  • Building a Collation Element Table for a Large Chinese Character Set in YES
Building a Collation Element Table for a Large Chinese Character Set in YES Xiaoheng Zhang1 and Xiaotong Li2 1 Department of Chinese and Bilingual Studies, Hong Kong Polytechnic University [email protected] 2 College of International Exchange, Shenzhen University [email protected] Abstract. YES is a simplified stroke-based method for sorting Chinese characters. It is free from stroke counting and grouping, and thus much faster and more accurate than the traditional method. This paper presents a collation element table built in YES for a large joint Chinese character set covering (a) all 20,902 characters of Unicode CJK Unified Ideographs, (b) all 11,408 characters in the Complete List of Chinese Characters Used by the Media in 2013, (c) all 13,000 plus characters in the latest versions of Xinhua Dictionary(v11) and Contemporary Chinese Dictionary(v6). Of the 20,902 Chinese characters in Unicode, 97.23% have one-to-one relationship with their stroke order codes in YES, comparing with 90.69% of the traditional method. Enhanced with the secondary and tertiary sorting levels of stroke layout and Unicode value, there is a guarantee of one-to-one relationship between the characters and collation elements. The collation element table has been successfully applied to sorting CC-CEDICT, a Chinese-English dictionary of over 112,000 word entries. Keywords: Chinese characters, collation, Unicode, YES 1 Introduction Collation, or determining the sorting order of strings of characters, is a key function in computer systems and a basic need of the human society. Whenever a list of texts—such as the records of a database and the entries of a dictionary—is presented to users, they are likely to want it in a sorted order so that they can easily and reliably find their target words.

According to the mathematical laws, the calligraphic lines can be represented as vectors that interact with each other. The Chinese writing as a cultural heritage whicn represents a multidimensional entity is described by graphemes as proto-complex numbers, the main task of which to transfer the dimensions of transcendental concepts into logical categories. Though the language of the text is Middle Mongolian, the text was written entirely in Chinese characters which were used to render Mongolian phonetically. The complete reconstruction of the underlying Middle Mongolian text has been a scholarly endeavour which mainly took place in the late 19th and early 20th centuries while research on particular issues of the text, its language and lexicon, is widely continued today. Modern tools for typing, editing and typesetting Chinese do not easily lend themselves for preparing research documentation due to two pecularities of the historical source: • Despite the limited set of characters used in in the Secret History (only about 520 characters), a considerable number of characters occurs vir- tually only in this text and was never coded in internationally used CJK character sets; • Special, small characters are used to modify the pronounciation of the main character to which they are attached.

  • Glyphs for Kangxi Radical 43
Glyph for U+2F2A KANGXI RADICAL LAME John H. Jenkins 25 April 2019 It recently came to our attention that the glyph for U+2F2A KANGXI RADICAL LAME ⼪ is inadvertently identical to the glyph for U+2E90 CJK RADICAL LAME THREE ⼪. Te glyph for the former is in turn intentionally identical to the glyph for U+5C22 ⼪. Among the alternate shapes for Kangxi radical 43 is , which is encoded as U+21BC1. It is clear that the separate encoding of U+2E90 was intended to capture the variation of ⼪ and . Furthermore, the glyph used for radical 43 in the Kangxi Dictionary itself is the glyph, not the ⼪ glyph. Kangxi gives ⼪ as an alternate shape. Tis also matches the glyph used on page 5 in the original proposal, SC2 N3213, dated 1998-10-28: https://www.unicode.org/L2/L1998/02n3213.pdf#page=5. Kangxi’s practice is the reverse of modern dictionaries, which universally give the ⼪ shape as the base shape and as an alternate (if they include alternates at all). It’s clear that it is inappropriate to use the same glyph for both characters. Tere are two alternatives: 1) Follow Kangxi. Tis would require changing the glyph for U+2F2A KANGXI RADICAL LAME to match that of U+21BC1. Tis also matches the glyph used on page 5 in the original proposal, SC2 N3213, dated 1998-10-28: https://www.unicode.org/L2/L1998/02n3213.pdf#page=5. A cross-reference to U+21BC1 should also be added to U+2F2A KANGXI RADICAL LAME. Te mapping in EquivalentUnifedIdeograph.txt for U+2F2A KANGXI RADICAL LAME should not need to be changed, because the compatibility mapping to U+5C22 should take priority over the cross-reference to U+21BC1.
