Radio's War Lifeline News New Creative Radio Formats
1940s Radio’s War With the television service closed for the duration, it was radio’s war and the BBC nearly lost it in the opening skirmishes. Listeners wrote in to complain about the new Home Service, which had replaced the National and Regional programme services. There was criticism of too many organ recitals and public announcements. But the BBC had some secret weapons waiting in the wings. Colonel (‘I don’t mind if I do’) Chinstrap and Mrs (‘Can I do yer now, sir?’) Mopp were just of the two famous characters in Tommy Handley’s It’s That Man Again (ITMA) team. The comedian attracted 16 million listeners each week to the programme. This, and other popular comedy shows like Hi, Gang!, boosted morale during the war. Vera Lynn’s programme Sincerely Yours (dismissed by the BBC Board of Governors with the words: "Popularity noted, but deplored.") won her the title of "Forces’ Sweetheart”. In 1940 the Forces programme was launched for the troops assembling in France. The lighter touch of this new programme was a great success with both the Forces and audiences at home. After the war it was replaced by the Light Programme which was modelled on the Forces Programme. Distinguished correspondents, including Richard Dimbleby, Frank Gillard, Godfrey Talbot and Wynford Vaughan- Thomas, helped to attract millions of listeners every night with War Report, which was heard at the end of the main evening news. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be, we shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets…we shall never surrender. -

His completing the marathon lengths of the garden that raised an astonishing amount of money for charity. His being awarded the rank of Honorary Colonel. His enjoying a flypast of WW2 aircraft on his 100th birthday. And of course his being knighted by a beaming Queen in the Quadrangle of Windsor Castle. But I like to think that one of his lasting legacies will be his unfailing optimism. “Tomorrow will be a good day” was a mantra that stood him in good stead all through his long life, not just its final extraordinary year. And it was one that was surely forged in the grim days of war in the Far East, where over and over again a better prospect the next day was all the Forgotten Army had to cling to. The Burma Star amongst the medals clinking on Captain Sir Tom’s regimental blazer was a striking enough image in itself. The grim days we are still enduring bear no resemblance to those, yet we can still find encouragement in his spirit of optimism. “Tomorrow will be a good day” is much more than a weather forecast in this wintry spell, even though it reminds me of Vera Lynn’s old song: It’s a lovely day tomorrow, tomorrow is a lovely day; Come and feast your tear-dimmed eyes on tomorrow’s clear blue skies. -

AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND HISTORY ON SCREEN: The Life and Times of Lord Mountbatten 1 Abstract: The television series, The Life and Times of Lord Mountbatten (1968), was a unique collaboration between an independent production company, Associated- Rediffusion, a national museum, the Imperial War Museum, and one of the most famous aristocratic and military figures of the 20th century, Lord Mountbatten. Furthermore, Mountbatten was the programme’s presenter, appearing on screen to describe his experiences autobiographically. Through the use of film and images, Mountbatten’s ‘life’ was intertwined with the historical ‘times’ of over half a century. Though praised at the point of its release to British audiences in 1969 by the public, critics and historians alike, The Life and Times of Lord Mountbatten has since largely been ignored by scholars interested in the history-on-television genre. By detailing the origins, format, production and reception of the series, and by comparing it to both The Great War (1964) and The World at War (1973-1974), which were also produced in conjunction with the Imperial War Museum, the immediate success and subsequent failure of The Life and Times of Lord Mountbatten to attract popular and academic attention provides an argument for widening the discussion on television history and its limited categorizations. Key words: autobiography, history, television, Imperial War Museum, The Great War, The World at War. 2 To tell the story of this century on television is in itself a formidable task. To focus this story on one single man, however remarkable his career, breaks new ground. This series is not only about Lord Mountbatten, it is with him and that gives this television history a unique dimension.1 Academic literature concerning factual history programmes is abundant with references to The Great War and The World at War, which were television series made in collaboration with the Imperial War Museum (IWM) from 1963-1964 and 1971-1974 respectively. -

Labor Relations, 16Mm Film and Euston Films
Scope: An Online Journal of Film and Television Studies Issue 26 February 2014 Labor Relations, 16mm Film and Euston Films Max Sexton, Birkbeck College, University of London Film as a technology has been used, adapted and implemented in particular ways within television. This article provides examples of this process along with its complexities and demonstrates how a system of regulated labor on British television during the 1970s shaped the aesthetic form that 16mm film was used to develop. The questions of how far the production process was guided by institutionalized conventions, however, is one that the article seeks to answer in its analysis of the function and form of the filmed television series produced by Euston Films, a subsidiary of Thames Television. Charles Barr (1996) has discussed the legacy of live television that seeks to develop analyses of the developing formal systems of early television. For example, the telerecordings of most of the Quatermass serials were only “television films” because they were recorded on film, but were not constructed or edited as film, although they may have used some film inserts. According to Barr, television drama may have been shot on film, but it was different from film. It was only later in the 1960s and 1970s that shooting on film meant that the studio drama was replaced by shooting on location on 16mm. Barr notes that in Britain, unlike in the US, if a growing proportion of drama was shot on film, dramas were still referred to as “plays.” Consequently, the TV plays-on-film were distinct from “films.” However, as this article demonstrates, the development of the 16mm film from the 1970s complicates some of the notions that television drama was either live or continued to be planned, shot and edited as a live play. -

He was 83 and was laid to rest at Torquay Crematorium. Denzl was with the Tigers at the time of their transition from Spitfires to Meteors and we published a few of his stories about experiences with the new jet fighter in previous editions of Tiger News. Those of you who were at Duxford last September at the RAF ACE event will have had the privilege of meeting Denzl who was there with his son Robert. We also say goodbye to Jack Thornton who died in February aged 91. Jack was a Tiger between July 1941 (when they were at Acklington) and April 1946 and was a Fitter IIE (Repair and Inspection.) This was Jack’s only posting and when he was demobbed in 1946 he had attained the rank of Corporal. And to Sqn Ldr Peter Pressley AFC who was with 74 from September 1951 to October 1953 at RAF Horsham St Faith, serving as Flying Officer and then Flight Lieutenant on the squadron. Our collective thoughts are with the families of Denzl, Jack and Peter. Churchill’s Cortege. You may recall from previous Tiger News` that Canadian Associate Member Colin Musson has been trying to trace the names of The Few chosen to accompany Churchill’s coffin at his funeral. -

Time Together While We are Apart St. Mary’s Whitechapel and Trinity Episcopal Churches Wednesday, June 24, 2020 Good day, dear church communities, Our animals of the week are the grand-dogs of Donna and Pete Ransone! These three dogs live with their daughter Rachael and her husband Gio in Florida. As you may recall from our prayer list notes, Gio is stationed in Afghanistan, and he and his teammates are currently at the Air Force base there, being treated for COVID-19. The hope is that Gio will still be coming home as scheduled in July. Their dear pups are all rescues; Bernard is a terrier/boxer mix; Jackson is a German spitz, and Lady is a corgi/chihuahua mix. Though Lady is clearly the smallest of the dogs, Donna writes that “Lady keeps the others in line as if she was the mother!” Many thanks, Pete and Donna, for sharing your sweet children, and grand-dogs with us! A letter was sent by email on Monday of this week, and is included in this Newsletter for anyone who missed it, detailing our plans to begin an in-person worship service this Sunday, June 28th at 10am in the Pavilion at Trinity. In 1952, "Auf Wiederseh'n Sweetheart" topped the US charts for nine weeks, becoming the first record by a British performer to do so. Lynn also appeared as a regular on “The Big Show”, Tallulah Bankhead's US radio program. Her 1950s popularity topped in 1954 with a number-one hit "My Son, My Son". In 1960 Lynn left Decca Records after working with them for some 25 years and joined EMI, recording the song "The Day After Tomorrow" for the 1962 musical “Blitz!”. Characters in the play were depicted as listening to the song while in a London bomb shelter. The 1964 film Dr. Strangelove ends with clips of Atomic and Nuclear explosions accompanying Vera Lynn's song “We'll Meet Again”. 1966 saw the album “Hits of the Blitz”.
