Holding and listening, containing and never giving them up are practical solutions for all children, but all the more for those who have never experienced a stable and loving home. This is something that every field psychologist knows well. Positive attachment and supportive human communication are at the basis of healthy development for individuals and communities. Find a way of offering neglected chil- dren the experience of love and they will respond because love remains foundational for what we humans are. I am delighted that we have been able to study the language of love that Kids Company makes available to some of the most vulnerable children and young people in the UK. This report systematises the work of the charity and pulls together a unique body of evidence about the experience of its staff and volunteers as they reach out and engage children and young people in need. The study has produced an outline of the principles, forms of delivery and interfaces established by Kids Company. We now understand what makes them unique and what makes them effective in meeting the needs of their clients. We understand in particular that focusing on the needs of deprived children requires a different institutional culture that privileges local realities over excessive managerial concerns. I am grateful to Camila Batmanghelidjh for inviting us into Kids Company and open- ing the space for this research and to my co-author Natalia Concha, who managed the project with great professional acumen. Her work has been essential for its successful completion. Our work relied on the good will and insights of staff and volunteers at Kids Company, who generously gave us their time and participated in the research. Kids Company (officially Keeping Kids Company) was an incorporated and registered charity founded in 1996. The charity operated in London, Liverpool and Bristol. 3. In June 2015, Kids Company reported that they were working with 36,000 children and families, 97% of whom had self-referred, with 600 staff and 11,000 volunteers. 1 4. On 5 August 2015, Kids Company ceased operating and announced that it would begin the process of placing itself into compulsory liquidation. On 20 August 2015, a winding up order was issued by the High Court and the Official Receiver was appointed as the liquidator of the company. Events leading up to the closure of Kids Company: 5. On 22 May 2015, the Department of Education contacted the Strategic Director in his role as statutory Director of Children’s Services (DCS), and a number of other DCSs at other Local Authorities, to advise confidentially that they had been informed that it was possible that Kids Company may cease operating very soon due to financial difficulties. The purpose of the contact was to request that DCSs prepared for that possibility in order to mitigate the impact on children, young people and families receiving services from Kids Company.
