They are treated as a collection and organized topically to facilitate access without cataloging each piece individually. Nonetheless, some items had been cataloged before this collection was established in its current form. These catalog records remain in the LSU Libraries catalog and a unique identifying number for each record has been included in the container list of this finding aid. Simply enter the unique number as a keyword search in the LSU Libraries catalog to call up the record. Items previously accessioned as manuscript collections likewise bear their unique Mss. Numbers. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The LLMVC Ephemera Collection consists of pamphlets, brochures, handbills, leaflets, broadsides, programs, clippings, maps, and other printed materials of an ephemeral nature that concern Louisiana and the Lower Mississippi Valley. Social Life, Culture, Religion, History & Arts Subgroup VII. Travel & Tourism Page 4 of 61 LLMVC EPHEMERA COLLECTION SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, LSU LIBRARIES SUBGROUP DESCRIPTIONS Subgroup I. Politics, Government & Law The first subgroup contains ephemera on political affairs, government actions and services, and legal matters. These include political addresses, campaign ephemera, political party literature, civil affairs literature from various parishes and cities (especially Baton Rouge and New Orleans), and several reports of parish public welfare departments from 1937. Subgroup II. War & Military Affairs The second subgroup consists of ephemera concerning Louisiana’s participation in wars from 1812 onward, as well as other military and veterans’ affairs. While it includes some material concerning the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the World Wars, and twentieth-century military bases, the great majority of the items concern the Civil War. Subgroup III. Economics, Agriculture, Commerce & Industry The third subgroup contains ephemera on business, commerce, and industry in Louisiana, as well as the economic aspects of agriculture. It includes agricultural and commercial promotional pamphlets for Louisiana and New Orleans, commercial ephemera for several Louisiana cities, cards and leaflets for business enterprises in New Orleans and elsewhere in Louisiana, and ephemera on the economic aspects of the sugar industry in Louisiana. Subgroup IV. Science, Technology & Medicine The fourth subgroup encompasses ephemera on technology, architecture, engineering, medicine, and other scientific pursuits. It includes items for medical and scientific societies, hospitals, public health matters, and engineering accomplishments. Subgroup V. Social, Civic & Educational Organizations The fifth subgroup consists of ephemera from specific organizations created for social, civic, or educational purposes. They include social clubs, civic affairs and improvement societies, private schools and universities, New Orleans Carnival krewes, men’s lodges and clubs, ethnic organizations, mutual aid and benevolent societies, orphanages, literary and theatrical clubs, and philharmonic societies. Files are arranged alphabetically by the name of the organization. Political parties and partisan political organizations are filed in Subgroup I. Churches and professional artistic groups are in Subgroup VI, although some church-sponsored schools are included in Subgroup V because of their educational function. Subgroup VI. Social Life, Culture, Religion, History & Arts The sixth subgroup encompasses ephemera on the social, cultural, religious, and artistic life of Louisiana. This includes death and funeral notices; ephemera on artistic, musical, literary, and theatrical exhibitions and performances; pamphlets from individual churches or wider religious Page 5 of 61 LLMVC EPHEMERA COLLECTION SPECIAL COLLECTIONS, LSU LIBRARIES observances; announcements and tickets for sporting events, fairs, and balls; and ephemera on women in Louisiana. It also includes articles and ephemera on historical subjects, especially the history of New Orleans and anniversaries of the Louisiana Purchase. Subgroup VII. Travel & Tourism The seventh subgroup consists primarily of ephemera encouraging tourism in Louisiana and Mississippi, principally brochures, brief guidebooks, and maps. Most of this material is organized by the name of the city or region concerned.
