LISTENING Listening to master musicians is an essential part of the learning process. While there is no substitute for experiencing live music, recordings are the great textbooks for students of jazz. So, I encourage you to listen to recordings between classes, in the car, or when doing chores. In addition, focused listening, without distraction, can help you understand jazz music at a deeper level and will contribute to your overall development. Who to Listen To There are hundreds of great jazz recordings, and it can be difficult for students to know where to start. Today, you can listen to a lot of great music through services such as youtube, Pandora, and Spotify. Many libraries also have wonderful jazz collections. In addition, concerts and television appearances from classic jazz groups are now available on DVD. By their nature, lists of essential jazz recordings are somewhat arbitrary and generally incomplete; the list below is no exception. However, as a reference, I have assembled this list of some of the great jazz rhythm sections and important horn players. They are listed below in rough chronological order. Important Rhythm Sections • Count Basie/Walter Page/Jo Jones/Freddie Green (guitar) – This unit is the model for modern rhythm sections. They swing whether they are playing loud or soft. Some more modern Basie rhythm sections can be heard on Atomic Basie and Frankly Speaking. • Bud Powell/Charlie Mingus/Max Roach – This is the quintessential bebop rhythm section. A great recording featuring Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie is The Quintet: Jazz at Massey Hall. • Modern Jazz Quartet – John Lewis/Percy Heath/Connie Kay/Milt Jackson (vibes) – This quartet performed together for decades.

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART No 95 II WEST 53 STREET. NEW YORK 19. N. Y. For Release TILEPHONI: CltCLI S4900 After Friday, August 5> I960 MODERN JAZZ QUARTET TO GIVE CONCERT AT MUSEUM jazz in the Garden continues at the Museum of Modern Art with The Modern Jazz Quartet, Thursday, August 11, at 8:30 p.m. The ensemble of virtuoso soloists consists of John Lewis, piano, Percy Heath, bass, Milt Jackson, vibraharp, and Connie Kay, drums, This is the ninth in a series of ten Thursday evening promen ade concerts co-sponsored and produced by Metronome magazine. Known as the most highly developed and integrated of the small contemporary groups, The Modem Jazz Quartet was formed in 1951 by four veterans of the Dizzy Gillespie band. Traditional jazz concepts structured on the fugue and classical forms, polished instrumentation, and freedom for individual innovation within the discipline of the group, leads to what John Leewis calls " a collective impro visation which swings." The Quartet has given concerts at Town Hall and Carnegie Hall, at many American universities, at the Newport, French Lick and Monterey festivals. It has joined the Symphony of the Air, the Cleveland Symphony and the Buffalo Philharmonic in concert performances. During the past four years it toured Austria, Belgium, France, Germany and Italy, opening in England at Royal Festival Hall. Not restricted to the concert stage, the Quartet has played night club dates in San Francisco, Chicago, New York and Paris. Much of its repertoire, available on Atlantic Recor-ds, consists of works composed either by John Lewis or Milt Jackson.

Milt Jackson From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Milton "Bags" Jackson (January 1, 1923 – October 9, 1999) was an American jazz vibraphonist, usually Milt Jackson thought of as a bebop player, although he performed in several jazz idioms. He is especially remembered for his cool swinging solos as a member of the Modern Jazz Quartet and his penchant for collaborating with several hard bop and postbop players. A very expressive player, Jackson differentiated himself from other vibraphonists in his attention to variations on harmonics and rhythm. He was particularly fond of the Milt Jackson, Village Jazz Lounge with the Bubba twelvebar blues at slow tempos. • The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) Was an Influential Music Group
The Modern Jazz Quartet (MJQ) was an influential music group established in 1952 and for most of their long career composed of J ohn Lewis (piano, musical director), Milt J ackson (vibraphone), Percy Heath (double bass), and Connie Kay (drums). Initially a side project for personnel from trumpeter D izzy Gillespie's hard-swinging big band, the MJQ gradually became a full-time endeavor and one of the more prominent jazz bands of the posc-\Xf\Xlll era. Under Lewis's leadership they carved their own niche by specializing in an elegant, restrained music (touching on bebop, cool jazz, third stream and classical music) that used sophisticated counterpoint yet nonetheless retained a strong blues 11 11 11 fe el. They introduced several jazz standards, including Django and "Bags' Groove • Initiall y active into the 1970s until Jackson quit due to creative disagreement and frustration with their busy touring schedule, the MJQ reformed intermittently into the 1990s. The enigma of the MJQ's music-making was that each individual member could improvise with an exciting vibrancy but in toto the group specialised in genteel baroque counterpoint. Their approach to jazz attracted promoters who sponsored "jazz packet11 concerts during the 1950s. One show would consist of several contrasting groups. The MJQ were ideal participants because no other group sounded like them. They provided a vis ual contras t as well, formally attired in their customary tuxedos. The group played blues as much as they did fugues, but the result was tantali sing when one considered the hard swinging potential of each individual player.

Frink 2012 iii AN ANALYSIS OF THE COMPOSITIONAL PRACTICES OF ORNETTE COLEMAN AS DEMONSTRATED IN HIS SMALL GROUP RECORDINGS DURING THE 1970S Nathan A. Frink, M.A. University of Pittsburgh, 2012 This study is an ex amination of the musical output of Ornette Coleman’s small ensembles during the 1970s. The primary goal of the paper is to define the specific changes that took place in the early part of the decade that distinguish the artist’s later musical conception from that which he employed during the previous years. In order to create such a di scussion, the study explores several areas of both Ornette’s life and music, and asserts that throughout this decade Ornette’s creative processes frequently exceeded the boundaries that existed in his music of the previous period. The paper is divided into three sections: historical background; Ornette’s “Renaissance”; and an analysis of compositional techniques and i mprovisatory style between 1971 and 1979, the years that comprise his most extreme departure from the practices in his earlier and more commonly accepted recordings.
