THE EPHEMERA JOURNAL VOLUME 18, NUMBER 2 JANUARY 2016 Bicycle Trade Catalogs BY TALIA S. COUTIN Before the ‘Bicycle Boom’ the bicycle was a luxury item with limited reach but, by 1896, America was home to an estimated four million “wheelmen” and “wheelwomen.” How and why did bicycles take the country by storm? The ‘Golden Age of the Bicycle’ coincided with the ‘Golden Age of Advertising Art.’ Austin Charles Bates, a pioneering adman of the time, estimated that bicycle firms spent more than one billion dollars in 1897. “And yet it paid,” he wrote. “Everyone was bicycle crazy...” Images of wheelmen and wheelwomen appeared everywhere in print, including on products that had nothing to do with bicycling. They graced posters and postcards, magazine covers and cigarette labels, sheet music and card decks – advertising bicycling, if not a particular bicycle brand. Through trade catalogs, companies tried to distinguish their brands with clever copy and alluring graphic designs. Companies spoke directly to consumers, offering them commercial art they could keep. Examining the material, visual, and textual aspects of catalogs from two of America’s leading bicycle manufacturers, the Overman Wheel Company and the Pope Manufacturing Company, reveals how advertising strategies developed between 1881 and 1899 to whet the consumer appetite for bicycles. However, the idea that craftsmanship might, at its best, result in something that others instinctively call ‘art’ has always remained the unspoken goal. Robert Dalton Harris, Diane DeBlois, David Margolis, and Jean Moss The Contribution of Ephemera Dealers Robert Dalton Harris and Diane DeBlois of aGatherin’, and David Margolis and Jean Moss of Margolis and Moss, explore the relationship between dealers and the libraries and museums that purchase ephemera from them. The two couples who, for over three decades, have specialized in handling ephemera within the rare book world, are from different backgrounds and have divergent strengths, yet agree philosophically on both the importance of ephemera and the complementary role dealers can have with librarians and curators in building collections. In describing their passions, they hope to connect with the collector inside the library and archives profession, as well as to illuminate what it is they actually do as ephemerists, capi- talizing upon the quotidian. Why would an antiquarian choose to specialize in ephemera? Robert Dalton Harris, as a Garbage Hound: My life as a collector began in the hospital—not the one in Salt Lake City where I was born, but five years later in Oregon when I got polio. My neighbor in the children’s ward was totally absorbed in his stamp collection—so I asked my mother about stamps, and we immediately found half a dozen different ones on envelopes from her correspondence. These we purloined, soaked, and counted. Many years later, my grandparents returned to me a letter I wrote them that Christmas, in which I painstakingly accounted for the thirteen stamps I had by then amassed. I was off and running. My mother invited me to take any duplicates I could find from her own col- lection—I remember that there were two—and subsequently we collected together, but in separate albums: gathering from the incoming mail, from gifts, from the post office, from approval selections, and “big bag missionary” mixtures—until my collec- tion exceeded hers and, it was agreed, I became the proud possessor of both. -

Popp Although the VCR is often written about in scholarly literature, it is usually discussed in relation to Hollywood videotapes and rental stores. This study fills a gap in the current literature by presenting a significant history of the VCR in relation to TV during the period regularly referred to as the VCR’s first decade, 1975 to 1985. Specifically, this study is a look at the divergent discourses of the TV industry and the public opinion of TV viewership during this early era that offer insight into how we have come to contemporarily conceptualize TV. -

Collectible Pipe-related Ephemera: Here Today, Not Necessarily Gone Tomorrow! By Ben Rapaport To crossover-collectors, this may be for you! There’s lots of collectible stuff in circulation related to tobacco pipes. As Marian Klamkin in 1981(Collectibles: A Compendium) reported: “There are a lot of specialties within this broad field of collecting. They range from tobacco tins to hand-carved pipes, from objects that had no original intrinsic value to things that were very expensive when new.” And among those objects that had no intrinsic value are ephemera, a word many use, but not often understood. Derived from the Greek, ephemeron, meaning short-lived or transitory; the plural ephemera most often refers to printed matter produced for a specific purpose, then discarded when that purpose is achieved. Examples include sheet music, advertisements, postcards, tickets, stock certificates, posters, booklets, brochures, pamphlets, billheads, ledgers, scrapbooks, photographs, and myriad other items, all of them related in a thematic collection by subject, period of history, or other interest. You can get a general idea of what some folks collect by reading “How I Collect” (ephemerasociety.org). This essay is about pipe-related stuff generally classified as ephemeral, e.g., written or printed materials (not books!) not envisioned or intended for long-term preservation or retention. Where to begin? I focus on printed matter—to the exclusion of premium catalogs and store coupons—and a few related collectibles. (Pipe and tobacco factory and retail tobacconist catalogs are the premier reference jewels for a collector, but a detailed discussion of these exceeds the scope of this narrative.) Here’s a laundry list of all the mediums used to promote tobacco products at one time or another. -

The ephemera Journal Volume 14, Number 3 may 2012 Devilish Antecedents By Tina Wray Images of the Devil were popular with the designers of late 19th century American advertising illustration. Whether invoking literary allusion (Dante, Washington Irving, Goethe, Poe) or Satanic punishment (the Krampus of Christmas) illustrators tended to agree on the color red, and to use one or more of the identifiers: horns, tail, snaked tongue, wings, pitchfork. This rather late personification of Satan can be traced to roots in several ancient cultures. And the inclusion of Satan in the equation that includes humans, God, and the Devil – echoed in Victorian/American imagery – is theologically and culturally sound. How did Satan morph from the innocuous hassatan in the Hebrew Bible to the chaos monster Satan in the New Testament? In the Old Testament, the word (usually appearing with the definite article ha, so meaning the satan and implying a function rather than a proper name)1 appears less than a dozen times and is used as a way to refer to an enemy or opponent. Thesaurus of Ephemera Terms Barbara Morris Centre for Ephemera Studies November 2013 Department of Typography & Graphic Communication University of Reading Thesaurus of ephemera terms 1 Introduction This thesaurus is a project of the Centre for Ephemera Studies, based in the Department of Typography & Graphic Communication at the University of Reading. It is in some measure a follow up to the publication of the Encyclopedia of Ephemera, and had its inception in the realisation that the Encyclopedia, written by Maurice Rickards and edited by Michael Twyman, Amoret Tanner and Sally de Beaumont, was being used in ways for which it was not intended. The anticipated audience for this thesaurus is not primarily individual collectors but museums and other organisations which are becoming increasingly interested in ordering and cataloguing their ephemera. It is hoped that it may help in answering the question “What should I call this?” Work on the thesaurus has been based on the collections of the Centre for Ephemera Studies particularly the Maurice Rickards Collection which forms the basis of the Centre’s material. Rickards believed that studying ephemera could contribute to an understanding both of social history and of the development of printing and graphic design; and the items in the collection illustrate this, covering a wide range of subjects and genres, rather than focussing on large collections of specific types of artefact. 2 Scope 2.1 Genre/format terms Genre / format terms form the basic content of the thesaurus. They include not only printed ephemera but manuscript, typed and some born digital items. Digital equivalents already exist for many of the categories defined here, and no doubt many more will be produced in the future, but the thesaurus does not include digital items for which there are no hard copy equivalents. -

Although our bylaws generally limit board membership to two terms, I initially served two years of a resigning member’s term, was elected for two terms, and served as Vice-President and then President for the last six years.
