The digesters are fed with 55,000 ton of manure (7000 ton manure from their own farm) and 35,000 ton of food industry waste per year. The digestate is treated in different steps, including a nutrient recuperation step based on membrane filtration. Therefore, the operator won the Ivan Tolpe Prijs (Manure Processing Award) in 2019 with the NPirrK project. Arbio is also an as- sociated plant in the Systemic project. Biogas Bree Biogas Bree (Bree, Belgium) is biogas plant in the province of Limburg, receiving pig slurry from pig farmers in a radius of 20 km. The manure is 30% of the total amount of feedstock yearly processed. All animal manure is treated in a separate line without contamination with the anae- robic digestion of organic biological waste. The treatment capacity 85.000 tonnes/year. The heat from the CHP is used to evaporate the manure and to dry the digestate. Biogas Bree is an outreach plant in the Systemic project and is looking for new nutrient recovery technologies. During the visit, more information will be given on the planned fluid bed dryer and the unique granulation process. The latter offers new market possibilities of the treated digestate. Biogas Bree is also involved in the UNIR project, looking for the break through of ammoniumsulfate from biogas installations and air scrubbers as replacement for mineral fertilizers, by means of central storage, homoginisation, filtration and optimalisation of the application technique.     Building “knowledge cluster” in Flanders Flanders, Belgium SYNTHESIS The Knowledge Cluster is an ERDF co-financed project implemented by the i-City Living Lab based in Hasselt in the region of Flanders, Belgium. Founded in 2004, i-City is a fully- fledged, internationally recognised living lab with a focus on testing, demonstrating and valorising innovative applications and services for a mobile user. To support those activities i-City develops and maintains a state of the art infrastructure (both hardware and software), a large population of dedicated test users, an experienced staff and a unique ecosystem facilitating collaboration. As a living lab one of the objectives is to help to bridge the gap between research and market, developing and testing applications, which correspond to a real market demand and meet the needs of society. The laboratory closely cooperates with companies, working together with end-users who test potential future mobile applications. The cities of Hasselt and Leuven are converted into experimentation environments for future mobile applications with some 650 users equipped with personal handheld devices (PDAs) testing new applications in real life situations. As a living lab is based on the open innovation paradigm a key success factor is the mobilisation of stakeholders interested in innovative application, services and products. There are several instruments to mobilize those stakeholders: one-to-one meetings, conferences, a community website, working groups, networking, promotion during events, etc. All those instruments can be used to gather innovative ideas. However, longitudinal studies on the long-term use and effect of regional designing are lacking. This paper investigates the impacts of regional designing in the complex and fragmented setting of a cross-border region. Since the late 1980s, the region was subject to four regional design episodes that each had different impacts: from a new perception of the region to initiating regional collaboration and effects on the Dutch professional debate. The study showed that regional designing is a powerful means to overcome difficulties that arise from the fragmented setting of a cross-border region. Moreover, it revealed that the context in which regional designing is embedded determines in what areas regional designing will have its impact. Both plans and people are important in the transference of regional design outcomes to other planning arenas and conditions, such as status and available funding, improve the chances of transference. Meijer, Literature of the Low Countries vii Preface In any definition of terms, Dutch literature must be taken to mean all literature written in Dutch, thus excluding literature in Frisian, even though Friesland is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in the same way as literature in Welsh would be excluded from a history of English literature. Similarly, literature in Afrikaans (South African Dutch) falls outside the scope of this book, as Afrikaans from the moment of its birth out of seventeenth-century Dutch grew up independently and must be regarded as a language in its own right. De mijn beschikte over een uitgebreide houtvoorraad, die diep onder de grond als ondersteuningsmateriaal dienst deed. 4 | BE-MINE | HOUTPARK | BERINGEN BERINGEN | HOUTPARK | BE-MINE | 5 VOORWOORD De mijnsite van Beringen omvat 100.000 m² aan bestaand gebouwenpatrimonium. Daarmee is het de grootste industriële erfgoedsite in Vlaanderen en uniek in Europa. Van alle overige mijnsites in Limburg is het de enige site waar het industriële hart van de mijn werd bewaard. De mijnsite is gelegen in het kleinstedelijk gebied van de derde grootste stad van Limburg en aan de voet van twee terrils. Onder de noemer be-MINE wordt de site nu herbestemd als een toeristisch-recreatief project. Stedelijke functies als wonen, werken en winkelen worden daarbij evenwichtig met elkaar vervlochten. Met het masterplan voor de herbestemming van 32 hectare mijnterrein, krijgt de historische locatie een waardige, waardevolle en eigentijdse invulling. Het masterplan voorziet in een belangrijke wooncomponent, een nieuwe wijk met de naam ‘Houtpark’. Anderzijds voorziet het masterplan ook een belevingscomponent in en rond de beschermde gebouwen. Daar staan toerisme, cultuur, ontspanning en winkelplezier centraal. Het project be-MINE werd door de Vlaamse Regering als toeristisch hefboomproject voor de regio erkend en kan genieten van de steun van de provincie Limburg en de stad Beringen. Een aantal stedelijke functies zoals het nieuwe zwembad ‘Mijn zwemparadijs’ en het Toeristisch Onthaal Limburg vinden er onderdak.
