As someone who was involved in the Diocesan former link with Japan, I 9am 1662 Eucharist at Bringhurst was also conscious of the significance of the date of the feast. August 6th is also Hiroshima 10.45am Eucharist at Medbourne Day, marking the destruction of the city by the first atom bomb. Shortly after the event, 4pm Rehearsal for Evensong at Great Easton American journalist John Hersey travelled to the city and carried out interviews with a 6pm Evensong at Great Easton to commemorate the number of survivors. The work remains the critical text for anyone seeking to grapple with 200th Anniversary of the death of Jane Austen the horrifying event which saw 100, 000 of the 250, 000 population of the city killed instantly, a further 100,000 injured, and 65 of the city’s 150 doctors killed. Common to 23 July The Sixth Sunday after Trinity (Green) their harrowing accounts, those who lived through the event and were able to recount 8am 1662 Eucharist at Medbourne their stories tell of a flash which outshone the sun. Hiroshima may be understood as an 9am 1662 Eucharist at Stockerston anti-Transfiguration. If one event points us to the glory of God in face of the transfigured 10.45am Eucharist at Great Easton with Baptism Christ, the other event points us to the human destruction. One might seek to understand Hiroshima in a pragmatic way, as an event which, in the context of a brutal war, forced the 30 July The Seventh Sunday after Trinity (Green) surrender of the enemy and thus potentially saved further lives which might have been lost 10.45am United Eucharist at Bringhurst in protracted conflict. There may be some truth in this. But what I find more difficult are Guess Preacher and Celebrant The Revd Julie Ann Heath the attempts to see Hiroshima in the context of what appears to be Divinely – sanctioned killing in the Old Testament. The truth is that I struggle with approaches of these kinds. The scale of the loss, Hersey’s heart-rending eyewitness accounts, my experience of meet- Wednesday Morning Eucharist Services ing Japanese people whose families were affected, and indeed of meeting British Prisoners St Andrews Church, Great Easton of the Japanese lead me to the conclusion that, there has to be another way of thinking about this. Where hate, terror attacks, and inhumanity, still challenge us, our world needs 5 July 10.30am not to seek blessing for that which threatens life and human flourishing but rather, more 12 July 10.30am than ever, to hear the words of Jesus in the Beatitudes: 19 July 10.30am But I say unto you which hear, Love your enemies, do good to them which hate you, 26 July 10.30am Bless them that curse you, and pray for them which despitefully use you. …and your reward shall be great, and ye shall be the children of the Highest: for he is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil. Be ye therefore merciful, ALL WELCOME as your Father also is merciful. Luke 6: 27-28, 35-36 The Revd.
