Trade Marks Inter Partes Decision O/766/19
O-766-19 TRADE MARKS ACT 1994 IN THE MATTER OF AN APPLICATION BY HALEWOOD INTERNATIONAL BRANDS LIMITED TO REGISTER TRADE MARK 3317855: VERA LYNN IN CLASS 33 AND AN OPPOSITION THERETO UNDER NO. 413912 BY DAME VERA LYNN BACKGROUND AND PLEADINGS 1. On 14 June 2018, Halewood International Brands Limited (the applicant) applied to register the above trade mark in the following class:1 Class 33 Alcoholic beverages (except beer); spirits. 2. The application was published on 29 June 2018, following which Dame Vera Lynn (the opponent) filed a notice of opposition against all of the goods in the application. 3. The opponent bases its case on sections 5(4)(a) and 3(6) of the Trade Marks Act 1994 (the Act). Under 5(4)(a) the opponent relies on the sign VERA LYNN, which it claims to have used in respect of musical recordings, musical performances and charitable services. Use is claimed throughout the UK since at least 1939. 4. In her statement of grounds the opponent submits: “Q2. The Opponent is an extremely well-known singer and performer whose musical recordings and performances have been popular since the Second World War. She is also very well-known for her charity work, including with ex-servicemen, disabled children and breast cancer.” 5. The opponent concludes that: “…well-known personalities are known to endorse products, there will inevitably be confusion that the opponent has endorsed the applicant’s products.” 6. The opponent’s claim under section 3(6) is that the applicant has no permission to use the opponent’s name and is trying to exploit her good name and reputation to sell its goods. -
Krinkelt–Rocherath in Belgium on December 17–18, 1944 During the German Ardennes Offensive
CONTENTS Introduction Chronology Design and Development Technical Specifications The Combatants The Strategic Situation Combat Statistics and Analysis Aftermath Further Reading INTRODUCTION The rocket-propelled grenade launcher (RPG) has become a ubiquitous weapon on the modern battlefield; and all of these weapons trace their lineage back to the American 2.36in rocket launcher, better known as the bazooka. The bazooka was the serendipitous conjunction of two new technologies: the shaped-charge antitank warhead and the shoulder-fired rocket launcher. This book looks at the development of this iconic weapon, and traces its combat use on the World War II battlefield. One of the widespread myths to have emerged about German tank design during World War II was the notion that German sideskirt armor was developed in response to the bazooka, and its British equivalent, the PIAT (Projector Infantry Antitank). American and British troops began encountering the new versions of German armored vehicles with extra armor shields in 1944, and so presumed that this new feature was in response to the Allied shaped-charge weapons. The shields received a variety of names including “bazooka shields,” “bazooka pants,” and “PIAT shields.” In reality, their development was not a response to Allied shaped-charge weapons, for most German innovations in tank technology during the war years were prompted by developments on the Eastern Front. This book examines the real story behind the bazooka shields. It also traces the many specialized devices developed by the Wehrmacht in World War II to deal with the threat of infantry close-attack weapons. A remarkable variety of curious devices was developed including a wood paste to defend against antitank charges, and a machine gun with a special curved barrel to allow armored vehicle crews to defend themselves from within the protective armor of their vehicle. -

This means new “freedom” and a “new normal” for us. It also means that some industries, such as tourism, can finally start working again and many people can return to work. For some of us, it is also the opportunity to get out and travel across provincial borders to places we want to visit. However, this new “freedom” has brought with it renewed responsibilities. Branches can also commence with certain branch activities, provided that they abide by the various regulations. With Level Two the Government has “transferred” the responsibility to us, the citizens of South Africa. More than ever before the onus is on us to abide by the various regulations of which the wearing of a cloth mask, sanitizing, regular washing our hands and maintaining social distance is of paramount importance. -

Time Together While We Are Apart St
Time Together While We are Apart St. Mary’s Whitechapel and Trinity Episcopal Churches Wednesday, June 24, 2020 Good day, dear church communities, Our animals of the week are the grand-dogs of Donna and Pete Ransone! These three dogs live with their daughter Rachael and her husband Gio in Florida. As you may recall from our prayer list notes, Gio is stationed in Afghanistan, and he and his teammates are currently at the Air Force base there, being treated for COVID-19. The hope is that Gio will still be coming home as scheduled in July. Their dear pups are all rescues; Bernard is a terrier/boxer mix; Jackson is a German spitz, and Lady is a corgi/chihuahua mix. Though Lady is clearly the smallest of the dogs, Donna writes that “Lady keeps the others in line as if she was the mother!” Many thanks, Pete and Donna, for sharing your sweet children, and grand-dogs with us! A letter was sent by email on Monday of this week, and is included in this Newsletter for anyone who missed it, detailing our plans to begin an in-person worship service this Sunday, June 28th at 10am in the Pavilion at Trinity. Please note that if you want to attend the service, you will need to make a reservation as our spaces are limited. You can reserve a spot by emailing, calling, or texting Megan. ([email protected] 804-477-5515) Mask are required to attend, and six feet of social distance will be maintained. The letter gives other details and guidelines. -

Vera Lynn 100 Jaar . Dame Vera Margaret Lynn
Vera Lynn 100 jaar . -
Christmas on the Farm Entertainer in World War Two
Vera Lynn memories by Anne Harding, ICSeniors volunteer In Vera’s own words - “It's moving for me to relive those days, and humbling to know that people still think of me - after all, it was simply my duty to keep singing”. Many of us grew up listening to Vera Lynn’s haunting songs, followed by a story or two about a rela- Irish Chaplaincy SENIORS tive or neighbour in the war. She, herself made her stage debut at the age of seven and Irish Chaplaincy in Britain Winter 2014/2015 now, in 2014 Dame Vera Lynn’s ninth decade in the business – a feat that will be difficult to match and one unique in the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War. Vera Lynn is well known to us as the “Forces Sweetheart” and most popular female Christmas on the Farm entertainer in World War Two. She was born in March 1917 in East Ham, London and at the age of seven was singing in working men's clubs and part of a dancing troupe which by Paul Raymond, Project Manager, ICSeniors she enjoyed until the age of fifteen. Vera made her first broadcast in 1935 when she sang with the famous Joe Loss Orchestra among others, but it was during the war that Vera found fame. By 1940, she had her own BBC radio show ‘Sincerely Yours’ when she read out messages from men fighting abroad to their wives, girlfriends, etc. back home. She also released such Bridget Meehan grew up on a farm a few miles outside songs as “We'll Meet Again” and “White Cliffs of Dover” both of which made her a superstar.
