These detainees were called Kapos. The Kapos constitute a particularly contested, and at times tabooified, element of Holocaust remembrance. Some Kapos deployed their situational authority to ease the conditions of other prisoners, while others acted cruelly and committed abuse. This project explores treatment of the Kapo on film. This paper considers two films: Kapò (1959, directed by Pontecorvo, Italy) and Kapo (2000, directed by Setton, Israel). These two films vary in genre: Kapò (1959) is a feature fiction movie, whereas Kapo (2000) is a documentary. Both films nonetheless vivify themes of agency, blame, survival, shame, sacrifice, and recrimination. This paper interrogates how these creative works speak of victims who victimise others and the pain that results; how these works contribute to history, memory, and recollection; and didactically how they explain ‘what happened,’ ‘why,’ and ‘what to do now’. This paper additionally contrasts cinematographic accounts and criminal law’s accounts, in particular, those in Israel’s Kapo trials. In the 1950’s, the Knesset passed legislation — the Nazi and Nazi Collaboration Punishment Act — to criminally charge suspected Jewish Kapos who had immigrated to the state of Israel following the Holocaust. Authorities conducted approximately forty prosecutions. The trials were awkward, the language of judgment gnarly, the absolutes of conviction or acquittal crudely reductionist, and the judges ‘trembled’ at having to sentence. Instead, the Nazis deployed inmates and ghetto residents in “prisoner self-administration”. Some concentration camps involved up to ten per cent of the prison population in this regulatory structure.2 Participants in prisoner self-administration straddled a broad spectrum. The Sonderkommando (“special squads”) precariously occupied the lowest echelons. They cleared the dead from the gas chambers and incinerated the corpses. Sonderkommando mainly worked in this capacity for just a few months before the SS murdered them. The Prominenz (“Prominents”)3 stood above the Sonderkommando, while the Kapos — who supervised forced labourers and the barracks — stood further above still.4 The origin of the term Kapo has been alternately attributed to the Italian word “capo” (meaning “head” or “boss”) or as a contraction of the German term Kameradschaft polizei (“comrade police”). Kapos were organised in pyramidal fashion. More influential Kapos included the Blockälteste (mid-level barracks “elder”) going up to the chief Kapo. While still tenuously positioned, and always occupying liminal spaces;5 more senior Kapos exercised considerable situational authority. Referencing all Kapos, Primo Levi noted that ‘the power of these small satraps was absolute’.6 In the concentration and labour camps, the ranks of the Kapos initially were filled by inmates detained on account of criminal behaviour (marked with green inverted triangles), political prisoners (red triangles), and asocials (black triangles). Over time, Kapos entered from other inmate categories, including Jewish inmates (two yellow triangles).7 In the ghettos, moreover, Jews were routinely enlisted as police (Ordnungsdienst) and other supervisory functionaries: they maintained “order”, enforced Nazi regulations through truncheons and whips, escorted persons selected to be transported to the death camps, and arrested resisters. The Kapos, notably Jewish Kapos, ‘have proven an especially controversial subject’.8 Some Kapos were very cruel. Others did what they could to ease the lives of the prisoners under their watch. Some Kapos were sadistic one day and merciful the next. In the end, most Kapos were killed by the Nazis, although at a lower rate than other prisoner categories. Some were assailed by inmates — or by the Red Army — following the liberation of the camps. Some committed suicide, and some surviving Kapos emigrated outside Europe after the war, including to the newly-established state of Israel. Despite, or perhaps because of, this controversial position, ‘the Kapo is an omnipresent figure in [Holocaust] survivor testimonies’.9 In the 1950s, the Israeli Knesset passed legislation — entitled the

Smith ©2008 Elana Passman ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT ELANA PASSMAN The Cultivation of Friendship: French and German Cultural Cooperation, 1925-1954 (under the direction of Donald M. Reid) Through a series of case studies of French-German friendship societies, this dissertation investigates the ways in which activists in France and Germany battled the dominant strains of nationalism to overcome their traditional antagonism. It asks how the Germans and the French recast their relationship as “hereditary enemies” to enable them to become partners at the heart of today’s Europe. Looking to the transformative power of civic activism, it examines how journalists, intellectuals, students, industrialists, and priests developed associations and lobbying groups to reconfigure the French-German dynamic through cultural exchanges, bilingual or binational journals, conferences, lectures, exhibits, and charitable ventures. As a study of transnational cultural relations, this dissertation focuses on individual mediators along with the networks and institutions they developed; it also explores the history of the idea of cooperation. Attempts at rapprochement in the interwar period proved remarkably resilient in the face of the prevalent nationalist spirit. While failing to override hostilities and sustain peace, the campaign for cooperation adopted a new face in the misguided shape of collaborationism during the Second World War.

Pabst-Retrospektive der Berliner Filmfestspiele Thomas Brandlmeier, epd Film, Nr. 05, 1997 Die letzte große Pabst-Retrospektive hierzulande wurde 1963/64 von Rudolf Joseph im Münchner Filmmuseum gezeigt. Seither gab es immer wieder kleinere Retrospektiven mit dem Kanon der Meisterwerke, "Die Büchse der Pandora", "Die freudlose Gasse", "Tagebuch einer Verlorenen, "Geheimnisse einer Seele", "Kameradschaft", dann und wann auch noch "Die Liebe der Jeanne Ney", "Westfront 1918", "L'Atlantide", "Abwege", "Der Schatz", "Die 3-Groschen-Oper", "Du haut en bas", "Skandal um Eva", "Don Quichotte", "Die weisse Hölle von Piz Palü". Das sind im wesentlichen die Filme, die unter den Oberbegriff "Pabst – späte 20er Jahre – Neue Sachlichkeit" fallen. Dazu ein bißchen Frühwerk und französische Periode. Der Rest – schamhaft verschwiegen. Die Fallhöhe zwischen "Die Büchse der Pandora" (1928/29) – in meinen Augen der ultimative Pabst-Film – und, sagen wir, "Rosen für Bettina" (1955/56) ist in der Tat gewaltig. Gemessen an der Flut von Filmbüchern, Retrospektiven und filmhistorischen Forschungs- und Rekonstruktionsarbeiten zum Werk von Murnau und Lang ist Pabst, anerkanntermaßen die Nummer Drei der deutschen Filmgeschichte, ziemlich vernachlässigt. So gesehen füllt diese Berliner Gesamt-Retrospektive der Stiftung Deutsche Kinemathek eine große Lücke. Rekonstruktionsarbeit Je stärker der Zerstörungsgrad eines Werks ist, desto drastischer sind die Dejà-vu- Effekte der besonderen Art. "Die Büchse der Pandora" (1928/29) und "Die freudlose Gasse" (1925), in Berlin in rekonstruierten Fassungen vorgestellt, kursieren, vor allem infolge von Zensureingriffen, in höchst unterschiedlichen Versionen.     Transculturality in Algiers: The Cinema of Merzak Allouache Joseph McGonagle Thanks to its rich and diverse history, the city of Algiers is undoubtedly a privileged site of transculturality. This was certainly the case in the French colonial period when, as Zeynep Çelik argues, colonial Algeria was the most important but most problematic of the French overseas territories and constituted “the colonial city par excellence, the terrain of many battles— cultural, political, military, urban, architectural.”1 Furthermore, as Martin Evans and John Phillips point out: “French rule in Algeria lasted for 132 years, as opposed to 75 years in Tunisia and 44 in Morocco, a depth and duration of colonial experience unique within the Arab world.”2 As a consequence, France “remains an omnipresent feature of Algeria,” and the complexity of its historical legacy helps ensure that Algeria is “the most francophone of France’s former territories.”3 Crucially, the Bay of Algiers forms a major economic maritime hub. As Tom Trevor has asserted regarding port cities more broadly, such spaces provide “symbolic sites of cultural exchange. They are the points of entry and departure, the mouth of an imagined body of the nation-state, where the foreign gets muddled up with the familiar and land-locked certainty is blurred by maritime exchange.”4 Given that Algiers is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Trevor’s argument pertains all the more, as the profound cultural and linguistic diversity of this geographical space “encourages a reshuffling of the usual cards of national belonging and unilateral framing.”5 As the capital city and seat of state power, Algiers has played a pivotal role in the formation of Algeria as a nation and the development of Algerian cultural identity.

    Judging “Privileged” Jews: Holocaust Ethics, Representation, and the Grey Zone. Adam Brown. New York: Berghahn Books, 2013. Pp. 213. USD$85.00 cloth. Primo Levi wrote his final work, The Drowned and the Saved, in part to counter what he saw as the “Manichaean tendency” to simplify the history of the Holocaust into categories of “good” and “evil,” perpetrators and victims. For Levi, this tendency makes clear to future generations with whom they should side but at the cost of reducing the incredible complexity of human relations into a fable. Instead, Levi’s work portrays a world of moral ambiguity. Concentration camps and ghettos reveal not figures of pure good or evil but men and women who fall along a broad spectrum of morality which Levi terms the “grey zone.” Prisoners of the grey zone included those who occupied positions of “privilege,” or usefulness within the Nazi system. Levi himself was such a prisoner. In Auschwitz his background in chemistry placed him in a job that gave him access to resources which allowed him to survive; resources which were unavailable to scores of others, who all too often did not live to share their experiences. The grey zone complicates our judgments of the Holocaust. Questions of guilt and judgment within a world of reduced freedom and choice lead even Levi into a moral conundrum. While firm in his belief that those ultimately responsible for the horrors of the Holocaust should not be confused with their victims, Levi nevertheless struggles to accept a black-and-white representation of moral accountability. In the end, Levi arrives at the necessity of suspending mortal judgment altogether: “I know of no human tribunal to which one could delegate the judgment” (Levi, 44).

It should rather say “It is unimaginable, therefore, I must imagine, in spite of all.” – Georges Didi­Huberman1 A horror story, the face is a horror story – Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari2 In August 2015, French philosopher and art historian Georges Didi­Huberman wrote an open letter to Hungarian director, László Nemes: Dear László Nemes, Your film, Son of Saul, is a monster. A necessary, coherent, beneficial, innocent monster.3 What are we to make of these opening lines? How does one create a monster? Written in the immediate aftermath of Didi­Huberman’s viewing of the film, the letter is an intimate and emotional tribute to the director’s harrowing representation of extreme human misery set inside the gas chambers at Auschwitz­Birkenau concentration and extermination camp in 1944. Nemes adds his voice to a long and contested history of philosophical debates concerning the relationship between the Holocaust and the status of the cinematic image. How can cinema do justice to representing the Holocaust? What role can images play, without trivialising or sentimentalising an event that is located at the limit of representation? Against this hegemonic line of thought, the discourse emphasising Holocaust unrepresentability has drawn increasing scrutiny, with younger generations of philosophers such as Georges Didi­Huberman questioning the absolutism of the prohibition of representation.

We trust that you will bring these recommendations to the Board of Directors of the Claims Conference for review and action. Through this experience, I have become convinced that the work of the Claims Conference is not adequately understood or appreciated. I hope that this report and the results of this planning process will help dispel the confusion about the past and future achievements of the Claims Conference. No amount of money can compensate for the destruction of innocent human beings and thriving communities or the decimation of the Jewish people as a whole by the Nazis. We can try to use available resources - specifically the proceeds of the sale of communal and unclaimed property in the former East Germany - to respond to the most critical needs related to the consequences of the Shoah. This is what the enclosed Plan tries to accomplish. Budapest and New York: Central European University Press, 2015. “The Holocaust over the years has become an abstraction. For me, it’s more a face, a human face. Let’s not forget this face,” Hungarian director László Nemes said when he received a Golden Globe Award for his debut film, Son of Saul, in 2016. In Son of Saul, the camera never leaves the side of Saul Ausländer, a Hun- garian Jew, and a member of the Sonderkommando in Auschwitz, forced by the Nazis to perform crucial tasks in the extermination process: guiding Jews into the gas chambers, removing the bodies, bringing them to the crematoria, and disposing of their ashes in the nearby river. On Saul’s face, which remains expressionless except for the smallest signs of humanity that his existence as a Sonderkommando allows for, we see reflected the horrors that surround him. Through witnessing the fate, and the face, of one man, the viewer is en- couraged to imagine the vastness of his suffering and that of his fellow Jews; a vastness that is so great that it cannot be represented, except perhaps through close attention to the individual and, ultimately, irreplaceable human face. In How They Lived: The Everyday Lives of Hungarian Jews, 1867–1940, a book of black and white photographs and accompanying text, it is the human face that jumps at the reader from literally every page. In fact, András Koerner’s desire to document the lives of Hungarian Jews stems from the sadness that has remained with him since the Holocaust, and the fact that so much of the world in which he grew up has vanished.
