Vincent (Jean-Paul Rouve) runs "Ces Jours Heureux," a camp for kids in rural France, and as he gears up for the summer season, he has to round up a new staff of counse-lors to look after the campers. While the campers have to contend with bad weather, worse food and extended periods of boredom, the supposedly more mature counselors hardly fare much better, and occasionally face visits from the cops over the camp's various safety violations. Mademoiselle Paradis | Thursday May 23 Vienna, 1777. Maria Theresia ("Resi") Paradis, 18 years old, is blind, and a pianist of remarkable talent. Resi lost her eyesight literally overnight when she was three. After countless failed medical experiments, her overprotective parents seek out a controversial "miracle doctor," Franz Anton Mes-mer, as their last hope for a cure. Resi moves into the estate of the doctor and his wife, where in the company of other patients she tastes personal freedom for the first time. Resi soon notices that as her sight is beginning to return, her musical virtuosity is declining. She becomes aware that being part of society as a seeing person comes at too high a price if it can mean the loss of her inner world of music. Son of Saul | June 27 The year is 1944 at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. Saul Auslander (Géza Röhrig), a member of the camp’s Sonderkommando—prisoners forced to help the Nazis exterminate Jews, thereby delaying their own deaths for a few months—walks toward the camera from far off in the woods before finally coming into focus in the center of the frame. From there, Hungarian director and co-writer László Nemes follows Saul as he goes about his daily work herding new arrivals toward the undressing room and into the gas chamber. They’d been promised hot meals and well-paying jobs, something Saul has heard countless times before. It should rather say “It is unimaginable, therefore, I must imagine, in spite of all.” – Georges DidiHuberman1 A horror story, the face is a horror story – Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari2 In August 2015, French philosopher and art historian Georges DidiHuberman wrote an open letter to Hungarian director, László Nemes: Dear László Nemes, Your film, Son of Saul, is a monster. A necessary, coherent, beneficial, innocent monster.3 What are we to make of these opening lines? How does one create a monster? Written in the immediate aftermath of DidiHuberman’s viewing of the film, the letter is an intimate and emotional tribute to the director’s harrowing representation of extreme human misery set inside the gas chambers at AuschwitzBirkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1944. Nemes adds his voice to a long and contested history of philosophical debates concerning the relationship between the Holocaust and the status of the cinematic image. How can cinema do justice to representing the Holocaust? What role can images play, without trivialising or sentimentalising an event that is located at the limit of representation? Against this hegemonic line of thought, the discourse emphasising Holocaust unrepresentability has drawn increasing scrutiny, with younger generations of philosophers such as Georges DidiHuberman questioning the absolutism of the prohibition of representation.

  • 374 András Koerner
374 book reviews András Koerner How They Lived: The Everyday Lives of Hungarian Jews, 1867–1940. Budapest and New York: Central European University Press, 2015. “The Holocaust over the years has become an abstraction. For me, it’s more a face, a human face. Let’s not forget this face,” Hungarian director László Nemes said when he received a Golden Globe Award for his debut film, Son of Saul, in 2016. In Son of Saul, the camera never leaves the side of Saul Ausländer, a Hun- garian Jew, and a member of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz, forced by the Nazis to perform crucial tasks in the extermination process: guiding Jews into the gas chambers, removing the bodies, bringing them to the crematoria, and disposing of their ashes in the nearby river. On Saul’s face, which remains expressionless except for the smallest signs of humanity that his existence as a Sonderkommando allows for, we see reflected the horrors that surround him. Through witnessing the fate, and the face, of one man, the viewer is en- couraged to imagine the vastness of his suffering and that of his fellow Jews; a vastness that is so great that it cannot be represented, except perhaps through close attention to the individual and, ultimately, irreplaceable human face. In How They Lived: The Everyday Lives of Hungarian Jews, 1867–1940, a book of black and white photographs and accompanying text, it is the human face that jumps at the reader from literally every page. In fact, András Koerner’s desire to document the lives of Hungarian Jews stems from the sadness that has remained with him since the Holocaust, and the fact that so much of the world in which he grew up has vanished.

Sofie Lakmaker, De geschiedenis van mijn seksualiteit (‘The History of My Sexuality’) 1/12 Das Mag, 2021 223 pp. Translated by Emma Rault [email protected] My Mother Is a Patrilineal Jew My mother always said: ‘We don’t have rich friends, they just bought a house at the right time.’ My parents bought their house at exactly the right time: on Jacob Obrechtstraat, number 7—right in the middle of Oud-Zuid. Someone once said that there are two types of people in Amsterdam Oud-Zuid: the nouveau riche and Jewish intellectuals. We weren’t nouveau riche, she kept telling me, and we weren’t Jewish—my mother was only a patrilineal Jew, and when I asked my father at one point what an intellectual was, he said: ‘The only true intellectual is Wilfred Oranje.’ Wilfred Oranje, I learned, was ‘the translator who brought Sigmund Freud’s work into Dutch.’ When I was twenty I ended up living in his old apartment for a while—as he was dead by that point—and when I woke up in the morning I’d see hundreds of volumes of Freud all around me. I didn’t last very long there. I wanted to become an intellectual too, but every time I tried to read a book I would fall asleep. That’s just the way it is: when I spend too long staring at the work of men who resemble Sigmund Freud, I fall asleep—I can’t help it. Between the ages of eighteen and twenty-two, I tried to take in all kinds of Sigmund Freuds, an exercise which ultimately left me with just one clearly describable feeling: that I wasn’t Sigmund Freud.
