July 2017 Services The Feast of the Transfiguration Hiroshima Day 2 July Kept as St Thomas (Red) (The Third Sunday after Trinity) 8am Eucharist at Great Easton

9am 1662 Eucharist at Drayton

Preacher: Roy Cashmore 10.45am Eucharist at Medbourne with Baptism Guess Preacher and Celebrant The Revd Sonya Wratten ‘And Jesus was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, 9 July The Fourth Sunday after Trinity (Green) and his clothes became whiter than light.’ 9am 1662 Eucharist at Blaston Matthew 17: 2

10.45am Eucharist at Great Easton - Shoe Box Launch Service The Feast of the Transfiguration has long held significance for me, not least because in a previous role, I was responsible for a church which formed part of the Parish of the 16 July The Fifth Sunday after Trinity (Green) Transfiguration. As someone who was involved in the Diocesan former link with Japan, I 9am 1662 Eucharist at Bringhurst was also conscious of the significance of the date of the feast. August 6th is also Hiroshima 10.45am Eucharist at Medbourne Day, marking the destruction of the city by the first atom bomb. Shortly after the event, 4pm Rehearsal for Evensong at Great Easton American journalist John Hersey travelled to the city and carried out interviews with a 6pm Evensong at Great Easton to commemorate the number of survivors. The work remains the critical text for anyone seeking to grapple with 200th Anniversary of the death of Jane Austen the horrifying event which saw 100, 000 of the 250, 000 population of the city killed instantly, a further 100,000 injured, and 65 of the city’s 150 doctors killed. Common to 23 July The Sixth Sunday after Trinity (Green) their harrowing accounts, those who lived through the event and were able to recount 8am 1662 Eucharist at Medbourne their stories tell of a flash which outshone the sun. Hiroshima may be understood as an 9am 1662 Eucharist at Stockerston anti-Transfiguration. If one event points us to the glory of God in face of the transfigured 10.45am Eucharist at Great Easton with Baptism Christ, the other event points us to the human destruction. One might seek to understand Hiroshima in a pragmatic way, as an event which, in the context of a brutal war, forced the 30 July The Seventh Sunday after Trinity (Green) surrender of the enemy and thus potentially saved further lives which might have been lost 10.45am United Eucharist at Bringhurst in protracted conflict. There may be some truth in this. But what I find more difficult are Guess Preacher and Celebrant The Revd Julie Ann Heath the attempts to see Hiroshima in the context of what appears to be Divinely – sanctioned killing in the Old Testament. The truth is that I struggle with approaches of these kinds. The scale of the loss, Hersey’s heart-rending eyewitness accounts, my experience of meet- Wednesday Morning Eucharist Services ing Japanese people whose families were affected, and indeed of meeting British Prisoners St Andrews Church, Great Easton of the Japanese lead me to the conclusion that, there has to be another way of thinking about this. Where hate, terror attacks, and inhumanity, still challenge us, our world needs 5 July 10.30am not to seek blessing for that which threatens life and human flourishing but rather, more 12 July 10.30am than ever, to hear the words of Jesus in the Beatitudes:

19 July 10.30am But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 26 July 10.30am Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. …and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful,

ALL WELCOME as your Father also is merciful. Luke 6: 27-28, 35-36

With the main holiday season well and truly upon us we all need to have some form of break. th Wednesday 19 July 2017 In the garden there is still plenty to do, in the vegetable garden your courgettes are actively growing. It’s best to pick them while they are young and tender to eat, to me they taste wonderful if lightly fried in butter, they do not freeze well as they contain a lot of Cars to leave the Village Hall at 6pm water. 24 9 A letter of thanks from Roy Cashmore…

Please accept sincere apologies for this belated note of thanks.

How can I start to thank you all for bring part of the celebration on 29th April? It was wonderful to see so many at the Eucharist to join me in thanks for 50 years as a Reader. Thank you too to the choir and to those who prepared the church, especially to Anne Wallis for the beautiful flower arrangement. I have written to Bishop Norman to thank him for his part on behalf of us all. Finally I thank Fr. Stephen and Julia for all their efforts in turning my draft order of service into the splendid form we used.

Then there was the buffet lunch. Thank you to all who provided such a wonderful selection of food. Margaret joins me in expressing gratitude and appreciation. She said that if we had had professional caterers, there would not have been anything like the variety (and, we suspect the quality). You were all so generous and I'm sure many of you would qualify to rake part in the great British bake off. Friends from Uppingham described it as 'amazing' and compared it to a wedding feast! Thank you all very, very much.

A big thank you, too, to those who helped to prepare the hall, lay the tables, serve dine, do the clearing up, and the washing up. Many thanks for the invaluable advice, support and help from Mary H-M and the marvellous Great Easton team who work their magic behind the scenes with the backing of those from the other churches in the parish. It was a wonderful team effort by people from all over the parish and I can't thank you all enough for making the day one that I and, I hope, lots of others will remember and treasure for many years to come. The Meadowes family were prosperous farmers of Drayton. When John Meadowes died in 1720 an inventory was taken of his possessions (we have retained the original spelling and punctuation).

John Barwell, John Hall, Abell Meadows, Thomas Barwell

This inventory gives us a picture of a farm in the early 18th century. It tells us how many rooms in the house and their contents. It was usual at that time to have a bed in the parlour. The family were maturing cheese and brewing their own beer.

The inventory also describes the farm. It is 20th August. The wheat and barley have been harvested and stored in the barn; the hay cut and stacked in the yard. The peas are still in the field – they would be harvested as dried peas and used for peas pottage and soup, but mainly to feed stock. The farmer milked fifteen cows, so plenty of milk for cheese making.

1720 was before farmland was enclosed so John Meadowes’s land would be strips in the open fields.
