Charles H. Rivkin Assistant Secretary, Bureau of Economic and Business Affairs, State Department Appointment: 04/15/2014 Charles H. Rivkin currently serves as the Assistant Secretary of State for Economic and Business Affairs. He was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on February 11, 2014, and was sworn into office by U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on April 15, 2014. Prior to his appointment, Rivkin served for more than four years as the United States Ambassador to France and Monaco. He was the youngest Ambassador in nearly 60 years to serve as the senior U.S. representative in France, and his confirmation as Assistant Secretary marks the first time a non-career bilateral ambassador has led the EB bureau. Prior to his government service, Ambassador Rivkin worked in the media sector for over 20 years where he served as President and CEO of award-winning entertainment companies such as The Jim Henson Company and Wildbrain. Rivkin helped engineer the sale of The Jim Henson Company to EM.TV in 2000 for nearly $1 billion. His contribution to the television landscape has influenced generations of viewers, and in 2009 Rivkin was named one of the 100 Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company. Ambassador Rivkin spent his early childhood in Luxembourg, Senegal, and The Gambia where his father, William R. Rivkin, was the United States Ambassador under Presidents John Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson. In honor of his father, Ambassador Rivkin and his family have proudly presented the U.S. State Department’s annual Rivkin Award, since 1968, encouraging “intellectual courage and constructive dissent” among officers in the U.S. Foreign Service. The award was created in part with the help of Charles Rivkin's godfather, Hubert H. Humphrey. Ambassador Rivkin received his bachelor's degree from Yale University in 1984, graduating with distinction in political science and international relations. He received his M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1988. .

But in the face of difficulty, the members of the USC Gould School of Law – from alumni and students, to faculty and staff – have risen to the occasion. They have answered the call to help their clients, the community and, of course, one another, under extraordinary circumstances. I hope this magazine serves as a proud reminder of the strength and perseverance of our Gould Trojan Family. Among the stories in this special issue, we highlight the inspiring work — accomplished remotely — of our clinics and their students to help small businesses navigate new pandemic-related policies; help a brain cancer patient at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles reunite with his parents from Mexico; and help provide legal guidance to a nonprofit startup that distributes donated personal protective equipment to hospitals nationwide. In addition, we spotlight the role of Gould alumni in contributing to Keck Medicine of USC’s Care for the Caregiver program, which supports health care workers on the front lines. We are also excited to share news of two transformative student scholarship gifts, each topping $1 million. David Howard ( JD 1970) and his wife, Susan, established a new scholarship complementing the support provided through the C. David Molina First-Generation Professionals Program. The new Rosalie and Harold Rae Brown Scholarship includes funding toward merit scholarships for law student applicants, with positive consideration given to students who self-identify as African American.
