboard the Maid of the Mist boatrides into the heart of the Falls. The Maid also spunsored a "Flying Start" openingreception which featured presentationsby the Mayor and other local officials. On Monday morning, barrel kites by Martin Lester and Brooks Leffler were launched over the roaring water and mist of the Falls.

The Centennial Festival was organized by Meg and Bill Albers of Sky's The Limit. Principal sponsors included the Maid of the Mist, CocaCola of Buffalo, and Thrifty Rental Car.

Participants are hoping they won't have to wait another hundred years to repeat an event which lived up to its promotion as the premier North American ki te even t of 1992. • Q ...... 18 Kiting
