Adventure travel appealing THE TIMES FEBRUARY 4, 2011 Adventure travel is a type of tourism, involving exploration or travel to remote, exotic and possibly hostile areas. Adventure tourism is rapidly growing in popularity, as tourists seek different kinds of vacations. The widespread appeal of adventure travel television programs such as The Amazing Race and Mantracker, have also inspired many Canadians to spread their travelling wings beyond the all-inclusives. According to the U.S. based Adventure Travel Trade Association, adventure travel may be any tourist activity, including two of the following three components: a physical activity, a cultural exchange or interaction and engagement with nature. Adventure tourism gains much of its excitement by allowing travellers to step outside of their comfort zone. This may be from experiencing culture shock or through the performance of acts, that require significant effort and involve some degree of risk (real or perceived) and/or physical danger. This may include activities such as mountaineering, trekking, bungee jumping, mountain biking, rafting, zip-lining and rock climbing. Some obscure forms of adventure travel include disaster and ghetto tourism. Other rising forms of adventure travel include social and jungle tourism. Access to inexpensive consumer technology, with respect to Global Positioning Systems, flashpacking, social networking and photography, have increased the worldwide interest in adventure travel. The interest in independent adventure travel has also increased as more specialist travel websites emerge offering previously niche locations and sports. Adventure travel, tours and vacation packages deliver experiences such as trekking in Peru, backpacking in Costa Rica, taking a safari in Kenya or exploring the pyramids of Egypt.

A comparative case study analysis Elizabeth Joy Matthews (ABSTRACT) Ecotourism has emerged as one of the fastest-growing sectors of the tourism market, influenced primarily by public demand for more environmentally responsible tourism. When planned properly, it has been asserted that ecotourism can integrate conservation of biodiversity with socio-economic development of local communities. For this reason, many governments and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) are eager to develop ecotourism in protected areas in order to maximize these benefits. However, ecotourism can have significant negative impacts when poorly planned and managed including severe environmental degradation, negative cultural changes and decreased welfare of individuals or communities. Ecotourism should not be regarded as a panacea for harmonizing rural development with environmental conservation until the industry’s influence on developing countries has been thoroughly analyzed. This paper shall explore whether ecotourism has proven to be an effective tool for integrating conservation and development. Through the examination of existing literature pertaining to ecotourism, I investigate the environmental, economic and social impacts of 14 ecotourism development projects in six developing countries: Belize, Costa Rica, Dominica, Ecuador, Indonesia, Nepal and Peru.

A total of one hundred and two respondents participated in this study and the survey questionnaires were distributed from November 2013 to January 2014. This study analysed visitor experiences based on Pine and Gilmore's four realms of experience and the experience pyramid by Tarssanen and Kylänen. The theory also included nature based tourism. The results of the study show that Chitwan National Park is a unique product and the satisfaction level of the visitors was good.

While eco- tourism has traditionally focused on Third World ÔundisturbedÕ protected lands, it has also been developed in their First World equivalents (i.e., old-growth forests) as well as in First World sites of past resource extraction and in places where current agricul- tural practices maintain cherished cultural landscapes. Forest County, Pennsylvania, a timber-dependent area, sought to diversify its economy by developing ecotourism based on its unique Allegheny hardwood forests, which are produced by timber harvesting. This ecotourism would encourage amenity-based, locally-driven economic development and maintain timber harvesting. While govern- ment and foundation supported ecotourism development efforts in areas dependent on resource extraction have incorporated some of ecotourismÕs ideals, these operations have had mixed success. Such isolated areas, which have traditionally drawn visitors inde- pendently engaging in traditional outdoor recreation activities, have not been able to draw enough customers willing to pay for nat- ural and cultural history tours. If ecotourism is to be successful, such areas may need further government support and destination branding to increase name recognition in order to counter the global orientation of the nature tour industry.
