Fresh Insights into His Wounds. 353 v Preface The Arthur Custance Centre for Science and Christianity (www.custance.org) was founded in 2002 to promote the works of A.C. Custance (1910-1985) and his insights into the relationship between the established facts of science, and the truths revealed in Scripture. Seventeen years later, the Custance Centre held its first international conference on Faith and Science focused, not on the well-known evolution/creation debate, but on the science and theology of the Holy Shroud, the burial cloth that wrapped Jesus as he lay dead in the tomb. This cloth, also known as the Turin Shroud or the Shroud of Turin, is the most studied object in human history, but its full potential to integrate faith and science has never been explored until this conference. Interestingly, the Shroud tends to be marginalised by the academic community, with academics believing that it may have been created in the Middle Ages as an icon to focus religious devotions, or as a forgery to dupe pilgrims into paying homage. Yet it is far more significant than most people can ever imagine. As the chapters in this book exemplify, the Shroud does have its skeptics, but it continues to mystify us as it bridges the gap between the natural and the supernatural. The one single fact about the Shroud, which catapults it from an object of passing interest to the fantastically unique key that enables science to unlock the door into another world, is the image it bears. No amount of wishful thinking, reality denial, misrepresentation of facts, nor religious discrimination can erase the significance of this image. It is the image, not the cloth, which is the key. One day this ancient linen cloth may be destroyed, or fall prey to the natural processes of decomposition, but its image will live on in countless forms from the millions of printed photographs to the enormous reservoir of digital files. As several chapters in this book report, copies of the image imprinted on the Shroud can be examined to reveal a number of unexplainable facts. If one has the courage to put aside their bias and look, these facts give us a glimpse into eternity. Some scientific evidence may challenge the authenticity of the cloth itself, but to date, nothing challenges the authenticity of the image. It is truly a remarkable thing to behold, and a joy to study, even for the skeptic! These techniques could even prove whether a radiating event occurred to the multiply-wounded, crucified corpse in this cloth, which not only encoded all of these features, but left unforgeable evidence of when, where, and to whom all of these events occurred. She was drawn to the Shroud and contacted Joseph Marino, who at the time was a Benedictine monk in St. Louis. Marino left the monastery and eventually married Benford. They partnered on Shroud research, and authored several papers on the theory that the Shroud sample used for radiocarbon dating in the 1988 was flawed because new material was added to reenforce and/or repair the Shroud during its history.

A Brief History of Coptic Personal Status Law Ryan Rowberry John Khalil* INTRODUCTION With the U.S.-led "War on Terror" and the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, American legal scholars have understandably focused increased attention on the various schools and applications of Islamic law in Middle Eastern countries. 1 This focus on Shari'a law, however, has tended to elide the complexity of traditional legal pluralism in many Islamic nations. Numerous Christian communities across the Middle East (e.g., Syrian, Armenian, Coptic, Nestorian, Maronite), for example, adhere to personal status laws that are not based on Islamic legal principles. Christian minority groups form the largest non-Muslim . Ryan Rowberry and Jolin Khalil graduated from Harvard Law School in 2008. Religion has always existed in the history of human civilization which, on the basis of the latest archaeological discoveries, appears to have been fostered by it. There have been many Religions, and some of them and new ones still thrive today, and often they had and still have the presumption of being right a priori, with consequences for humanity not always painless. But, at a careful investigation it remains difficult to answer at the basic question of which one or which ones of them are true, or have been devised on purpose, consciously or unconsciously, by a group of individuals, or some great personage, as it is the case especially for the revealed Religions. All of them possess complex mythologies and/or stories with more or less credible witnesses, but within Christianity there is a unique relic that may answer the previous question. In fact, in the light of what is known to date, the Shroud of Turin is very likely the burial cloth of Jesus Christ as told in the canonical Gospels. Careful studies by using the scientific method have proved beyond any reasonable doubt that it is not a fake, and also that the most credited hypothesis for its image formation call into question a process of radiant energy compatible with the Resurrection. The traces of this phenomenon are still being observed on the Shroud, which was and still is a mute eye-witness of the most important event in human history.

    I4o THEOLOGICAL TRENDS THE SHROUD OF TURIN Its implications for faith and theology ACK IN I967, a notable Anglican exegete, C; F. D. Moule, registered a B complaint about some of his contemporaries: 'I have met otherwise intelligent men who ask, apparently in all seriousness, whether there may not be truth in what I would call patently ridiculous legends about.., an early portrait of Jesus or the shroud in which he is supposed to have been buried'. 1 Through the 195os into the 196os many roman Catholics, if they had come across it, would have agreed with Moule's verdict. That work of fourteen volumes on theology and church history, which Karl Rahner and other German scholars prepared, Lexikon fiir Theologie un d Kirehe (i957-68), simply ignored the shroud of Turin, except for a brief reference in an article on Ulysse Chevalier (1841-1923). Among his other achievements, the latter had gathered 'weighty arguments' to disprove the authenticity of the shroud. Like his english jesuit contemporary, Herbert Thurston, Chevalier maintained that it was a fourteenth-century forgery. The classic Protestant theological dictionary, Die Religion in Gesehichte und Gegenwart, however, took a different view. The sixth volume of the revised, third edition, which appeared in 1962 , included an article on the shroud by H.-M. Decker-Hauff. ~ The author summarized some of the major reasons in favour of its authenticity. In its material and pattern, the shroud matches products from the Middle East in the first century of the christian era. In the mid-fourteenth century the prevailing conventions of church art would not have allowed a forger or anyone else to portray Jesus in the full nakedness that we see on the shroud.

What is the Shroud The Shroud of Turin [1-7], the Holy Shroud or simply the Shroud (Figure 1) is the archaeological object, as well as religious, find proofs of authenticity even by using facts that are not strictly non-believers [6], on the other hand, seem sometimes blind to more studied in the world. It is in fact the only Relic that boasts scientific and sometimes connected to phenomena of pareidolia; but also hundreds of books in dozens of different languages; you scientific evidence that is not in accordance with their beliefs. not only dozens of publications in specialized scientific journals, cannot count the articles and notes that come out almost daily in the problem, avoiding the possible interference of other kinds, Here we will try to consider only the scientific aspects of the newspapers and on the web. especially religious, even to try to dampen the controversy that has emerged in recent times on this subject. Since many topics are very complex, we reserve the right to investigate any points of interest in possible subsequent interventions. The Authenticity of the Shroud Very frequently, there is also a heated discussion about the authenticity of the Shroud, without however clarifying what is the subject of the discussion, or what is meant by authenticity.
