Theirs were, with some exceptions, supporting rather than leading roles. In the feudal period, they were knights, not earls. Afterwards, with occasional exceptions such as Major General Patrick Purcell, who died fighting Cromwell,3 they tended to be colonels and captains rather than generals. They served as sheriffs and seneschals rather than Irish viceroys or lords deputy. -

The convention met at Carson City on July 4, 1864, and adjourned on July 28 of the same year. On the 1st Wednesday of September 1864, the constitution was approved by the vote of the people of the Territory of Nevada, and on October 31, 1864, President Lincoln proclaimed that the State of Nevada was admitted into the Union on an equal footing with the original states. The literal text of the original, signed copy of the constitution filed in the office of the secretary of state has been retained, unless it has been repealed or superseded by amendment. BBC Guide to Parliament (Updated to 2021) There has been a parliament at Westminster since the 13th Century. Today it remains the centre of British government, boasting a colourful history and frequently adding new chapters. Parliament is the place where politicians meet to decide laws and make decisions on running the UK, although some issues in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are now dealt with by their respective parliaments and assemblies. Decisions on setting taxes to fund the government's policies are also FACT: MPs and made in Parliament.
