2021 Student Voice Conference

Information Pack Introduction The inaugural Student Voice Conference, presented by Xavier College, to be held on Friday the 23rd of July, aims to

promote student voice at Xavier and amongst partner schools and schools from across the Melbourne area as well as to invite students to reflect upon how they can lead authentically in today’s world.

It is also the aim of the Conference to model how student voice can operate, providing inspiration to participating schools and informing conversations about how student voice can best be realised in the future, particularly through discussions around contemporary issues facing students which will occur during the workshop sessions throughout the day.

The Student Voice Conference is to be held on Friday the 23rd of July 2021, at Xavier College’s Senior Campus (135 Barkers’ Rd, Kew) in the Eldon Hogan Performing Arts Centre from 8:55am to 3:15pm. All attendees are requested to arrive no later than 8:50am for registration.

The Conference will consist of three keynote speeches from Distinguished Guests and three workshops. A timetable for the day can be found on the following page.

2021 Student Voice Conference Information Pack Page | 3 Keynote Speakers Keynote speeches will be delivered by the following Distinguished Guests:

Her Excellency the Honourable Linda Dessau, AC, Governor of Victoria

Governor Dessau is the first female Governor of Victoria, having served in the position since the 1st of July 2015. Prior to being appointed Victoria’s 29th Governor, Her Excellency held appointments on the Victorian Magistrates’ Court (1986-1995) and the Family Court of Australia (1995-2013), having also practiced law as a barrister in both Victoria and overseas as Crown Counsel and Senior Crown Counsel in the Hong Kong Attorney-General’s chambers. Governor Dessau has been involved in a number of charitable organisations including as Patron of the Epilepsy Foundation and One Umbrella. Her Excellency was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2010 for services to family law and the community and promoted to Companion in 2017 for eminent service to the Victorian community.

The Honourable Justice Simon Steward

Justice Steward has been a Justice of the High Court of Australia since December 2020. Prior to his appointment to the High Court, His Honour served on the Federal Court from February 2018, also serving as Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal from June 2018. His Honour was admitted to practice in Victoria in 1991, was called to the Bar in 1999, where he was the President of the Tax Bar Association, being appointed one of Her Majesty’s Counsel in 2009. Justice Steward graduated Xavier College in 1985 and holds both a Bachelor of Laws and a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne and is a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne School of Law.

Lieutenant General John Frewen, DSC, AM

Lieutenant General Frewen is the Commanding Officer of Operation COVID-19 ASSIST, the ADF’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Lt Gen Frewen is also the Principal Deputy Director-General of the Australian Signals Directorate, a post which he has held since 2018. Lt Gen Frewen previously commanded the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, which was deployed in the Solomon Islands Crisis, as well as commanding Joint Task Force 633 and Combined Task Force 635. Lt Gen Frewen was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia in 2004 for his command of Joint Task Force 635 during Operation Anode. He also received the Distinguished Service Cross in 2019 for his command of Joint Task Force 633 on Operations OKRA and HIGHROAD. Lt Gen Frewen graduated Xavier College in 1982.

Henry Dudesin, Xavier College Prefect for Student Voice

Henry started at Xavier in Year 5 at the Burke Hall Campus and is now in his final year at the College. While at the Senior Campus, he has been an active member of the Student Voice Committee since its formation in 2019, including leading the writing and implementation of the Xavier College Student Code as well as leading the reviews of several College policies and guidelines. Henry received the Kooyong Student Prize in 2020 from the Hon. Josh Frydenberg MP, Treasurer of Australia, for general excellence, leadership and contribution to the community. He was appointed the College’s Prefect for Student Voice in October 2020.

Cognisant of the ongoing public health situation and the potential for further outbreaks and changes to restrictions, the Student Voice Conference will go ahead in a different form if restrictions necessitate such a change.

In the event of a lockdown or changes to density limits, the event will move to an online- only format, with keynote speeches occurring onsite at Xavier College and workshops occurring via Microsoft Teams or Zoom. In such an event, further information will be communicated closer to the date.

Regardless of the level of restrictions on the day, best practice infection control and COVID safety measures will be adopted. The venue will be deep-cleaned beforehand, hand sanitiser will be available in many locations in the venue and physical distancing will be maintained, when appropriate.
